Remember when Mark McGwire testified at that congressional hearing and said he wasn't there to talk about the past, just the future? He was crucified for his remarks and frozen out of any consideration for the next Hall of Fame vote. But after the big investigation into steroids in baseball, we heard Senator Mitchell saying about the same thing.. we shouldn't get mired in the past, but look to the future. I agree to an extent. MLB banned steroids in 2002 and human growth hormone in 2005. I'd say if a player used before the rule changes, he doesn't get punished. If he used after the changes, he gets punished and we move on. The players mentioned in the report are going to get plenty of questions from the media and plenty of heat from the fans.  I'm not condoning the use of steroids and it really does muddy the waters as far as which records are legit. But at least it's out in the open and MLB, the players association and we fans can decide how to deal with it. The report really didn't reveal anything new about McGwire. The only thing we know for sure he used was Andro.. a legal, dietary supplement at the time that anyone could buy at the local nutrition center.

I had trouble with Mitchell heading up this investigation . He works for the Red Socks , and Bud Selig hires him ? How many Boston or Milwaukee players were named ? This so-called investigation had almost daily leaks to the press . Cleveland pitcher Paul Byrds name was leaked before game 7 of this years AL playoffs ,
Cleveland vs Boston Hmmmm !

What about our own Rick Ankiel . His doctor , patient HIPAA rights were violated . If I was Ankiel I would sue Mitchel , MLB and Bud Selig . Mr Ankiel broke no laws or MLB rules when he took HGH . But Mitchel and his ( investagators ) placed their own agenda above the law and Ankiels rights .

Steroids can be deadly , and should be outlawed . From the little I know about HGH its a total different deal . Every person has HGH in there system . Some more than others . IT depends on the persons diet and how their pituitary gland reacts . So if player A's pituitary glad releases more HGH than play B's . Does this mean player A can be fined and suspended ?

I for one think MLB has done it once again . Blown a chance too show some class .

I guess if they are going to spend tons of money on this long investigation, call those out that are guilty, make a big deal out of it, you would think then they should be held accountable for their actions. Oh well, what do I know! LOL

Well, I know that bike is mighty fine Tom!! hehe

Peace, Jana<3

Big Mac has nothing to lose because he's already being deleted from the books and the hall of shame. I believe he admitted to using something in the mid 90's that wasn't even illegal then. I think some of the upper jerky boys of the MLB are ticked because he told them the way it is, "I didn't come here to talk about the past...".

We need to treat every single baseball player like they've just had a major car crash with fatalities - drug test! These guys should be randomly tested 6 to 12 times per year by an independent agency.

The drug policy should be a ZERO tolerance rule that if broken, you are FIRED! If Pete Rose can be banned from baseball for life for a little gambling let's remove these cheaters from the game too. The end result is kids wanting to be like a slugger and the only way to get there (they think) is...steroids. No excuses - no sympathy.

Any player on steroids should be "stricken from the record!" Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa, etc.

Some of these ball players got "rich" from taking drugs. HMM, what message is given to our youth here?

They should be fined, and have to pay their "millions" back to the fans who paid to watch "pro ball"! HUH

Tom, I totally agree with you here. I've been saying this for years now. Kind of sick of hearing about the link between McGwire and steroid use . . . Also, when will people learn there is no test for HGH? It is not as simple as it seems it should be . . . However, I do state that it is difficult to regulate substance abuse when it is the players with the options to allow the testing or not. There are just some things that the players' union should not be allowed to vote on and steriod use is at the top of my list.

Nice try...but McGuire's comments are not the same as Mitchell's. McGuire was called to testify specifically about the past and he took a cowards way out. Mitchell's comments were about what happened in the past and what we should do now. McGuire and anyone else who used and still continue to lie about it are no better than Pete Rose. He denied, denied, denied and basically thought everyone was stupid enough to not believe what all the mountains of evidence showed. I have more respect for Giambi than any of the others. At least he admitted it and took the criticism. Now very few people mention his name with this issue comes up. Even if Giambi was forced to admit it at least he did.

McGwire (proper spelling) was "invited" to a witch hunt, disguised as a congressional hearing, for a cheap photo op with sleazy, headline-hunting politicos. He didn't lie under oath, like Raffy and Schill, and now he looks like the brightest one of the bunch. How convenient that all true "fans" want to put the ugliness in the past, and ignore what we all actually knew in 1998. Yet, when Mark actually said that, he's crucified. He said he wanted to help educate youngster on the dangers of PEDs, yet after being mocked by the press, he was forced to withdraw from the spotlight. I'm not a McGwire fan -- actually a Sosa fan -- so I'm not defending him because he's on some pedestal. But get it right.. he had every right to say what he did in the respectful way he did it. He may have gotten some bad PR advice, but he had good intentions. Maybe the grandstanding congressman should spend more time investigating the criminals at the White House than the perceived probems with MLB.

It doesn't matter if he didn't lie like the others, he didn't tell the truth either. He could have easily said what he did and why he did it. He was "crucified" because he didn't man up and do just that. And I did "get it right". If McGwire doen't make the hall it is just as much about not admitting your mistakes as the mistake itself. An don't try to turn the converstation into some kind of liberal political rant. What the heck does the White House have to do with this?

In case you ever check back on this topic, one more point of clarification. "What the does the White House have to do with this?" The current occupant was one of the owners of the Texas Rangers from the late '80s until 1998, whihc just happens to be when steriods exploded in MLB. The Rangers players like Juan Gonzalez and Pudge Rodriguez were blowing up just as much as McGwire and Canseco, and their owners looked the other way just like everyone else. Seems like now is a curious time to find "religion" on this topic, when he was in the front lines for 10 years, running a team, and kept his mouth shut because the cash register was lighting up.

If these drugs are so illegal to use.... Why is it so easy for them to be obtained...??

I anchor the 5pm and 9pm news at Fox 2. This is the career I chose when my dreams of playing professional baseball faded into reality. Should I coach or go into the news business? I made the right choice. But I have played sports all my life and remain an avid sports fan. When I'm not working, I enjoy working out, riding my motorcycle, playing golf and doing a little fishing.
