Let me start of by saying, I am an African American woman. I lived in Philadelphia and it's surrounding areas all my life. I consider myself a decent, hard working human being that has compassion for my family, friends and for all people in need.
Since I have been blogging during this election, I've come across a lot of people who are just as compassionate as I and share my beliefs and views on issues in Philadelphia as well as America. I've also come across people who seem to harbor so much hate and bigotry, whom I would be afraid to live next door to for fear of my life.
These people hate the idea of this man, Barack Obama running for President of the United States. Not because of his intelligence, because they know he's highly intelligent. But because of the color of this man's skin. They make him out to be a muslin because of his name. They make him out to be some kind of terrorist because he was a member in Rev. Wrights church. They make him out to be an elitist because of a verb he used (cling) instead of (embrace). They seem to, no, they want to believe this man is from the filth of the earth. This is so troubling to me that many people still hate a person because of the pigmentation of ones skin in this century as though we are still in the 20th or even 19th century during slavery. Sure, they will come up with all types of excuses, but the bottom line, it's the color that they can't seem to bypass. One day, I would like for someone to explain to me why my dark skin is such a threat. It's only skin. Underneath, I have blood vessels, bones, muscle, just like everyone else God made on this earth.
Since I was a small child, my parents always taught me to judge a person by their character, not by the way they dress, or the way they wear their hair, and most of all, not by the color of their skin. And I lived by this rule all my life and passed it on to my children in hopes of them passing it on to their off spring.
We are now living in the year 2008 not 1908 but yet, the hate that many spew seems as though we've regressed back to 1908. But, there is light at the end of the tunnel. For everyone that still carries hate and bigotry (and this goes for all races and nationalities) there are five that live by the rule, judge a man/women by his/her character not by the color of his/her skin color. This is a proven fact just by looking at Sen. Obama's campaign. I was fortunate enough to be invited to one of Sen. Obama's rallies at the Convention Center in Philadelphia. I have never seen so many people, black, white, Chinese, Korean, Puerto Rican, Jewish, Muslim, young, old, disabled, every kind of person you could think of at this rally. I could feel the warmth and energy in that room. All these people from all these various backgrounds and races had ONE thing in common, CHANGE in this country which this country so badly needs. Change, in the economy, change in high oil prices, change in this mortgage crisis, change in some peoples negative attitutude of race relations, and last but not least, to end this war and bring home our troops. They were not there supporting a black man, but a MAN who believes in this country with all its faults who wants this country to move forward in this 21st century and have promise for our future generation.
Maybe I won't live to see the day all men will be treated as equal, all men to be judged by his character, not by his name or religion or color of his skin. But, it's slowly evolving in this direction. And, it's being led by our younger generation. On any given day, I'll see a young black female, with a young white male holding hands, or a young Korean woman and her Puerto Rican husband with their young child at an amusement park. For me, seeing the races intermingle gives me a good positive feeling. It's showing me that skin color is becoming a thing of the past like lava lamps. It's showing me that the future of my grandson will be more promising. It's showing me that this country is moving in the right direction. I believe once the barrier of race is broken, all things are possible. That is why it's so important that Sen. Obama becomes President of the United States. His presidency will be the milestone of this country truly becoming ONE NATION UNDER GOD.
I know there will always be people who don't want change. Who want hate and bigotry to last a lifetime. This isn't directed at the white race only. There are many blacks, Koreans, Puerto Ricans, etc who harbor hate and bigotry just as well. But, they are being outnumbered and eventually hate and bigotry will be extinct. I want to thank you younger generation for being greatly responsible for breaking downs the wall of hate and bigotry. Continue to move this country forward. Continue to see a man or woman for themselves and to not sterotype any race or nationality. And if your parents are still living in the dark ages of bigotry and hate, show them by your actions that you will not tolerate this kind of thinking in YOUR FUTURE.
