Apparently there is a test system happening in Georgia right now where potential dropouts are being paid 8 dollars an hour to go to study hall.

Since when are people bribing kids to go to school?

I honestly think this will increase the number of potential dropouts because more kids are going to think, oh it's okay if I want to drop out, they'll just pay me to stay.

This is the completely wrong approach to handling dropouts. And this is coming from a person still in highschool and hardly loving it haha.

What does everyone else think about this new test system going on??

Kids have been bribed to go to school since the beginning of school in one form or another. If you get good grades you can get, a scholarship, a new _____, your drivers license. Its just that this time its the govt. doing th bribing not your parents. Or how about the If you have perfect attendance you get to have a pizza party.

Yeah but when did money come into everything. I'm sorry but this is only going to increase the number of potential dropouts and increase spending on those who don't deserve it.

All the things you just described where bribes to do good things. This is a bribe to basically give up on education.

to pay a kid to go to school is wrong in my opinion. maybe the govt should pay the parents 8 an hour to get off their duff and take their kids to school LOL

I agree - that's STUPID, beyond stupid. Kids have parents, who need to parents and make their little darings DO what is right, which is study and make good moral, ethical choices. If they can't do they, they're not much more than chickens in a barnyard. LOL

hey, are you in school? Slacking off?? LOL >:(

Kids should realize it's their DUTY and their PRIVILEGE to go to school. Paying them is bizarre.

I agree, mac. You asked this: Since when are people bribing kids to go to school? The answer is when liberals took over the NEA.

AND......just because you happen to be paying them to stay there.....that's no guarantee that their grades or attitude will improve....I feel this does indeed set a dangerous precedent MAC....when the students see this in action they will ALL be lining up for the big payout (can ya blame them?)....doing poorly on purpose, threatening to drop out etc.....8 bucks an hour is pretty good money just for dragging your butt to school....bad idea...

I hadn't seen the report but what an idiotic thing to do. If the drop outs don't want to be in school and learn, put their butts to work doing hard labor, it makes school look really really nice when you have to get up and work for what you have. This is what is wrong with America's youth today.... they are given everything and don't have to work for anything... therefore when they do finally grow up, the expect everything!

I am sure this idea was created by the same folks who award unwed mothers more and more assistance for every child they conceive without any accountability for their actions or realization of the drain they are on society, the additional benefits encourages them to repeat irresponsible behavior which in turn is passed down to their illegitimate children who repeat the process- meanwhile, society continues to pay because bleeding hearts would rather coddle these sorts of people rather than force them to take responsibility for their own actions.

2tickets you said- "This is what is wrong with America's youth today.... they are given everything and don't have to work for anything... therefore when they do finally grow up, the expect everything!"

In this situation how can you blame teenagers? True if this test continues more will see what is happening and then lesser themselves, but it's all being started by the government, the adults. If they didn't come up with this ridiculous idea there wouldn't be anymore teenagers wanting to drop out. It would stay at it's constant and no more teenagers would lesser themselves.

And Chardoney, yes I do sometimes check my blog at school, like I am now, but it is only during free time :-P.

Scotty,

You do know that this was advocated by Newt Gingrich and is privately funded. Its not a 'liberal' plan or part of the NEA. Just thought you should know.

Great post, Mac.

The whole "throw money at it and it will be ok" thing makes me crazy! I have been broke and hardly making ends meet all my life and both my boys graduated and are on their own two feet making their own way in the world. I think that teenagers should be held accountable for their actions, they are old enough to think for themselves and to choose between right and wrong. We all come to crossroads in our lives and regardless of background make our own decisions which road we take. Sadly, many choose the path of least resistence and the effects of such choices are plain in our society. Sheltering children from the consequences of their actions is a huge mistake and a great disservice.

This is a dumb idea. It will never work. You are right. It will encourage more dropouts. Georgia has the third largest dropout rate in the country, as well as being close to the lowest SAT scores in the country. They have some serious problems in Georgia.

I have heard it all now!!! What's next ...we pay rapist for not raping, thieves for not stealing, etc????
The world needs ditch diggers too, if they want to drop out LET THEM they will discover there is a cold cruel world just waiting for them!

Amen Conservative....give them a heapin serving of "real life" with a side of "work for what you get" on the side a large "society owes you nothing" for a drink.

You spurred my interest, so I looked it up on some of my various blogs. Here's the source of the thing and the conclusion of the study is that financial incentives JUST DON'T WORK.
