Remember when Mark McGwire testified at that congressional hearing and said he wasn't there to talk about the past, just the future? He was crucified for his remarks and frozen out of any consideration for the next Hall of Fame vote. But after the big investigation into steroids in baseball, we heard Senator Mitchell saying about the same thing.. we shouldn't get mired in the past, but look to the future. I agree to an extent. MLB banned steroids in 2002 and human growth hormone in 2005. I'd say if a player used before the rule changes, he doesn't get punished. If he used after the changes, he gets punished and we move on. The players mentioned in the report are going to get plenty of questions from the media and plenty of heat from the fans.  I'm not condoning the use of steroids and it really does muddy the waters as far as which records are legit. But at least it's out in the open and MLB, the players association and we fans can decide how to deal with it. The report really didn't reveal anything new about McGwire. The only thing we know for sure he used was Andro.. a legal, dietary supplement at the time that anyone could buy at the local nutrition center.

Give me a break!

My hat is off to Oklahoma. The Sooners beat the Tigers on both sides of the ball Saturday night. They deserve to be Big 12 Champs and they deserve to be in a BCS bowl game. But Missouri doesn't? They went from the number-1 ranked team in the country to out of the BCS bowl picture? Even with the loss they finished 6th in the BCS standings! I'm happy for the Illini, but the Tigers beat Illinois and they beat Kansas. They're both slotted for a BCS bowl game and MU is not? The bowl bids definitely show a lack of respect for Mizzou.. but also expose the flaws of the BCS. Maybe they should consider dropping the C out of those initials.

Missouri or Oklahoma... what do you think? I'm picking Missouri. My prediction...

Mizzou 34  Oklahoma 31.

What's your prediction?

That's my prediction (guess) for the big border battle this weekend. What's your prediction? Give it a shot.

We'll check them out Sunday and see who got the closest. No prizes, just Blogger Braggin' rights!  Go Tigers!

I hope Tony La Russa comes back to the Cards. I know some people think it's time for a change and maybe they're right. But he's done a good job with the club and kept us competitive even in the down years. I figure if a guy has more wins that just two other managers in the history of the game, he must be doing something right.

I'd be surprised if Joe Torre leaving the Yanks will make that much difference with the Cardinals situation. I'm sure the Yankees would have some interest in La Russa, but I don't see him going there. That's even farther from his family in California. And does he really want to work for Steinbrenner at this stage of his career? Then again, the lure of the pinstripes might be pretty strong if La Russa is bored here and looking for a fresh challenge.

We should know before long.  He's managed us to the World Series two times in the past four years. I hope he's back to do it again in 2008.

I spent the weekend at Truman Lake near Clinton, Missouri.  That's where some members of  Local 148 of the Operating Engineers for Ameren U-E were holding their annual bass tournament to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. These guys have raised over a million dollars during the 20 years of the tournament.. and they added another 85-thousand dollars this year. I help with the weigh-in of the fish and say a few words during the program. We had about 175 boats entered. 6 lbs, 2 oz took Big Bass honors and the winning TOTAL WEIGHT topped 18 pounds. The guys that put on this tournament do a great job and you couldn't find a better bunch of fishermen than the ones that fish in this one. It really was good fishin' for a great cause! I'll post some pictures in a couple of weeks.

I'm like every Cardinal fan when it comes to Rick Ankiel. It's great to see him come back to the bigs and make a big splash. He has weathered a lot of doubts and down times to resurrect his career after his pitching meltdown. It's really pretty phenomenal. He must be a very tough kid and he's obviously a very talented one. Tony La Russa probably knows better than anyone what Rick went through and Tony seems to really be enjoying the comeback. But he's also cautioned everyone to just let the kid play.  Even if Ankiel is here to stay, he's going to hit some slumps. You can bet those major league pitchers will find some weaknesses and exploit them. There's always a steep learning curve in the pros. We need to be careful not to be too critical when those times come.  But after what he's been through, Ankiel seems to be mature enough to handle it and  pretty well grounded. So yeah, reality will eventually set in, but in the meantime, he;s making the most of his opportunity and living his dream. It sure is fun while it lasts!

A lot of people breathed a sigh of relief when Barry Bonds finally hit 756. They said they were glad it was over so they could stop hearing about it. Well, the Bonds' story is just heating up. Now we wait for the steroid investigations to wrap up and see how he fares with that. Then there's the question in a few  years of the Hall of Fame. The baseball writers were just appalled at the thought of voting for Mark McGwire. He hasn't admitted anything but he did look silly in the Congressional hearing. So, I assume we can expect similar repulsion at the thought of votting Barry into the Hall. Yet, I heard a writer from a Sacremento paper saying he's cast a positive vote. It will be interesting. Tired of hearing about Barry Bonds? You ain't heard nothing yet.

