THIS IS AN E-MAIL I RECIEVED YESTERDAY. PLEASE TAKE A MOMENT TO READ IT.....

Last week, while traveling to Chicago on business, I noticed a Marine sergeant traveling with a folded flag, but did not put two and two together.

After we boarded our flight, I turned to the sergeant, who'd been invited to sit in First Class (across from me), and inquired if he was heading home.

"No", he responded.

"Heading out?", I asked.

"No, I'm escorting a soldier home."

"Going to pick him up?"

"No, he is with me right now. He was killed in Iraq, I'm taking him home to his family."

The realization of what he had been asked to do hit me like a punch in the gut. It was an honor for him. He told me that, even though he did not the soldier personally, he had delivered the news of his passing to the soldier's family and felt as if he new them after having many conversations in so few days.

I turned back to him, extended my hand, and said..."THANK YOU. For doing what you do so that my family can do what we do."

Upon landing in Chicago, the pilot stopped short of the gate and made the following announcement over the intercom:     " Ladies and gentlemen, I would like to note that we have had the honor of having Sergeant Steeley of the United States Marine Corps join us on this flight. He is escorting a fallen comrad home to his family. I ask that you please remain in your seats when we open the foreward door to allow Sergeant Steeley to deplane and recieve his fellow soldier. We will then turn off the seat belt sign."

Without a sound, all went as requested. I noticed the sergeant saluting the casket as it was brought off the plane, and his action made me realize that I am proud to an american.

So, here's a public "Thank you" to our military mem and women for what you do so we can live the way we do.

RED FRIDAYS-

In an attempt to show support for our troops in Iraq and all around the world, we are asking that on this Friday and, every Friday thereafter, everyone wear something red. We hope RED FRIDAY'S will continue until all of our soldiers are safely home. If you are proud to be American and support our soldiers and what they are doing, please join us in our effort.

DON'T FORGET............WEAR RED ON FRIDAY'S!!!

oh wow. That was beautiful, by far the MOST uplifting, inspiring, and hopeful story I've read this week. Thank you so much for sharing that with us. Hopeful, in the truth that our love for one another is still there, maybe just dormant at times. Uplifting, because we have so much to be thankful for, and little to complain about. Inspiring, because this demonstrates the kindness and compassion of strangers. We still have a chance to redeem ourselves every single day. Thanks agian, you've restored my belief in the American spirit with this simple little post. These are the stories we should be hearing more of. Not everyone or everything is bad in the United States of America. I'm more proud today, than yesterday.(and I was pretty damn proud to live in this country yesterday). I will wear red today and EVERY SINGLE FRIDAY thereafter until our brave soilders come home!

Thanks, salswife, I needed that!
It's been a long time since my first adventure, 2/19/1945, at Iwo Jima.

When our landing ship withdrew from the
beach where we had unloaded lotz of stuff
and personnel (Marines & SeaBees) the
crew had an opportunity to shower and take
a brief rest while loading for the next
landing.

Sailors in those days wore Navy-Issue clothes
and the GI sox were white. When I removed
mine preparing to shower, they were red from
the sand on the beach, soaked with the Marines
who had been wounded or killed trying to reach
safety on the other side.

In a little over a month there were about 50,000 American wounded and dead -- and 26,000 Japanese dead. All on a tiny 8 square mile speck of ground hardly visible on the map of the world.

It annoys me greatly when I see film of people spitting on and burning our flag. Few people will ever know or understand how I feel about the men whose coffins are drapped with it.

I wept while writing the previous comment, please forgive a few typos and omissions.

the phrase soaked with the marines was intended to read "soaked with the blood of the Marines."

Blessed Be!

Making matters even worse...I don't know how to type!! I use the one finger hunt and find style of typing!! It's terrible! Let me know if you have any luck finding out how to do it the easy way! God bless!!
