Corporal Wayne Geiger of the Owens Valley was the first to come home in a box from Iraq. A member of 2nd platoon, H Company, 3rd squad, 2nd Stryker Calvary Regiment, at camp Stryker, Baghdad.
He was killed by an IED in Baghdad on 10/18/07. He was the son of Lt. Randy Geiger and civil officer Kim Geiger of the Inyo sheriffs department residing in Lone Pine,CA.
He was completing his 13th month of deployment.
I was my way to work yesterday when upon entering the town of Bishop, there were hundreds of people who had turned out in support his of family and to pay tribute to one of our own who is gone fer good. We ,live in a very sparsely populated county, so every one pretty much knows about everybody else. Is difficult to convey the emotions of seeing the grief etched upon so many faces as i drove down the street............
I was listning to a vet the other day, and he said pretty much what sums up the war in Iraq (he survived D-Day and was finally wounded and captured during the battle of the Huertgen forest in WW2, where 24,000 (an additional 9,000 lost to combat fatigue and trench foot) americans were killed in action over a 4 month period, so i reckon he would know what he's talking about when talking about war).
He said very simply, that there is no such thing as a "Good War", there are only wars of necessity. He asked "were we under threat of invasion from Iraq?" There was no WMD's ever found. There was no Al-Quida till after we invaded Iraq (Saddam would not tolerate them). So upon faulty intelligence we launched into a war........................ and with no transistion to peace or exit stratigy either.
The going to war over an invisible "Imminent Threat" has cost us dearly. This country has not faced a credible "Imminent Threat" since the cuban missle crisis.
How many more of our folks have to die, become maimed or suffer the effects PTS before we get the hell outta of a country that never poised a threat to us in the first damn place. Hell, what can be said after 4 years of war there in Iraq, except when are we leaving?
What will we have accomplished after we do leave? What will we be getting for the blood that has been spilt not only by our own folks and allies, but fer all the civilian non-combatants of Iraq that have suffered the highest losses in this war.........................
