VIDEO: Police Beating Video Caught on Tape by FOX 29-Philadelphia

Last week old wounds were reopened after that shocking abortion of justice in New York when the three officers who murdered that young man in a hail of 50 shots fired were found not guilty at their bench trial. Now we have yet another disgusting case of police brutality. Caught on tape by the local FOX affiliate in Philadelphia, about twelve police officers beating three men. The three men are pulled from the car and thrown on the ground. Then they are kicked and punched as they are on the ground.

The police try to justify this blatant act of police brutality by claiming the police were under "stress and pressure" because of the death of another officer. That's not an excuse!! You cannot excuse savagely beating a person because you are under "stress and pressure". How many of us are stressed or under pressure at work or school at times? Not an excuse. If you are an officer of the law it's your job to uphold the law. To these officers in Philadelphia as well as the three in New York: you did the crime, now you need to do the time!

FROM: The New York Times

PHILADELPHIA — About 12 police officers were videotaped on Monday beating three men stopped in response to a drug-related shooting, and six of the officers have been removed from patrols, Police Commissioner Charles H. Ramsey said Wednesday.

In the incident, captured by a Fox TV helicopter, officers surrounded a car carrying the three men. They were pulled from the car, and two were kicked and punched on the ground by officers on the driver’s side. The third man was beaten by other officers on the passenger side.

The incident, on Monday night, in the Hunting Park section followed the shooting death of Sgt. Stephen Liczbinski, 39, a 12-year member of the force, on Saturday in the nearby Port Richmond section.

Sergeant Liczbinski was pursuing three robbery suspects. The police arrested a man sought in the case late Wednesday night, the Associated Press reported. Another was arrested on Sunday, and a third was fatally shot by an officer shortly after the officer’s killing, The A.P. said.

Mr. Ramsey said at a news conference that the police were under great "stress and pressure" after Sergeant Liczbinski’s death. He is the third Philadelphia officer to be killed in the line of duty in the last two years.

But, Mr. Ramsey added, there was no excuse for the behavior on the videotape.

The video is being examined to try to identify more officers involved in the beatings. Mr. Ramsey said he expected more officers to be reassigned to administrative duties as a result.

District Attorney Lynne Abraham will decide on filing criminal charges against the officers, Mr. Ramsey said.

The new mayor, Michael A. Nutter, has emphasized reducing the violence that has given Philadelphia one of the highest murder rates in the nation.

Mr. Nutter and Mr. Ramsey are trying to overcome decades of distrust between the mostly black residents of areas like North Philadelphia and a largely white police force.

The beating victims, all from North Philadelphia, have all been charged with assault, conspiracy and recklessly endangering another person. D. Scott Perrine, a lawyer for the three, called the incident a blatant example of police brutality.

"We have not seen stuff like this since the 1960s and the 1970s in Philadelphia," Mr. Perrine said. "These officers are criminals, and they should be prosecuted."

He denied that his clients had any connection with the shooting of Sergeant Liczbinski, and he said the Police Department was seeking to explain the “zealousness” of the officers in the incident by saying the force as a whole was distressed and exhausted by the sergeant’s death.

The three men are being held on bail, awaiting a preliminary hearing on May 16.

Watch: Video On YouTube

BALTIMORE -- A Baltimore police officer shown on a YouTube video berating and roughly handling a skateboarder at the Inner Harbor has been suspended.

Sterling Clifford, a spokesman for the Baltimore Police Department and the mayor's office, said the incident involving Officer Salvatore Rivieri, a 17-year veteran, is the subject of an internal affairs investigation.

The video, apparently shot last summer, shows Rivieri putting the youth, 14-year-old Eric Bush, into a headlock and pushing him to the ground.

The boy said he did not hear an order that the officer had given him about skateboarding at the Harbor.

Rivieri repeatedly got upset at being called "dude" in the video. "I'm not 'man.' I'm not 'dude,' I am Officer Rivieri," he told the teen. "The sooner you learn that, the longer you are going to live in this world. Because you go around doing this kind of stuff and somebody is going to kill you."

Rivieri told The Sun on Sunday that he did not know that the incident had been recorded or posted on the Internet. He acknowledged having encounters with skateboarders at the Inner Harbor, where skateboarding is banned, last summer, and told a reporter that he would watch the video on YouTube.

After he was suspended Monday, Rivieri said he had no comment.

Paul Blair, head of the police union, had not seen the video but he warns that videos show only part of a story.

