OK, I already know we pay less for gasoline in this country than many other places, but let's face it, that fact doesn't make it less painful, especially here in California. I've already started
taking action to reduce the amount of gasoline I consume. First of all, I walk a lot more places than I used to. This not only saves money, but it's good exercise. Secondly, I find I just don't go some places that I used to because I don't want to waste the gas. Finally, I have decided to get rid of my current car in a little over a month from now in favor of a hybrid. I won't identify the make and model of the car I drive now but suffice it to say its gas guzzling borders on obscene! It's extremely wasteful and I find I can no longer, in good conscience, justify keeping it. Besides, I'm a very frugal person and I don't like throwing away money, even if the car is incredibly fun to drive, (which it is). The point is, I know I can't be the only one trying to reduce the pain at the pump--a pain that is likely to get worse before it gets better.
And even if gasoline prices do come down in the future, having a hybrid means I'll save that much more money and know I'm doing something good for the environment.
Again, I can't be the only one taking cost-cutting measures to relieve the pain. I'd be interested to know what some of you out there are doing to deal with the gasoline gouging.

Hi Tony , It is a real bummer to get rid of what you love just to save money , but don't they do this every Memorial day / Labor days ?Just cause they know we travel? It should be regulated. We just got back from our daughters graduation in Yuba city/Marysville and the gas there was only 3.19 a gal and where we live we pay 3.59 a gal we are being totally gouged up north !! I think Yuba city has the cheapest in the state. Oh well, I wish we could someday get a hybrid too.

Hi Tony,

I think you're doing the right thing in terms of switching to a hybrid. My dad purchased one last year and that he has been doing is raving about its benefits in savings. Perhaps this escalation in gas prices will provide an incentive for many of us to eventually switch over to hybrids or revert back to more economical means of transpotation. This may, in turn, slightly reduce the amount of traffic conjestion on the freeways.

At the same time, it's not only the rise in gasoline prices but the fact that alternative sources of fuel (such as ethanol) have not been pushed dramatically enough to the forefront. What are your thoughts Tony?

since i'm single, and i don't need a large vehicle, i ride a motorcycle. i also car pool alot with my cousin and friends so we can all go together to places in the same car rather then meet up in one area using different cars. i also use public transportation on rainy or foggy days. it's safer for me, and i'm lucky to have my work, the grocery store and the bank all on the same street that i live off of.

Well I guest Tony different stroks for different people. I have also just purchased an 07 car which will give me better gas mileade per gallon. No need also to mention the name. But it was the car I wanted. The current gas price probably makes most of us think twice before the drive. I have been blessed to go where ever I want to go but that may not be the case for some.Hey its a new time and this is what we must learn to deal with unless the American public takes action. We are in the greatest country there is and the land of oportunity.Even with these prices it will not stop us.

If I can get somewhere by walking then I walk there. Otherwise I travel at times during the day when there is less stop-and-go traffic or, like you said, there are places where I just don't go anymore.

great blog! good info. Why is it that we can't have a better transportation system? New York does, right? Why can't we? good trains and buses at a decent cost and many of them -with lots of stops??? If we did- I wouldn't own a car. I would rather use buses or trains. Kids love that stuff.

All I can Say Mr. Tony M, is we need to go back to animal transportation. By the way "Cameled" I gave you the camel in the one worder list. Let us try Camels for short distance journeys and protect our heads with emperor crowns... LOL.......Doesn't hurt to try, err, maybe for some of us it does???

I started telecommuting 3 days a week and work to combine trips that require a car to minimize outings. On top of that replaced my light bulbs with fluorescent, recycle, and do everything in my power to reduce my carbon footprint.

In terms of hybrids think they are great for city driving but not so good for highway. I THINK that you do not get a huge mileage benefit on the highway and my understanding is the batteries are only good for 5 years. Batteries are VERY bad for the environment so would go for a more efficient car if you log lots of highway miles. Do your own research on this and do what you feel is right, just do the research.

Best solution is, telecommute, use your bike when you can, take public transportation (I don’t do this), and use a car as your last resort.

I wish the media would start focusing on the obscene fuel prices and lack of refining facilities which puts our nation at risk. Unless we the citizens (unfortunately we are guided only by media) react things will only get worse. I recommend people write their congressman and let them know about your dissatisfaction. In addition do your best to minimize use, shoot for a 10% reduction at first and keep on going….

Happy conserving.

The Democrats in the debate, just couldn't bring themselves to admit there was nothing they could do about high gasoline prices. Just couldn't do it!

Keep it Tite! Keep it Rite! Keep it Safe!

Hello Tony

My name is Angel Rivera

We are all aware of the growing Road Debris issues that we face on our everyday commute to work. Whether is be Tires, Lumber, Ladders, Appliances

We have to be more aware & more cautious while driving on our busy highways.

Everywhere throughout the nation we have a lot of new construction going on & with it puts more construction trucks on our roads with the risk of material loads that are not properly secured.

As with all contractors including myself we want to make sure that we secure our loads properly. Unfortunately we still have situations that we cannot foresee like rope breaking, bungees getting weathered. Or laziness from employees.

In the last 10 years in the construction business I have had some close calls
Because of that I developed 2 new products to make it safer, easier, & faster to tie down Materials such as Pipe, Lumber, Flashing, Rebar etc.

I call it The Load-Helper. It is a simple product that fits over the front or the rear of the load it is used in conjunction with whatever tie down straps are being used.

Also this news article

I also developed a product that secures ladders faster, easier. Safer No more rope or bungees 1 Ladder-Master can secure up to three ladders with 1 tie down & is lockable .

I need more people to see this product that is why I hope you can direct me to someone that can write an article about Load-Helper.

Thank yo

Hey Starwalk:
I absolutely agree, development of alternative fuel sources would be optimal. And while there is a lot of talk about it, and even some projects here and there, the fact of the matter is, there aren't any serious efforts going on to reduce or eliminate our dependence on gasoline. Hmmmmm...wonder why?

Hmmmm...I wonder why as well. I guess its just the simple law of supply and demand with demand working in favor of international as well as domestic oil companies. Until there is a radical change within this equation, this will continue to be an ongoing discussion for many years to come.....Great topic, Tony!