I'm old enough to remember when Hank Aaron was closing in on the career home run title held by Babe Ruth. It was exciting, almost unbelievable. To kids growing up and playing baseball in my generation, the Babe was almost a mythical figure. This guy hit 714 home runs! How could anyone hit that many? And here was a guy about to break that mark. But Hammerin' aaron hit 714 and kept on going to 755. It was an amazing feat by an amazing athlete. Now, Barry Bonds is threatening Aaron's total and will surpass it. But i just can't get excited about it. Especially after reading Game of Shadows. Will it be legit? Yeah, Bonds is a great athlete but did he cheat to become the all-time home run king? Bryan Burwell had an interesting column in Sunday's Post-Dispatch. Here's the link. Bonds brings his show to town next weekend. It will be interesting to see what kind of reception he gets from Redbird fans. What do you think?

As I write this blog.. St. Louis University still does not have a basketball coach. I say "hire Majerus!"  I think SLU should fish or cut bait with it's basketball program. They say they want a top 50 program and they have a new arena on the way. Rick Majerus is a big name coach with a proven track record. Hire him.. give him a shot.. and stay out of his way. If given the resources and left alone, I think he can provide some exciting and winning basketball for the Bills. He can be grumpy and he has a big ego. Some might say the same about Father Biondi. The danger comes if there's not  ehough room for both at the school. However... put up enough "W's" and I think there can be peace and success on the b-ball homefront.

Okay, so the Cards didn't exactly light things up over at Busch in the season opener. But I think they're pretty solid coming out of spring training. I don't think it's out of the question that we could repeat. I know there are a lot of questions about the pitchers we lost and the pitchers we've put in the rotation. But I kind of like the makeup of the staff. If Izzy can stay healthy and Mulder can get healthy, I think we can make it even tougher on some hitters. And we have some hitters that definitely can create headaches for opposing pitchers. I'm looking forward to another great season but we need to get going... afterall, only 161 games to go.

How are you doing on your brackets for the NCAA tourney? My bracket is starting to crumble. I have Florida and Ohio State going to final four. But I also had KU and North Carolina in that group, too.. I could still come out okay since I have Florida and Ohio State meeting in the final with O-State winning the title. That could still  happen. The Bruins are touch but I think Florida will beat UCLA. However, I'm not so sure Ohio State will beat Georgetown. The Hoyas looked pretty good in beating a great North Carolina team. You just never know. But that's why they play the games and why March Madness is such fun! We'll just have to wait and see.

Isn't this a great time of year? Even if you're not a big b-ball fan, you can appreciate March Madness. There's just something special about the college game. I love the school spirit of the fans and the  hustle of the players playing for school pride instead of  multi-million dollar contracts. North Carolina, Ohio State, Kansas, UCLA, Florida, Wisconsin.. so many excellent teams.. and yet, every year we end up pulling for some low seed that unexpectedly works its way through the bracket by upsetting some of the big guys. I like the unpredictability.  It plays havoc with your bracket, but it's what makes March Madness so much fun. Good luck on your brackets... we all need it!

Congratulations to Tony Dungy, Peyton Manning and the Colts! They are deserving Super Bowl champs. Coach Dungy is a super coach and really a class act. It's good to see a good guy finish first. But if the Bears had won, another good guy would have finished first. Lovie Smith is also a great coach and a great guy. Next time the Bears make it to the Super Bowl, I'll be cheering for Lovie and his boys.

I wanted the Bears to win. I really admire Lovie Smith. I wanted the Colts to win. I really admire Tony Dungy. They are both such classy guys and super coaches. I got my wish. It's a Bears/Colts Super Bowl!
Now, who do I root for at the Big Dance? I think I'm going to have to go with Dungy. He's been chasing this dream quite a while. I've always felt that Gruden won the Super Bowl with the team that Tony built at Tampa Bay. Now, it's Tony's time to reap the rewards of what he has built with the Colts. I'd also like to see Peyton Manning get a ring. He's a great competitor. Hey, if 'da Bears win.. I can live with that. But I'm pulling for Tony D and his horses.

I anchor the 5pm and 9pm news at Fox 2. This is the career I chose when my dreams of playing professional baseball faded into reality. Should I coach or go into the news business? I made the right choice. But I have played sports all my life and remain an avid sports fan. When I'm not working, I enjoy working out, riding my motorcycle, playing golf and doing a little fishing.
