Catholic churches in the Netherlands should use the name Allah for God to ease tensions between Muslims and Christians, says a Dutch bishop.

Tiny Muskens, the bishop of Breda, told the Dutch TV program "Network" Monday night he believes God doesn't mind what he is called, Radio Netherlands Worldwide reported.

The Almighty is above such "discussion and bickering," he insisted.

Muskens points to Indonesia, where he served 30 years ago, as an example for Dutch churches. Christians in the Middle East also use the term Allah for God.

"Someone like me has prayed to Allah yang maha kuasa (Almighty God) for eight years in Indonesia and other priests for 20 or 30 years," Muskens said. "In the heart of the Eucharist, God is called Allah over there, so why can't we start doing that together?"

Muskens thinks it could take another 100 years, but eventually the name Allah will be used by Dutch churches, promoting rapprochement between the two religions, he said, according to Radio Netherlands.

However, a survey published today in the Netherlands' largest newspaper, De Telegraaf, showed 92 percent of the more than 4,000 people polled oppose the bishop's view, the Associated Press reported.

mabye the muslims should back off a little....i for one am tired of seeing everyone cave in to all of their demands.....and i for one do not care if they get offended or not....i heard another story about muslims in the UK.....one business made everyone eat their lunches at their desks or in their cars during "rammaden" because the muslims might find it offensive.....its God for me and it always will be.....he may be the same....but i don't think i'll be calling him Allah....i'd be "offended".....

The Catholic Church has been getting very much in the mix of things lately and yet most of their followers do not agree with what the leaders are saying. I think it is dangerous for the Bishop to call for this.

The opinions on Catholicism, aside. I'll be glad to change my usage to "Allah" the day the Muslims all say "God Akbar".

I totally understand the Bishop's statement and, technically, he's correct. God, in Arabic, is Allah. But words mean something and the word "God" means something very special - THE most special - for many of us and the word "Allah" does not. Son of God, Lamb of God, King of Kings, etc,...are all names used interchangeably in this part of the world. Allah doesn't appear on our list of names and I'll long-since be dead and gone before it does.

Just more PC garbage.....

Talk about capitulation to political correctness. This is why I no longer go to church. It hurts, but I cannot support an organization that is using it's pulpits and resources to support illegal immigration, social activism and what it loosely terms as "social justice." I don't think I am alone. I wish we had a Church more concerned with God than with polls.

The Netherlands can do what they want. In a hundred years, based on current demographic data, they may just BE a Muslim nation.

Count me out on calling God anything other than what I was taught in Catechism. The Pope should let the request die a proper bureaucratic death.

Riots will ensue if certain people dont get what they want by any means necessary

The Allah of Islam is not the God of the Bible. Totally different beings. Do any of you remember the speech John Paul gave before he died ? He said that he was very saddened, and believed the Catholic Church would aid the European Union. His words were not exactly that, but he realized the Catholic Church was in apostasy.

Over my dead GOD fearing body. I gave up Catholic ways for a reason and this is a great example of why.

Their beliefs, moral and values are not the same as we consider when we speak of our God. Why can they not belief what they will and leave other religions like ours out of it. Pray to your God and I will pray to mine. But please dont tell me what I need to call my God.

This is an example of the 'creeping Islamization' of Europe and the world. Giving in on even little things(I don't call this 'little') means more giving in will come later. And soon you will be given over. Someone is estimating that Spain and France will be under Sharia Law by 2050. Anybody disagree?

You make a good point BD. Just like saying it didn't matter if the new Congressmen swore in on the Koran. Little things like that do matter.(and I did NOT consider that a little matter)

It has been stated in several public forums that the goal of the Islamist isn't sharia law tomorrow, it's sharia law in the next century. I do think they are going to have some problems with some nations that are coming into economic power-China and India. I don't see them as capitulating because they have been on the front lines of this fight since the 1200's. And the bad blood of the border war between India and Pakistan is one that still flares into bloody battles. But France, Spain and Germany-sure they will fall. Italy, probably not because they have this inner pride of their Roman heritage and don't like infringement. UK is going to have a heck of a time keeping clear. We had better forge strong ties with East Asian nations now, because we may not be able to count on traditional allies in the next century.

Does it matter if Congressmen swear on Mein Kampf? Because that's what the Koran is.

Isn't that odd, since God's name is NOT allah. Willie, would you care if someone called you Richard? Names have meaning and God has made it clear, what His name is. In Enlgish, it translated from the Greek to Jesus...Lord God, Heavenly Father... is NOT allah.
Catholics need to throw this guy out and find someone with a brain.

It is very disquieting for the Catholic Church to come out and bow down to these Islamists, that for sure. The members of the Church need to speak up loud and clear on this issue.

There's NO excuse for any one in the church to do that. What a disgrace, but then, Catholic church seems to have a bigger problem with Jews, than muslims

Since the Bible CLEARLY STATES, we are to call Him Father............................... EVERYONE IN THE WORLD, in my opinion, has totally missed it!!!!!!!!!

Missed the meaning, missed the power, and missed the glory.

"Buh-Bye" says the Father. "I NEVER KNEW YOU."
