4TH OF JULY OR INDEPENDENCE DAY??

This time last year I had been blogging for less than a month.  I was glued to this computer constantly, reading and commenting on silly, fun blogs and making great new friends.  Sometimes I would read something here that would really make me think.

Chris Higgins wrote a blog a year ago about whether to call this week's holiday "The 4th of July" or "Independence Day".  He talked about his love for this country and urged us to change our habit of referring to it so casually.  I have thought a lot about that blog.  My patriotism runs deep and is, among other things, at the very core of who I am.  This Friday, July 4, we are honoring OUR United States of America and how WE started out.  "The 4th of July" makes one think of barbeque and picnics....but is not truly honoring this great country that we have been so blessed to be born in.

Happy Independence Day!!

Michelle, My daughter Tricia used to call it BOOM BOOM DAY. Of course she was 3 at the time.
She is now a Captain in the Army, serving in Iraq. She is a nurse. So if it is the same to you, I will wish you a Happy BOOM BOOM DAY!

Mechany, that's interesting....we've been blogging together all this time and I didn't know about your daughter serving our country. Well, I hope and pray she is safe and tell her "thanks" for doing what she is doing.

Jana, have a fun, relaxing, productive(!!) time at Carslyle Lake....I have no idea how to spell that, so I probably botched it up. Oh well!!

Hello all....yes it's a year to be very thankful for what we have for it could be gone tomorrow (or by the election)!

M4W: Take out the "s" and you have it spelled correctly and M4W only $29.95 ... how much is the S/H - sounds like a GREAT deal! ;-)

Everybody be safe!

Honor. Respect. Pride. Duty. As a U.S. Navy Medical Service Corps veteran -- who hails from a family of veterans -- I have to admit that words such as those in your post makes me even more proud, and does the same thing to me as seeing our flag, and the photo Jana posted, hearing our national anthem, and seeing the F-15 fighter jets at the airport, and seeing others in a uniform that's not much different from the one I once wore.

Patriotism is what it's all about. And you're right, July 4th is a day to set aside time -- and thought -- to honor -- and pay tribute to -- all those who have played a role in securing and protecting our country's freedoom. I love the 2nd half of your message! It deserves repeating:

This Friday, July 4, we are honoring OUR United States of America and how WE started out. "The 4th of July" makes one think of barbeque and picnics....but is not truly honoring this great country that we have been so blessed to be born in.

I'm proud to know you and Jana and other hard-core patriots who value and respect what this country is and what it -- and our flag -- stands for. Those blood-red stripes aren't there just for the heck of it....

Love the comments! Love the video, Rosie! Yes...God bless America and God bless Chris and Mechany's daughter and all the service men and women everywhere. On hot days like this, I don't even complain anymore....considering they are in full uniforms and boots in 120+ degree heat. You know??

To all those who are deployed, on foreign soil, this 4th of July is for you. For you are the ones who volunteered to serve our country and can not be here to celebrate the greatest day of the year I SALUTE YOU AND MY FLAG WAVES FOR YOU THIS 4TH OF JULY, INDEPENDENCE DAY.

This weekend when you see someone in the military or their family, when you see a veteran or a 1st responder, don't forget to thank them because FREEDOM ISN'T FREE. I know there is a Memorial Day to remember the fallen but could you also remember all those who fought and died for our freedoms.

To all please have a safe and happy 4th and remember the true meaning of the day.

Happy Independance Day. This is a great blog girl. I'm very proud to be an American and pray for the safety of all of our troops. You are so right about calling it independance day instead of the 4th of July. God Bless the USA!!american flag.

I am proud to be an American and I am thankful for all of the Past and Present soldiers that fought and are still fighting today for our Freedom . The Freedom and Independence that we have fought for and so much desired is Smothered by Corporate Greed and The Free enterprise System that our country was founded on . The working class American Struggles everyday to make ends meet as these big corporations make record profits .Foreign Owned businesses are thriving as American owned businesses are Suffering and being taken over by foreign investors .As we look into the future will we always be the United states of America or will be just be another Poverished Country Threatened by Greed and Power. I could only imagine how Hurt and disappointed our founding fore fathers would be to see what they have fought and died for end up being ultimately owned by Foreign investors and Governed by The all might Dollar . I am sorry to be a wet blanket .. But I am not feeling very Independent when I am paying 4.00 bucks a gallon for Gas . I am also not feeling independent when I have to closely Monitor my bank account and weigh my options if I want to just hang out with Friends .. God Bless America For how ever long that will be ..

There comes a point in your life when you realize who matters, who never did, who won't anymore....and who always will. Don't worry about people from your past; there's a reason they didn't make it to your future. Be kinder than necessary because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle! ~m
