When I bring up the subject of a world government, some people think of the weak and ineffective United Nations we have now, or a communist regime like the Soviet Union.

But that's not what I'm talking about.  I'm talking about a real united nations, very similar to the United States of America.  States are individual entities but agree on some common laws.

What do you think?

Can it be done?

Can we live in a world united?

How would you set it up?

It couldn't possibly work without the elemination of corruption, lawyers and politicians. Now if you can legally figure a way to end those issues immediately then you might just have something there Norty. Still don't know if I like the idea though, seems it would also be more of a communist order as well.

"Can it be done? "

I don't see the difference between what you're advocating and what the United Nations IS..

Treating NATIONS as Individual States with Common Interrests,, with regard to World Affairs,, was PRECIRELY what the United Nations was SUPPOSED to be ALL about..

Instead,, they have of late adopted a course leading to a "Socialist" vision of "Unity" through the establishment of a World Authority under a World Government..An Authoritorian Tyranny under the Guise of "for the benefit of the Common Good"..

And NO..History continues to demonstrate TIME and TIME again that "UNITY" of the sort that YOU are talking about can ONLY be accomplished with the THREAT of FORCE,, and the willful USE of force when the threat fails,, such as one might find in a Dictatorship..

And THAT can ONLY lead to the Unity of Subjugation..

Sue it could be done but such ideas only benefit the poor/lazy a “world order” would draw all its strength/money/power etc from the lead nations and disperse it to the lesser nations and the fact is the wealth that you want to “divvy up” will run out and all you will be left with is more poor people and no way to change that situation ...
Tell me do you go door to door every pay day asking if every one on your block has as much money as you do and offering to “even things up” by giving them some of yours if they have less than you ?

But never let the UN take over. WIth Germany and France leaning back Right, I cant see the US going Socialist with Obama, who would love to be Mr ONE WORLD EU guy.

Um...... we use force all the time. We use it against other countries, our own citizens, and even other states. war, civil unrest, civil war

Yes, the use of force is necessary and would indeed have to be used to keep the peace.

Would it be so bad for all nations to attack a rouge country-state? After all, the rouge is breaking international law right?

It's scary to consider ourselves being attacked by the united nations for some crime, however we as states have gotten along pretty well, and with only one war between us that I know of. Isn't it more likely that most of the coercive force used by a united nations would be monetary in nature, and that the countries, especially one as strong and wealthy as ours, would be more likely to face fines and restrictions, rather than tanks?

If you think law and order are a good thing then this plan makes sense. It won't be perfect, but it will improve the lives of billions of people who live in poverty stricken and oppressed countries. It can also mean a real unity of mankind.

If you think the United States is great, imagine a real United Nations.

"Yes, the use of force is necessary and would indeed have to be used to keep the peace."

"Would it be so bad for all nations to attack a rouge country-state? After all, the rouge is breaking international law right?"

Exactly. That is why we are in Iraq!

Your plan sounds all well and good, but it can never work. The impotent UN we have now is proof of that. I don't see a UN anytime soon that will actually work in the capacity it was meant to. Too many countries will ignore the resolutions if they are not in thier particular favor.

This will leave the other members that are actually fully committed to make them toe the line. Much like what is happening today! It has been tried, and it has failed miserably.

I have heard the definition of an idiot is one that will try the same thing over and over, and expect a different result.

That may apply in this case.

However, if you want to entertain the idea of a real United Nations, just like the United States, the only way that would be possible is for the US to take over the world. That is most likely impossible, but that is the only way I can see it happening.

The only way I see this as possible would be with the total elimination of money and self interest from human society.

Global goverment can only have a chance of success if it is Dictatorial in nature. As humans we have viewpoints and beliefs that just can not be reconciled peacfully. Give two countries a vote and they will almost always vote against each other negating the effort.

I find the idea of Global Goverment entertaining and perhaps even somewhat desireable but hardly praticable. We are far from the decent animal that could make this work. Look at our own Nation for example. We can not even get a majority agreement that we should kill people that are activly trying to kill us.

We would have to start with a few basic laws on human rights, freedom of religion, and a few others and agree to take action against countries who won't follow these base rules.

In time, as countries learn to work together, as our views become more homogenous in nature, we could expand the laws.

Surely there are a few things we can agree and act upon.

The thing that bothers me most is that there is no superior power in the UN. What good are non-binding resolutions?

Countries seem basically to act as they please with no repercussions. When we became the United States we had to relenquish some real power to the federal government. If we don't actually give the UN any power then there is no way it can ever be anything but a joke.

what makes everyone think that we aren't already living in a new world order? There isn't a true democracy in the world, including here in the U.S. Look at the Presidential choices in the U.S. Do they really provide much choice?

Does anyone honestly believe that any country is unaffected by the "outside" world or that the Presidents, etc. are all in complete control? Controlling the masses is paramount.

...OK lets “start” with basic human rights , do you think you can get Iran and Israel (let alone the rest of the world) to agree on a statements of basic human rights ? How about Tibet and China , North Korea and Japan , Venezuela and the USA ...etc.
Next lets “talk” about ending world poverty ...what do you call poverty ? What would be “solving it” ? ....a world wide minimum wage ? LOL O I know lets take the world population and divide it by the world GDP and that is what everyone gets paid each day (minus current level USA taxes that is!)

At this moment this very moment, the world has goverments that condone and even enforce unwanted abortion, genital mutilation of women,The murder of girl babies in order to obtain a male child, beheading ,stoning to death for aposty, human slavery, and on and on. Do you really in your wildest imagination believe that such people can be brought together in any sort on society?

You know, Ronco, I was thinking the same thing. Even basic human rights are hard to agree upon. Hell, I still think torture is a crime.

Here's the thing. We have to get the majority of the world to join by offering something That something might be bigger trade, stability, security, peace, or perhaps free nitrogen for your tires. Perhaps only a great external threat can unite us. Perhaps the time isn't right.

When I say poverty stricken I mean countries who need help with organization. Either they need knowledge, they are depressed by constant warfare, or just plain famine.

Just like we all help our fellow states in times of disaster, so the UN will intervene on behalf of the entire world. And we will cheer for our fellow countries when they come out okay.

Think of all of the strife that can be avoided by unity.
