I just learned that next school year there will be 1200 new cameras set in at all the Irving schools.

How much of an invasion of privacy is this? We already have cameras and we haven't had any problems, at least at Macarthur. I understand that they are trying to protect us, but what happens when, as ya'll all like to say, we get out into the 'real world' there aren't going to be hundreds of cameras surrounding us.

I'm just glad the cameras aren't coming in til I'm gone.

Let me hear it.

Mac,

Many things are done using our safety as the reason to violate our freedoms. They have PROVEN accidents have went UP, where they put cameras at red lights??? Yet, many political parasites and fear mongering control freaks want to put up more? It's not about safety, it's about money and control and the effortless money being generated by an automatic public milking machines!:(

Sadly in the name of fear and our safety, YOU will be on camera when you come out in the real world.:( If we the tax payers can be watched 24/7, why can't we put cameras in all these political parasites offices? So we can see for REAL how hard they work, and the underhanded deals they make?? Good enough for US, it's dam*ed well good enough for them!

I could be wrong but i think it's Englad that has all their public streets in their higher traffic areas video taped. and have ppl watching live on the other end. and in the "real world" big brother is always watching. So IMO you will be surrounded by cameras for the rest of your life in public. use to not be that way but it is now. scary, huh?

Cameras are bad news. I agree with you that they have no place in schools in these numbers as it is spying and an overt invasion of privacy.

MsSr, there are a lot of cameras out in the public, too! At stores they watch us, in parking lots they trail us, and on our highways and on some streets they peep our every move.

I am glad to be moving away from the country for awhile to get some real freedom again.

there are a lot more cameras in the real world than there could ever be in high school. i can understand cameras in schools, though, because you can't trust a lot of students to do the right thing, nor can you trust a lot of teachers for the matter!

there's a limit of course, there always is. or at least should be...but it's limitless in the real world.

Well from my information there will be put about 100 cameras in each of the highschools alone. This is just outrageous to me. I understand that there are traffic cameras and such but to alot of students school is our second home, even our job. We spend over 8 hours here everyday. I know that there have been situations before but I have never heard of anything big enough (in Irving) to need over a 100 cameras in one school. If any of ya'll have ever been to MacArthur or have had a child attend, you probably know just how small it is.

I just wish they respected the students privacy a little more.

The misconception is that the cameras are there to protect us or our children from harm. The fact is they are there to protect the owners of the cameras from lawsuits and to monitor/protect their property from vandalism.

The cameras in public are more invasive, MsSr and here is why. In your school, the students are well aware of them. But in public, who knows where they are? I ran a red light once a couple of years ago and when I viewed the pics of my car going through it, I was stunned. I knew I was guilty, but this camera captured my speed, direction and had a close up of the car. Lord only knows if it also has audio and driver compartment shots. I am against cameras save for at very necessary locations.

Students should be afforded the opportunity to be free from restrictive cameras. None only is it bad today but it sets a terrible precedent for when they become adults. I can hear a teen thirty years from now, "Heck, when we were teens we had cameras and they didn't do us much harm."

Again, I say give the students their absolute privacy in school and keep cameras only where security is absolutely necessary, such as at the entrance and exits.

Thank you very much Scotty. I completely agree, especially in schools were there hasn't been very many dangerous pranks or criminal activities.

If you aren't doing anything wrong, you don't have anything to hide. I don't see anything wrong with having cameras in public schools and in public places.

Sally, it is NOT the fact that we have something to hide it is just flat out an invasion of privacy.

period.

I agree MsSr. Sally, I changed my pants once in a Wal-Mart lot because I received a text about a job and had to buy some clothes. As I was looking nervously around pulling them up, I looked up and saw a sign that read: Cameras monitor this parking lot. I thought to myself, Oh, great! I am with MsSr on this because whether you're doing something right or not gives no one the higher ground to explore your privacy.

anyone ever read Orwell's 1984????......Sal...I know you have to have read it or at least heard of it.....the argument you are using, the old "hey if ya aint got nothing to hide...you aint gotta worry"......was part of the same argument used in the book.....I realize that it is fiction, but our society appears to be inching closer and closer to an Orwellian state....

Ted, that fiction from Orwell's "1984," was written in 1949. With amazing accuracy it spoke of what we are now living through, with even more inroads into our privacy coming.

1984 is a great novel.

Scotty, I'd like to see outtakes from that video. *bats eyelashes*

As long as the footage is used for the purposes it was intended, I don't see a problem. When you get into questionable areas like the PATRIOT ACT, which is a direct invasion of privacy, then you have to put your foot down.

As long as our gov't doesn't abuse it, the pros would out-weigh the cons.

Pros vs cons.. outcome.. better to have them, just in case than to not have them and wish you did.
Privacy is only available in your own home these days. No where else. You cannot change pants in a parking lot and be upset because your privacy has been invaded... You just aired your privacy.
On the other hand, the couple making out on the subway- for people to view it is one thing- for people to show many many others (i.e. YouTube or Myspace) That to me is invasion of privacy.
So after all is said, basically- If you want privacy, you'll have to stay home.. get used to it

a lot of criminal activity in schools could take place in the restrooms.....a lot of theft from retail establishments occurs in dressing rooms and restroom stalls.....so technically it would be just fine to install cameras in those places too......right?....hey if ya aint doin nothing wrong, ya got nothing to worry about right?.....no biggie.....hey as long as we're on a roll here.....where else can we stick a camera???....hmmm.....

I live in Irving and I am a senior at MacArthur High. I'm very opinionated and I like to speak my mind about a lot of things.
