Blog Entry A Love Story... Apr 9, '08 8:22 AM
for everyone A Love Story..... Can you believe it! Not that long ago my life was a mess. I've suffered with mild depression all of my life. In October of 05,the girl I thought I was in love with, broke my heart. I was devastated. Once again, something bad had happened to me within just a couple of days from my birthday. This seemed to be a trend. My little brother died a week after my 7th birthday. My dad had a stroke on my 27th birthday. My first wife told me she wanted to have an affair on my 33rd birthday. I've had a two other girlfriends that broke up with me on other birthdays. I continued to go to Mass each week, but I felt lost. I prayed for God to help me through this, but always felt like God had turned his back on me. I was utterly and completely lost! I stopped singing in the choir because it felt like a lie to sing God's praises knowing He could care less about me. I stopped taking communion, because I could see the smirk on the face of Jesus as I looked to the altar. I never gave up though, even though I swear to this day that for just a while,God gave up on me. It was the Christmas Eve Midnight Mass (before Mass begins the choir sings for 30 minutes),and as the choir was singing "O Holy Night", I felt it. Whatever had been blocking me from God was gone and I was once again filled with His Holy Spirit. I left Mass that night feeling like everything would be alright. Fast forward to March 6th 2006. I just bought a computer, never having one before. Maybe there is something to be said for my best friend's advice. He's seen the heartaches I've endured by meeting women at bars, and suggested on-line dating. Hmm...OK I'll give it a shot. I put myself out in the "big cyber world" on a couple of dating sites. plentyofish, was one of them. Just like on 360 now,I was myself. I was honest. Just as soon as my profile went through, the computer sent me some matches. One woman, with the most beautiful blue eyes I've ever seen, had a profile that could have been written by me. We sounded so much alike it was a little scary. I'll keep her to my favorites and just watch her, since I'm too shy to email her. Two days later (4th day ever on-line) Oh My God! That girl with the blue eyes has sent me an email! We emailed back and forth, and by the 3rd day we were spending hours on the phone. We met within 2 weeks of first contacting each other. It was love at first sight for both of us. Fast forward 13 months I still can't believe it! I'm in Vegas with the woman that's about to become my wife. Life is GREAT! Fast forward 1 year It's here! Diane and I have been married for a year on the 11th. I've never known such joy and peace. The depression that I've lived with for so long is all but forgotten. All I needed was that "missing piece" of my heart to complete me. Diane is that piece. Thank you Diane for contacting me, for calling me, for marrying me, and for loving me. You have my love now. You have my love always!

This week I had the first case in history of raisin toxicity ever seen at MedVet. My patient was a 56-pound, 5 yr old male neutered lab mix that ate half a canister of raisins sometime between 7:30 AM and 4:30 PM on Tuesday.  He started with vomiting, diarrhea and shaking about 1AM on Wednesday but the owner didn't call my emergency service until 7AM.

I had heard somewhere about raisins AND grapes causing acute Renal failure but hadn't seen any formal paper on the
subject. We had her bring the dog in immediately. In the meantime, I called the ER service at MedVet, and the doctor there was like me - had heard something about it, but....    Anyway, we contacted the ASPCA National Animal Poison Control Center and they said to give I V fluids at
1 1/2 times maintenance and watch the kidney values for the next 48-72 hours.

The dog's BUN (blood urea nitrogen level) was already at 32 (normal less than 27) and creatinine! Over 5 ( 1.9 is the high end of normal). Both are monitors of kidney function in the bloodstream. We placed an IV catheter and started the fluids. Rechecked the renal values at 5 PM and the BUN was over 40 and creatinine over 7 with no urine production after a liter of fluids.  At the point I felt the dog was in acute renal failure and sent him on to MedVet for a urinary catheter to monitor urine output overnight as well as overnight care.

He started vomiting again overnight at MedVet and his renal values have continued to increase daily. He produced urine when given lasix as a diuretic. He was on 3 different anti-vomiting medications and they still couldn't control his vomiting. Today his urine output decreased again, his BUN was over 120, his creatinine was at 10, his phosphorus was very elevated and his blood pressure, which had been staying around 150, skyrocketed to 220.. He continued to vomit and the owners elected to

Euthanize.

This is a very sad case - great dog, great owners who had no idea raisins could be a toxin. Please alert everyone you know who has a dog of this very serious risk.
Poison control said as few as 7 raisins or grapes could be toxic. Many people I know give their dogs grapes or raisins as treats including our ex-handler's. Any exposure should give rise to immediate concern.

Onions, chocolate, cocoa and macadamia nuts can be fatal, too.

Even if you don't have a dog, you might have friends who do. This is worth passing on to them.

Even after this hit the news today, I had an agent call me and ask if I would still like to have Allstate as my automobile insurance, when I asked her about the news today, she says "actually That is a lie" I politely hung up on her.   Is that Gall or what?                                  Allstate suspended from writing new auto policies in Florida

TALLAHASSEE, Florida — Florida Insurance Commissioner Kevin McCarty has suspended Allstate companies from writing new car insurance policies in Florida for refusing to comply fully with a state subpoena.

McCarty abruptly ended a scheduled two-day meeting yesterday after just two hours.

He was angered that Allstate officials failed to turn over some information the state requested on property coverage rates and that company officials described the state's request as “irrelevant.”

The decision affects all five Allstate subsidiaries in Florida.

McCarty said the order, which he will issue this afternoon, will only affect Allstate's ability to sell new automotive insurance policies, and has no impact on renewals or new home insurance policies.

