Thanks to a new state law, school districts have the power to require proof of identity from visitors. And one North Texas district is already asking for it.-- FOX 4

Okay, I don't know how long they have known about this but I've been doing it since October. I am enrolled in a program at my school where 3 times a week I go visit 2 elementary kids and then on fridays I help out a teacher in her class at the same school.

I was also enrolled in this last year and last year all we had to do was login to a computer and it took care of our attendence and the times we clocked in and out. I thought thatt this was a legitimate way of watching who went in and out of the school. But I guess not because this year I went back to the same school and was asked to have a state id or drivers liscene so that they could scan it. Luckily I had one and now everytime I walk around the school I have to have my ID tag on with my ID picture and some information on it. To me this is just unnecessary. I know it is mainly for protection of the students. This isn't just at the school I go to it is in all IISD schools. What I don't understand is why the students are forced to have an ID tag. They accepted the program quite a few years ago and just this year did they start to force us to wear the tags with our pictures and information on them.

I've gotten used to it now but it still takes time away from seeing our kids at the schools. I completely understand if it is an adult that the school is not familiar with and would like to keep tabs on. But why the students that they welcomed in?

Let me hear it.

I think it has to do with the fact that so many families vary in the members. No longer can one assume that if this week it was ok for Dad to pick up the child, then it will still be ok next week. And then with all the horrible stories you hear regarding estranged spouses, etc. I'm sure that the schools have just decided to go that extra step to ensure the children's safety.

True June, which is why I think it's okay for them to still ask many adults to show id and possibly even have a check up about the parents or gaurdians rights every once in awhile. I agree with you on that. My only thing is that I'm just a teenager who is wanting to spend time with one of their students, which they invited me to do, and the attendence people in the office recognize me when I come in. I'd rather spend the, up to 5 minutes of time, with my friends at the school.

Predators are not just adults. A quick search will find you plenty of violations by teens and even children. Gangs also play a big part in monitoring who is on campuses.

In DISD all staff members wear badges in addition to students, and they are none by sight to all other staff members. Just because the office staff knows you, doesn't mean all the staff does. All staff should always speak to people without badges on within the school halls. Parents shouldn't even be in the halls without very specific reasons during school hours. They should wait in the office until their child comes down.

If you need a very recent example of how trusting to much can result in bad situtions...check out the ex-student, well-known magician who kidnapped a student. And that guy is what a mere 4 years your elder, some people do bad things at all ages.

though it is inconvenient, having small kids in school, i'm for showing id to get past the school office. mac, when it's your children they are protecting your views may change on the 5 minutes it takes to keep them safe

Terrellmom, I don't mean to be rude, and I'm not directing this just to you, but I really with people would stop saying, oh when your older, when you get out of highschool, when you have your own kids... things will change.

I realize things will change, I expect them to, I am merely offering my opinion now. I understand the dangers now and Orphan does make good points, I was just saying that when I'm barely at the school for 30 minutes now, every minutes counts.

and we are merely offering our opinion in return. i understand your point about the time but it doesn't change the fact that we need our children safe...whatever that takes. i'm sorry it wastes your time as the school is lucky to have you there to volunteer and give these kids a good role model. the magician that kidnapped that girl was also known to the school officials and look what happened.

I am all for any type of I.D. and even metal detectors at school doors.
A few minutes of time, is worth the safety of a child.

If all that is wasted is 5 minutes to keep my child safe- Im all for it. 5 minutes is well worth it- hell 30 minutes is- if that means my daughter and her classmates will be protected from a predator .

I had a daughter that graduated from MAC last year.....they never remembered me...through 4 years.....I was always given the third degree whenever I picked her up for orthodontist appts....."I need to see your license"...."your umm...not on the list" (I was)..."you umm....have a different last name" (yes I do)....they even went so far once as to pull my girl out of class and ask her..."is this your father?"....I never complained because I knew it was all in the name of safety....we were late for a couple of the appts. though....

I know for a FACT, that NO SCHOOL in DISD is suposed to allow any student to enter the schools in the morning without their picture ID. It has to be worn around their necks at all times and no vistors should be allowed in the school without first going to the office. Maybe the schools you are talking about just got alittle relaxed in letting it by because they "know" your or your face, but that is no excuse to break policy.

Luvmykid, You must have misunderstood. They have never broken policy, I always where my ID tag when I go to see my kids. It is merely an annoyance that I was expressing.

I understand all of the comments about safety and such, but I don't know what ya'll are talking about with the magician, maybe I missed out on that in the news. I believe in protecting all the kids at the schools I just think things have gone a little far. What I hate the most about the new protection policies and things is that parents and such are not supposed to come have lunch with their children anymore. When I was in elementary school I loved it when I got to have a visitor at lunch. Now I can't even visit my sisters. :(

I could be wrong because of your name, but I figured you were in Irving (MacArthur) not DISD...luvmykid may of confused my comments about DISD with your situation.

No, I know that she was in Irving, but, what I was trying to say is that most all of the schools in all districts have the same policies in order regarding visitors at schools.

I understand what you mean about the lunch thing, Mac. I was not allowed to go have lunch with my son anymore, either.
I took my son out of public school and placed him in private school. We still have to report to the office before seeing our son, but, we can have lunch with him.
I am sorry that you can no longer do that with your sisters.

(the thing about the magician is in an earlier post where this man that attended the lewisville school as a student, became a magician and would do performances at the same school and since he was "well known" they allowed him to freely walk around the school. He forged a young girls parents name to a note and picked her up and took her to his place and sexually assaulted her then took her back to the school. Look it up to learn more. It will surprise you.)

luvmykids-many districts require ID's in secondary schools not elementary schools. (just FYI since you kept saying all schools)

"..... most all of the schools in all districts have the same policies in order regarding visitors at schools."

Policies in order regarding visitors..........

That is what I said. And, this is true. All schools do have a policy. Elementary thru high school.

I live in Irving and I am a senior at MacArthur High. I'm very opinionated and I like to speak my mind about a lot of things.