The video came to the attention of police after a Sun reporter e-mailed the 3 1/2 minute link to the police Sunday morning.

It seems every blog I click on doesn't have any comments even though it says there are comments.  Is FOX now censoring/deleting our comments too?  Is there some kind of "hacker issue" or is the system down?

*Barack Hussain Obama

*Rudolph Hitler Guiliani

*Hillary Stalin Clinton

*Mike BinLaden Huckabee

*John Mussolini Edwards

*Mitt Ahmadinejad Romney

Obviously the above names listed are not true.  However, they show just how asinine it is to judge an individual by their name.  If any of the above were the candidates actual names, would that make them any less competent to be president?  Really, what's in a name?

Perhaps the real reason behind all this attention and mud slinging about Mr. Obama's name is due to the fact the Republicans are shaking in their boots.  Barack Obama, a Black man, won the Iowa Caucus.   If a Black man did that well in a mostly white state like Iowa, he has a serious chance at winning the nomination as well as the Presidency.  This would not be a surprise, considering this isn't the first time the Republican party has resorted to fear mongering and dirty tricks to win an election.  Remember the last election.  Rather than discussing real issues that actually affect American citizens, the election turned into a pissing match about same-sex marriage and abortion.  Same-sex marriage? Is that really the biggest issue affecting us? With a never-ending war, gas prices surging, an economy heades towards recession and an ever growing national debt; along with a need for Universal Health Care and real reform to our energy policy to save our environment along with cutting energy costs for citizens, I don't even give childish [...] like Barack Hussain Obama's middle name a second thought.

And on top of the middle name nonsense, there is also a fear of a woman or Black man as president.  How do these characteristics make any person more or less worhty of holding that office?  When considering presidential candidates, remember the following phrase, "CHARACTER, not COLOR(or gender)".  I'm really surprised by this.  I was sure the big, overplayed, over hyped issue would be immigration.  This definately will be an interesting election year.  I can't wait to see how the caucuses and primaries turn out.

This place is lame. Seriously. Over the last two to three days, there has been a lack of original and intelligent thought here. Skimming over the "Political" category, I see the same Barack Obama Hating chain letter retread posted multiple times. This is getting VERY old VERY fast. Wow, his middle name is Hussain!! OMG! Seriously, we are making a big deal over a man's name.

Then, I skimmed the "News" category, finally something semi-original. NOT. Just another Pablo_Kielbasa retread about Barack Obama being black. Really? I had no idea until you posted that! LOL! And most recently a photoshopped photo of Obama smoking. And he smoked pot. Is this supposed to make me NOT like him? Surprising it actually makes me like him MORE. Maybe we'll make some REAL progress on medicinal marijuana(another subject for another day). And how clever, play the "cardiovascular" card. Interesting strategy from the party that has Dick "Heart Attack" Cheney.

"The Age Of Mega-Fires" from CBS News 60 Minutes, December 30, 2007.

Last fire season was the worst in recorded history. This year was a close second, with nearly nine million acres burned. The men and women facing the flames are elite federal firefighters called "Hotshots."

Nationwide there are 92 hotshot crews of 20 members each. 60 Minutes found a group of New Mexico hotshots in the Salmon River Mountains of Idaho. They had set up camp in a burned-out patch of forest with fire raging all around. They were hitting the day, exhausted, halfway through a 14-day shift.

Leaving camp to scout out the situation, the firefighters anticipated a mess and they found it: the valley was engulfed in smoke. The flames blew through the firebreak lines they dug the day before.

"We were trying to turn the corner yesterday, and that's when it kind of blew out. I think we got more ground over here that's been taken. Any questions?" a firefighter said.

No question, this day the fire won. It surged across the mountain, forcing the hotshots to evacuate. All across the West, crews are playing defense, often pulling back to let acres burn, but standing firm to save communities. One stand this season came in August at Ketchum, Idaho. Forecasters said it was 99 percent certain Ketchum would be lost if nothing was done. Some 1,700 local, state, and federal firefighters came from across the nation, working around the clock from a mountainside camp.

Residents were evacuated, as 300-foot flames headed for homes.

60 Minutes joined up with Tom Boatner, who after 30 years on the fire line, was the chief of fire operations for the federal government.

"A fire of this size and this intensity in this country would have been extremely rare 15, 20 years they're commonplace these days," Boatner says.

"Ten years ago, if you had a 100,000 acre fire, you were talking about a huge fire. And if we had one or two of those a year, that was probably unusual. Now we talk about 200,000 acre fires like it's just another day at the office. It's been a huge change," he says.