Governor Charlie Crist issued this statement on the suspension:

“I applaud Commissioner McCarty for sending a clear message to Allstate Companies and protecting Florida's consumers. It is clear to me that Allstate must have something to hide if they are unwilling to comply with the Commissioner's requests. This type of behavior is an unconscionable disregard for this process and their customers.                           I came so close to changing to this company for my Auto insurance this month......So glad that I didnt   Z

I am still reeling from the accident on I-4 yesterday, it was so horrendous, I am a native Floridian, I have watched this state conduct "controlled Burns" (no such thing exists) I have watched people die on these interstates time after time  because the Forestry dept. decides its up to them to burn something. They even carried one out yesterday while the emergency crews were trying to cut people out of the mangle. That is un called for. I think every person who lit a fire yesterday should be arrested just for no respect for the people who were injured and killed in that horrific incident. I can not believe they can even try to justify this.  Z     Today I hear they are trying to say smoke played no part in that accident. Good God. are you kidding me. We are not that stupid!!!!!!!!!!!!

"Clearly this is a historic day for Florida, and for the Seminole nation," he said on Wednesday after making the announcement.

The governor just struck a deal with the Seminole Indians.  We get sine if their money, and they can add blackjack, baccarat, and Las Vegas-style slots to all their casinos.

"I think you're going to see more and more people here," said one gambler.

The Seminole Hard Rock Casino in Tampa is already planning a big expansion.  First, card games and big jackpots will be added, and that could lead to glitzy shows, and no telling what else.

"If people don't like gambling, they shouldn't go," said Governor Crist.

We would say what happens in Tampa stays in Tampa, but the governor's deal with the Indian tribe just started a war at the Capitol.

"I think it will open the door to more criminal behavior, said Attorney General Bill McCollum.  "It always does."

Conservative state lawmakers say Governor Crist didn’t even have the power to do this.

"It is inappropriate for the governor to unilaterally expand gambling," said State Senator Ronda Storms.   I AM SO TIRED OF PEOPLE trying to act like they are keeping Floridas best "interests" at heart. I am not a gambler, but I see that this is going to be very good for Florida. The money that the state will make will double that which all the tourists bring to this state. It doesnt bother anyone that for nearly 75 years out of state tourists have been flocking down here by the thousands and destroying our beautiful state with their lack of respect for any of us or anything that lives here, or that they have taken over the entire population of this state where my ancestors were born and built everything that was good here is now either gone endangered or invisible because of land developers to make room for the thousands of people from other states. The seminole indians have lived here for over 100 years they are the "State of Florida" get it, love it ,or get the Hell out of our State. Governor Crist has every legal right to do this, and by the way, he is a native Floridian also, very few of us left. He is also speaker for The State of Florida, we elected him.

Defenders of Wildlife

A Special Message

Watch a special 2007 year-end message from Rodger

Watch the Video

Watch a special year-end video message to you from Defenders of Wildlife President Rodger Schlickeisen.

Dear Zona, As the year draws to a close, I want to thank you for all of your help in 2007. With your support, we’ve done some remarkable things to help save wolves, polar bears and other cherished wildlife! Watch our new video and see some of the animals you’ve helped this year.

You are a part of an important community of wildlife activists, Zona. In 2007, hundreds of thousands of online supporters like you took action, attended meetings, volunteered time and made contributions to support our wildlife-saving work. These efforts have made a world of difference for wolves in Alaska, the Southwest and the Yellowstone area. They’ve helped save California condors, Florida manatees and many other imperiled animals in America and around the world. And just this week, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service re-introduced black footed ferrets on a Western Kansas farm after nearly 16,000 Defenders supporters urged the agency to return this endangered mammal to its native Kansas home.    See some of the other concrete ways that your help has made a difference. Please check out this short video. Thank you for all you do. Wishing you and yours a happy holiday and a wonderful New Year, Rodger Signature

This is my single greatest achievment for 2007    I am very very proud to have been a part of it. Find out how wonderful it feels please get involved... Love you  Z   Please watch this video.....................                        Dear zona,

This morning, disgraced NFL star Michael Vick was sentenced to
prison for his role in dogfighting. Vick's sentencing caps a
period of stunning changes for animals across a wide range of
industries and abuses. Take a minute to celebrate these changes

achieved together! "Click here:

Thanks to your actions and support, The Humane Society of the United
States saved
thousands of animals from the cruelty of animal fighting, built
even more worldwide support for our campaign to end Canada's
seal hunt, and rescued pets threatened by California's
wildfires. Together, we accomplished all this and more. Click

Here are just a few of the extraordinary achievements you and I
can savor as 2007 draws to a close:

:: The last two states -- New Mexico and Louisiana -- outlawed
cockfighting, and Congress passed a seminal law strengthening
penalties for animal fighting. HSUS supporters like you also
pressured Nike to drop a multi-million-dollar endorsement deal
with Vick after his role in illegal dogfighting was uncovered.

:: Horse slaughter was finally eliminated on U.S. soil when
Texas and Illinois shut down the last remaining slaughterhouses
in the nation.

:: We rescued animals from natural disasters, providing care for
hundreds of pets and farm animals threatened by California's
recent wildfires.

:: Some of the worst cruelties of factory farming were stopped
when the largest veal and pig producers committed to abandon the
use of tiny crates and cages, more companies and consumers
switched to cage-free eggs, and Oregon's legislature made
history by passing legislation outlawing the use of gestation
crates to confine breeding pigs.

Many more challenges lie ahead in 2008, and we desperately need
your continued commitment to confront animal cruelty in all its
forms. After you've watched the video, please consider making a
generous year-end, tax-deductible gift to The Humane Society of
the United States. Click here:

Your actions and support have truly made a difference in
animals' lives. Thank you for standing with us.

Sincerely,
