I first heard about this Iowa woman, Jane Hambleton, yesterday on Paul Harvey's commentary while driving in to work.  It's on the msn home page now, with more details. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/22578679/from/ET/?gt1=1075

Mrs Hambleton,  I think deserves a medal for the stance she took regarding her 19 year old son.  She found empty liquor bottles under the seat of her son's car.  Of course, he says they weren't his (hey, we've all tried that argument) , and she says while she believes him, she had set two rules regarding the car...NO BOOZE, and KEEP IT LOCKED.  So she showed him no mercy, and sold the car, via  a newspaper ad that read as follows:

OLDS 1999 Intrigue. Totally uncool parents who obviously don't love teenage son, selling his car. Only driven for three weeks before snoopy mom who needs to get a life found booze under front seat. $3,700/offer. Call meanest mom on the planet.

Don't you just love it?  Hambleton has gotten at least 70 calls from people everywhere congratulating her, thanking her for the example she was setting...from other parents, ER nurses, as far away as Georgia.  She says while the car has been sold, she let the ad run a couple more days.  While it was outrageously expensive, it was worth every penny.

Lynne Spears, Dina Lohan, Kathy Hilton..take note!!

I say AMEN and WAY 2 GO to this Mom. If more parents would take a true interest in their childs well being-and BE SNOOPY-it would change the way children of today are.

Heck-just ask my oldest daughter-I learned ALOT about her life when I got "snoopy" and read her diary LOL!! Needless to say-a good "spannking" and grounded were in order after I read her "novel".

Mik,
I always love those Paul Harvey stories.
More Mom's need to get with the universe and stop letting the "little stars" run the constellation. We have to be investigative, it is a Mom's nature. No rest for the weary until we find out the facts. You see so many children these days doing as they please, while the Parents could give one hoot to controlling their behavior. Oh, and it is also the Mom's priority to be the household judicial Judge. My oldest said, "I thought this was a Democracy?" to which I replied, "It becomes a Democracy when you reach the age to vote and you obtain your voter registration card. Until then, these are my rules, let's follow them."

Any questions? :)

I saw that, too. I have taken the keys away from my now 19-year-old and we had a bit of a fiasco over the holidays. She now has curfews and must ask permission before even heading out the door. My house, my rules. She can profess to hate me all she wants, but I refuse to allow her to live under my roof and think she can get away with anything.

My husband didn't understand how she could take a 19 year old's car and sell it w/out his permission. Easy..if she bought the car and it's in HER name, technically, it's HER car.

My stepdaughter is 18, and going through some issues brought on by her mom being her buddy instead of her mom. She refuses to learn to drive, get a job, sometimes even go to school..and her mom has tried to send Shelly to our house to live. We told Shelly pretty much the same thing ya'll told your kids..just cause you're 18 doesn't mean you get to do whatever the heck you want. You live in our house, you're answerable to US, you go by OUR RULES; and when she heard our rules, she didn't like them at all.
She opted to stay with her mom. Her mom, however keeps saying we need to take Shelly. We tell her Shelly is welcome, but SHELLY has to ask us, not MOM, and since Shelly is 18, we can't force her to do a darn thing. It's Terry's issue, not ours, and Terry and Shelly have to figure it out between them.
Sad, really..Shelly used to be a great kid with an incredible brain..now, her future isn't so bright.

Myself and my wife ended up being the "Last Chance" for her 14 yr old nephew whose mom is doing her second stint on drug charges. First was manufacturing and the second was for selling to an undercover...Both times with him present!! Throughout his entire life he's NEVER had any rules, guidance, etc... But the one thing we had going for us was he used to love to come and stay the weekend with us and knew and understood that we had "house" rules. Low-and-behold after living with us for just 2 weeks before school, so far he's passed every class this semester and has perfect attendance. Both things that have never happened before!! Wether they like it or not, kids thrive on schedules and structure!! Ours is living proof!! The once defiant punk kid that hasn't passed since the second grade (just "Placed" based off testing) is now doing unbelievably well.
Working in the public school system I see just how many absentee parents are actually out there and it's truely disturbing.. My hats off to any parent that actually takes an active role in their kids lives!!

I heard a woman criticizing the the mother's actions as not being "motherly." I think the mother needs a medal and that woman needed a slap.

Right on Donnelly!!

right on her hip pockets!

I heard about this mean mom on KSBJ this morning and I thought it was an awesome story.

I say 3 cheers.

I wonder if Baytown's teenage population would be back up where it was a year ago, if a certain mom would have had the same mindset.