Asked what the biggest fires now are, Boatner says, "We’ve had, I believe, two fires this summer that have been over 500,000 acres, half a million acres, and one of those was over 600,000 acres."

"You wouldn’t have expected to see this how recently?" Pelley asks.

"We got records going back to 1960 of the acres burned in America. So, that's 47 fire seasons. Seven of the 10 busiest fire seasons have been since 1999," Boatner says.

"You know what? It’s hotter than hell right here," Pelley remarks.

"It's been pretty damn hot," Boatner says. "You can imagine the challenge for young men and women with hand tools like this to come up here and put out a fire like this, but there's thousands of people down there with multimillion dollar homes that are counting on them to do that."

It was 20 years ago that firefighters got their first glimpse of what was to come. In 1988, a third of Yellowstone National Park burned. Since then, fires have broken records in nine states. Several mega-fires, like one in Arizona, have burned over half a million acres each.

Why are there more of these fires? Turns out the forest service is partly to blame with a policy it started 100 years ago.

The policy was to put out all fires immediately. "Because we so successfully fought fire and eliminated fire from this ecosystem for a hundred years, because we thought that was the right thing to do, we’ve allowed a huge buildup of fuel in these woods. So now, when the fires get going, there’s a lot more to burn than historically you would’ve seen in a forest like this," Boatner explains.

"Is it possible that we're gonna get to the point where we have these mega-fires and we just can't fight them because they're too large?" Pelley asks.

"Well, we're there already. We have identified numerous fires this summer that we know we can't put out with the resources we have available. Because of the severity of the burning conditions and the size of the fires," Boatner explains.

The severity of the burning and size of the fires caught the eye of Tom Swetnam, one of the world's leading fire ecologists. He wanted to know what's touched off this annual inferno and whether it's truly a historic change.

At the University of Arizona, Swetnam keeps a remarkable woodpile, comprised of the largest collection of tree rings in the world. His rings go back 9,000 years, and each one of those rings captures one year of climate history.

Swetnam found recent decades have been the hottest in at least 1,000 years. And recently, he and a team of top climate scientists discovered something else: a dramatic increase in fires high in the mountains, where fires were rare.

"As the spring is arriving earlier because of warming conditions, the snow on these high mountain areas is melting and running off. So the logs and the branches and the tree needles all can dry out more quickly and have a longer time period to be dry. And so there's a longer time period and opportunity for fires to start," Swetnam says

"The spring comes earlier, so the fire season is just longer," Pelley remarks.

"That's right. The fire season in the last 15 years or so has increased more than two months over the whole Western U.S. So actually 78 days of average longer fire season in the last 15 years compared to the previous 15 or 20 years," Swetnam says.

Swetnam says that climate change -- global warming -- has increased temperatures in the West about one degree and that has caused four times more fires. Swetnam and his colleagues published those findings in the journal "Science," and the world’s leading researchers on climate change have endorsed their conclusions.

But what was news to the scientists is something Tom Boatner has noticed for about ten years now. "This kind of low brush would normally be really moist and actually be a fairly good barrier to fire. But as I look at this I just see wilted leaves everywhere. There's no moisture left in them. They're dead," he points out.

Professor Swetnam wanted to show 60 Minutes just how much has changed, so he brought Pelley to the top of Arizona's Mount Lemon. Two mega-fires there killed everything, even the Ponderosa Pines.

"You know, I was always taught that Ponderosas were big, robust trees that were built to withstand fire," Pelley remarks. "And that when everything else burned off, the Ponderosas were still standing. But look at them."

"The Ponderosas are able to withstand the low severity fires where you get flames of maybe one to two or three feet high. But now the behavior of these fires is off the scale," Swetnam says.

Asked how much things have changed, Swetnam tells Pelley, "Well, we're seeing century-old forests that had never sustained these kinds of fires before, being razed to the ground."

Back at the battle to save Ketchum, Idaho, the day shift was coming off, and the night shift going on.

How long does it take to bring a fire like this under control?

Says Tom Boatner, "This particular fire is about 45,000 acres and they’ve been working on it for about 11 or 12 days and they've got it about 50 percent contained and with any luck they will finish containing this fire in another five or six days something like that."

Containing it meant fighting fire with fire. Using drip torches, they started a controlled burn around the town, creating a barrier, so that when the forest fire hit there'd be nothing left to burn. These pre-burns are risky though. Trees can torch suddenly and explosively, sending embers up to a mile away.

