Missing Gun

Okay, this isnt really entertainment but not news either.   If a person bought a gun, years ago and it was stored at a house that has now been sold and now the owner of that home has passed, what should the person who bought the gun and who its registered to do?  Said person is trying to be responsible but does not want to get into any trouble with the police.  The  receipt for the gun is long gone , so there are no serial numbers to report.
