Maybe I'm wrong here but, if poeple would buy more American products would'nt that reduce the number of layoffs and unemployment in our OWN country. My  husband goes thru the threat of layoff every year and it is very scary. I heard Chrysler will not layoff in Mexico because they work cheaper DUH,  well if we would quit bying the foriegn cars and trucks and support our own we might not be where we are today. Just my my own opinion.

You are absolutely right. Unfortunately the bottom line is that foreign-made products are usually cheaper than American-made, and most customers want to save that dollar. As employees, we want to get paid more. It's a vicious cycle, and I don't see us getting out of it.

Another piece of that is that, more than ever, pieces and parts of even American assembled products are manufactured overseas. This is a result of NAFTA, and one sided Tarriff agreements.

This trend WILL continue to occur until someone steps up with the nads to repeal NAFTA (will never happen), and rectify the tarriff situation.

That's right, Baazill. I lost my job at Briggs & Stratton because of NAFTA, as did a lot of my friends. The way things are going, before long we'll do well to buy products that are even assembled in the USA, much less made here!

I agree with all of you, like Rollagirl said, Foreign products are cheaper and as long as that is the case people are going to continue buying foreign products.

Marley, how you doing today? Happy Valentine's Day, Love ya

we own 2 Dodges, but really, how is buying american going to help when the corporations continue to outsource to Mexico, China, India, etc.

The problem is unfortunately not going to be cured by the public alone, big corporatios as well as our government need to keep jobs in the US.

In order to offset market trends, we must begin to be realistic about our economy. The facts are; In Missouri we have lost close to 10,000 jobs since Geroge Bush got in office. And that trend continues. If we as Missourians want to buck this trend, we need to stop giving all these large companys big tax breaks. Because when you give a big company a tax break, all it does is BERAK THE BACK OF THE TAX PAYER....!
Remember TWA World Head Quarters here in St Louis, GONE...! How about MCI World Com. GONE...! Oh, yes even FORD motor plant. GONE...! And don't forget the GM plant reduction to their work force, to what maybe 1,000 workers, soon to be none...!
All got big TAX BREAKS....! from the Missouri government along with big TAX BREAKS...! from ST Louis City and County.
We're STUPID in ST Louis. The word is out..! come to St Louis, promise them the world and steal them blind out of there TAX money...!

littlebow2000, congrats. I have been reading your comments this morning and I believe this last one was the furthest off base you've been today. Before you suggest George Bush is responsible for the loss of 10,000 jobs keep in mind Clinton signed the NAFTA agreement. Forgot to mention that didn't you. Also, MCI was destryed from the inside, not tax breaks. I believe there are a couple of people serving time over that one. TWA was not tax breaks but corporate raider Carl Icon. People in St. Louis are not stupid, we are trying to bring this City back to what it once was. Also, if word were really out about "come to St. Louis for tax breaks" why are we down to a handful of Fortune 500 & 100 companies located in our city. I guess they are stupid also.

That is ridiculous Marley. I can not believe that is what our country has come to. Anything for CEOs to save a buck to pad their own pockets.

i think americans need to demand changes. the first one would be to once again start making everything we need in our own country. GREED- FROM BOTH EMPLOYER AND EMPLOYEE HAS DESTROYED OUR GREAT NATION.

I have to agree with soccermom47, and what every one else is saying here. The problem with Chrysler is that you think you are buying an American made van yet to only find out by someone else that you were told wrong by the dealership where you bought the van from. This has happened to my mom twice now and my husband was the one to tell her that her van was made in Canada and not here in Fenton. My husband works in the south plant and we just keep praying that he will have a job next month when they keep laying off employees. The state needs to look into if Chrysler is already in violation of their tax breaks because of all the people in both plants that have been layed off just this year alone.

lisa, the state is not going to do anything to chrysler about taxes, as long as the plant is running and no equipment is removed they still get all their tax ebatements, believe me I have already checked into this, I also work at the south assembly plant and have for 12 years, as well as my husband makes the seats and will be out of a job too!!!!!!

The unions killed the auto industry, asking for more and more and doing less and less. When the auto makers have to add $1,500 to the price of a car for healthcare benefits for workers there is something wrong.

I think the auto workers are way overpaid for the job they do. I am not saying that the skilled workers shouldn't make a higher wage, but the guys screwing in bolts on a door making $60 grand, that is a little excessive.

You are right dac, our resident liberal littlebow has his facts a bit askew. I believe it was the underhandedness of Clinton that sold us out to China. Everything is made in China these days and we have Slick Willy to blame for that.

I would rather outsource parts of the manufacturing process to Mexico to keep their citizens in Mexico. They are such a poor country they don't really pose a threat to the US as the Chinese do. Because William Jefferson sold them all of our technology for weapons.

JeffcoConservative, you're right on the money. I'm sure littlebow may not agree but if he does a little homework he might find there are other factors that he may be overlooking. He sure seems angry about something.
Thanks for your comments.