By daybreak on the 18th day, the gamble had paid off. The blaze came within 100 feet of some homes, but not one home was lost. It will take years for this forest to recover, but Tom Swetnam told Pelley with these new super hot fires some forests may never grow back.

"We used to have forest soil here that might have been this deep," he says, indicating about a foot of depth, "but now we're just down to rock."

"So you're down to mineral and sort of a rock, sort of armored soil. And that is not a good habitat for trees to re-establish," Swetnam says.

"Where do you think all this is headed?" Pelley asks,

"As fires continue to burn, these mega-fires continue to burn, we may see ultimately a majority, maybe more than half of the forest land converting to other forest, other types of ecosystems," Swetnam says.

"Wait a minute. Did you just say that there's a reasonable chance we could lose half of the forests in the West?" Pelley asks.

"Yes, within some decades to a century, as warming continues, and we continue to get large scale fires," Swetnam replies.

Swetnam says that this is what we have to look forward to. He estimates, in the Southwest alone, nearly two million acres of forest are gone and won't come back for centuries. The hotshots are already planning for the next fire season. In 2006, the feds spent $2 billion on fire fighting, seven times more than just ten years ago.

"You know, there are a lot of people who don't believe in climate change," Pelley remarks.

"You won't find them on the fire line in the American West anymore," Tom Boatner says. "'Cause we've had climate change beat into us over the last ten or fifteen years. We know what we’re seeing, and we're dealing with a period of climate, in terms of temperature and humidity and drought that's different than anything people have seen in our lifetimes."

Several parts of this story are italicized for emphaisis because they show that Global Warming IS in fact effecting us and in a big way. Contrary to what the Republican Party, several bloggers on this site and so-called "Scientists" say, Global Warming IS an issue and it is having devastatimg effects. I know the Global Warming advocates are always criticized for "over-hyping" the effects of Global Warming, but look at this. A simple, small change: Spring arriving sooner, causing snow to melt sooner and the trees to dry out quicker is responsible for these devastating fires.

Another commonly attacked point is the amount of change in the evnironment over time. Along with the slight temperature change, the fire season has increased by two months. One degree increase in temperature, FOUR times more fires. The low-lying brush that once was moist and acted as a barrier is now dry. The Ponderosas that were always known to be tough and survive the fires are now being threatened bty more intense fires. Century old forests are being destroyed. Not only that, all this wood is fuel to these mega-fires that are spreading to residential areas, causing damage and destruction to people's homes.

So, go ahead and keep trying to deny Global Warming and Climate Change. The evidence is overwhelming---something IS going on.

Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays everyone! This holiday, as you spend time with your families, remember to stop and think about those who are not here to spend the holidays with their families. Another Christmas has come and almost is over and we still have troops in Iraq. Take a moment to think about our finest who are serving their country and the over 3000 who have died.

Political parties aside, let's hope this year we have a REAL VICTORY in Iraq! The victory I am talking about is our troops coming home. Coming home in time to spend next Thanksgving/Christmas/Holiday Season with family. these young men and women deserve better.

Now I'd like to share two of my favorite Christmas songs in the spirit of Peace and Giving:

NBC's "Green" logo.

That's right, GREEN WEEK! Not GLOBAL WARMING Week.  Not AL GORE WEEK.  GREEN WEEK, as in being green.  This means practicing things like conserving energy, recycling, not polluting the environment and looking into clean, energy efficient fuels.  I believe in these things.  Not because some politician made a movie a while back; not because of what some politician said, but because they are the RIGHT things to do.  Protecting our environment and keeping it clean SHOULD NOT be a political issue.  Yet it is.  Politicians are bought off by oil company contributions or have interests in these companies.  Selfish greed influences energy policy, instead of what's in the best interest of public health and safety.  These companies even have "scientists"(if you can even call them that) in their pockets that disregard that anything is happening at all and come up with excuses rather than solutions.  How can you call yourself a scientist when you sign something stating that you want absolutely no part of certain scientific research?  Isn't that the main idea of science: being open to new discoveries and investigating and coming up with new ideas?  Even if you don't believe in global warming, at least acknowledge that conservation and environmental protection are good things.  I'm not a scientist, I'm not 100% sure what will happen in 20 years, just look at how inaccurate local weather forecasts are a few days out.  But I do think "What if?"  What if things do take a turn for the worse?  I do think we should be spending more time developing alternative fuel sources (just look at gas prices!) and not trashing the place we live.

