Okay Survivormom, I graduated high school in 1983, So it seems we have a few things in common. How true are things you wrote? Things have sure changed over the past thirty years. I remember when I was a kid we could sleep at night with the doors and windows open and not worry about getting robbed. Or leaving your car unlocked with the windows down and not worry. We could play outside and go wherever as long as we were home before the street lights came on. Now days you can’t let your kids out of your site even when playing in the front yard. This is what the new generation thinks is best.

Sorry, but I partly agree with today's handling of scenario 1 with the gun. I would not be that extreme, but guns really should NOT be in schools.

And number 3, about ADD; ADD is a real disorder.

And a whipping with a belt, come on!

These emails are designed to instill a sense of fear and paranoia amongst those who get them.

It is designed to manipulate people into being afraid and promotes hatred and despair.

Yeah ADD is a real disorder but it is WAY over diagnosed, if people would try some other alternatives first rather than just jumping to put them on medication, some kids have disrupptive family life that prevent them from concentrating at school, they may not be getting enough sleep at night i'm just tired of teachers and parents jumping head first giving these kids medication like it is the only solution! there are so many side effeects of these medications alot of times it does more harm to the child than good!

Thank you huntermorrison!

Gorbash I felt no fear from this email just from my parents back when I was younger. The way it should still be!! How is this post suppose to be manipulative and promote hatred and despair when all it is doing is speaking the truth from the past to the present?

And polarbear you are right... ADD is a serious disorder. But in todays world the only soultion for "troubled" kids is putting them on ritalin. That is all doctors and teachers want to do with these kids instead of getting to the REAL problem. And whipping with a belt? What? Back in my days parents were allowed to whip with a belt. My parents put the fear of God in me and I believe that is the way it should still be. We would not be having all these kids running the parents, teachers, and everyone else.

Yes Ellack I graduated in 1985 so we do have alot in common. I can remember being out all day and knew when it was time for dinner to be home and go back out until the street lights came on. Came home late the belt was waiting. It took one time for me to learn that one. I can also rmeember a time when I was in elementary my friends and I were playing around with the water fountain in the bathroom (the kind where you had to stand on the bar to turn the water on) and a teacher came in and sent us to the office, we got a few swats on our butts and had more waiting for us when we got home. I feel it should still be that way. Give our schools the authority back if the parents don't want it.

yeah thats what we need to do...dump another problem on our schools....schools should teach...parents discipline....and if they dont then prison should await...we ll let society teach you about parenting what yours couldnt...discipline your kids and let the schools do the teaching

That's a huge part of the problem, Ricky. So many parents DON'T discipline their kids anymore, and many schools have an awful lot of "troubled youth" causing problems for the rest of the students and teachers. When kids get in trouble anymore, it seems as though the parents always take the child's side, and often it's a child who has a lengthy history of trouble. The schools would LOVE to let parents handle the disciplining of their kids, if only it occurred more often....

You're right ricky. The schools should not have to worry about this problem, but like Erock says a lot of the parents just don't do it. Not sure how old you are, but that is the way it just was when I was in school. It was not because the paretns did not want the responsibility of disciplining. Yes let the teachers do the teaching and let the office do what they need to.

The post is designed to manipulate conservatives into thinking they can somehow turn back the clocks to some perfect and idyllic past that never existed.

There were always problems in school, just different ones.

Gorbash, I agree there were problems back then too. What I think is, look how things are now compared to the past. It is scary how much it has changed. The question is how much scarier can it get 30 years from now? What is going to happen? Why can't we turn back the clocks and change what we changed. Nobody said it was a perfect world back then, just a bit safer.

you missed my point entirely mom....the office should discipline and encourage teachers and support personnel....the kids should be sent home and social services should be brought into the home for an intervention program...the parent should be closely monitored ie...booze, drugs, sex etc.....and if the program isnt followed by the parent a prison sentence of a minimum of six months would follow....tough love ....lets see those law and order types dance to that tune...our schools wont get better if society keeps dumping its trash in their laps...make parents responsible for their actions...or lack of action...and let the schools educate...then i wont have to be correcting spelling and history all day

im advocating imprisoning parents for not disciplining their children....a war on irresponsible parenting...i would also suspend any child support for truant students...illiterates arent going to care unless it hurts them....some people shouldnt be parents....we cant do anything about that...but we can make life more difficult for them and better for the rest of us...take back our schools

It is NOT more dangerous now compared to then, only the dangers have changed, and danger and crime and other social problems have always existed and always will- and it is NOT possible to turn back time, and it is a massive waste of time and very dangerous to even try.

Gorbash, great comment! Most of the problems we have today existed back then too, they were just not talked about. Rape, pedophilia and child molestation existed, many children were abused by members of their own family and it was kept quiet. ANd kids getting beaten with an belt IS abuse! It is today and it was abuse back then, except people tolerated it. Another thing that was tolerated back in "the good old days" is racism and prejudice. Blacks, women and gays were all inferior and violence against them was tolerated. I can see the "Right Wing" connection because the good old days were good only for white, conservative republican, conformist males. They want to set us back to the time when they ruled the world.

Gorbash, the post was intended for those of us who have seen then and now, don't try to politicize it because you really don't have a clue about life in the 50's 60's and 70's. Try to read something for what it is, not what you can use for your propaganda mill.

Oh Lord...here we go again!!!
Why oh why can not one post go by without the word racism and prejudice be in it. Why do some of you have to make such drama out of these posts. Just see it for what it is. It's not justifying abuse, rape, racism, or anything else you find insulting. It's just a post of then and now. Geez!