And I know how a few "special" individuals love to mock and make fun of environmental protection.  Many of these "special" individuals are in elected office.  Just look at the extremely "special" person we call president! LOL!  All I can say is make a choice-either you support these conservation-mockers and support the downfall of society and our planet; OR you conserve energy and support politicians that believe in our planet's best interests rather than their and their criminal cronies best interests in mind.

Make it a great place to live(or not), the choice is YOURS!

It's time to get over this. The incident in question happened in September. What is wrong with the world, we're making a big deal out of something insignificant and unimportant. Were his actions really that bad? No. He was standing during the national anthem, he wasn't talking or doing anything else rude. Who cares where his hands were! They were folded respectfully. It's insane that the Republican propaganda machine is at work to make something unimportant into a major issue. When I go into the voting booth, I'm not making my decision based on what silly thing the candidate did or didn't do. I'm more concerned with where they stand on the issues.

And before you are so quick to judge Mr. Obama for his actions, take a look at where this guy thinks his heart is!

Editor's note: I've had this one for a while and after reading some of the racism on another blog, I decided to post this one.

John Gibson

Thanks alot John Gibson for throwing another log on the fire of racism. On October 10th, John Gibson was discussing the shooting at Success Tech in Cleveland and he said:

"because the school is very heavily African-American, I did leap to a conclusion that the shooter might have been African-American."

After learning Asa Coon killed himself, Gibson goes on to say:

"knew this was not a classic hip-hop shooting"

"Hip-hoppers do not kill themselves. They walk away. Now, I didn't need to hear the kid was white with blond hair. Once he'd shot himself in the head, no hip-hopper."

Later in the show, Gibson brings up the fact he knew the shooter was white.

"All right, it turns out, though, the kid in Cleveland who did the shooting today -- three teachers, three students -- white."

"And I could tell right away 'cause he killed himself. Black shooters don't do that; they shoot and move on."

Gibson just can't let it go. This is what he said later to an black caller:

"one of the other things that you also don't do -- you being the plural of the [black] community -- is you don't shoot somebody and then kill yourself."

Gibson continues:

"So when I heard the kid shot himself, I said, well, you know, ordinarily I would expect it to maybe be a rapper, thug, gangster on campus with his nine -- 'I shining my nine, you know how I do.' But, you know, it turns out it was a kid who would shoot himself -- well, story over, not a black kid."

And the best is yet to come: [The caller makes a comment about Sharpton and Jackson and how whites are 20% of the problem]

"Am I a part of your 20-percent white man problem?" [Caller: Oh,Yeah] "Oh man, you had to go racist on me? OK, I thought the kid was a black man, I'll admit it, until I heard he shot himself. Does that make me a racist?"

Does that make him a racist?

YES!

You may be saying "what's the point of this" or "here he goes on another racism rant" but this is important because once again a person in the media is using his show to show off his ignorance and racism. That whole conversation had no place in a news program. Do you honestly think anyone said "I wonder what race the shooter is" when they first heard about this story? I think not. The normal, human response is to want to know if anyone was injured, are the police on the scene and is the situation under control? Is the suspect in custody? Family members of those in the building want to know about injuries or if anyone is at the hospital.

The only people who are interested in the race of the shooter are those who were hpoing it was a black kid so they have something else to back up their racist beliefs. This is a disgusting display for any station, especially a national broadcast. To have a "reporter" come out on the air and basically say he automatically assumes any shooting is committed by a black person, unless the shooter kills themself.

If you think prominent Conservative/Right Wing media figures are not prejudice and racist, think again. Bill O'Reilly really showed his ignorance and stupidity in this one(but then again he does that everyday!) On September 19, O'Reilly talked about having dinner with Rev. Al Sharpton at Sylvia's, a restaurant in Harlem. Apparently O’Reilly is shocked to find out that restaurants owned by black people and have black customers are actually restaurants. This is what O'Reilly said:

"I couldn't get over the fact that there was no difference between Sylvia's restaurant and any other restaurant in New York City. I mean, it was exactly the same, even though it's run by blacks, primarily black patronship. There wasn't one person in Sylvia's who was screaming, "M-Fer, I want more iced tea." You know, I mean, everybody was — it was like going into an Italian restaurant in an all-white suburb in the sense of people were sitting there, and they were ordering and having fun. And there wasn't any kind of craziness at all."

Maybe it has to do with this problem here or maybe not, but I noticed several new bloggers and their posted several times. It's not just in news, I saw one called ''purplegifts'' posted about a dozen times in entertainment. A little info from FOX8 would be nice!
