A radical Baptist church in Kansas known for picketing the funerals of soldiers who perished in Iraq said it intends to protest Heath Ledger's memorial service with signs claiming the actor died and is in Hell because he played a gay character in “Brokeback Mountain.”

Shirley Phelps-Roper of the Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka said that she and other members will picket Ledger’s United States memorial services, not those held in his native Australia.

“You cannot live in defiance of God,” she said. “He got on that big screen with a big, fat message: God is a liar and it’s OK to be gay.”

A press release circulated by the church references Leviticus 18:22 in the Bible, which states that “thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination.”

“Heath Ledger is now in Hell, and has begun serving his eternal sentence there,” the Westboro Baptist announcement says.

Started 1955, the Topeka, Kan.-based church has conducted over 34,000 peaceful demonstrations opposing the homosexual lifestyle, according to their Web site, GodHatesFags.com.

The organization runs various Web sites, including GodHatesAmerica.com and others that condemn lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people, Muslims, Roman Catholics and Jews as well as certain nationalities, according to Wikipedia.

Actor Heath Ledger Dead at 28 The Southern Poverty Law Center classifies the church as a hate group and the organization is monitored by the Anti-Defamation League, according to its Wikipedia entry.

Phelps-Roper said the church group will also be picketing the Academy Awards this year.

Both the printed release and Phelps-Roper’s verbal diatribe about Ledger were rife with homophobic slurs. She said that those who call her and other members of Westboro Baptist Church bigots must also think God is a bigot.

“God hates [...],” she said. “The wrath of God has been revealed before the eyes of this nation with the death of Heath Ledger. … This nation worships the dead almost as much as they worship their filthy sex acts. America is doomed.”

Sometimes I am literally ashamed of humankind. It was a role he played, he was an amazing actor. I doubt anyone else could have done it as well as he did. People are so hateful it's ridiculous and it really makes me rethink my views on our society.

WOW MAC! You hit the nail on the head chick! I will tell you right now, that all the research that you do and all the time you put into your projects, the school must be very proud of you. As for the church that hates everything, well that just goes to show that they don't have a life and everyone is going to go to hell if you aren't Christian. I've always heard that Catholics think that way... APEARENTLY NOT! Soon MAC, you will be in the "real world" and the things you see and don't like now, when you get out here, the things that the school hides from you on a daily basis will make you literally sick to your stomach. I graduated in '02 from Mac Arthur HS. Home of the Cardinals! I am going to tell you right now, that the the teachers there, do a wonderful job of protecting every student there from this hateful, bigot and sad sad world we all know as "God's Green Earth"...not God's any more, and that is just sad. I absolutly love your blogs chick! Take care MAC and don't get "Senioritis" too soon sweety! This girl did and barley made it, but I made it! You can too! Be good!

If you are not a believer in Jesus Christ, have accepted him as your Lord and saviour, and do not get saved by him, by baptism, or simple confession of mouth, and ask Him into your heart, through confession, and repentence, and knowingly commit abominations and defiances of His laws and decrees, thats correct, you face going to hell. Dont be a homosexual, and there will be nothing to worry about, Nived is a neive fool that probably thinks if your a nice person you will not go to hell and its simply not so....life is cruel, and God is love...but God is also the Father of ALL things, and a good Father punishes His children...you break the rules, you pay the price. If you dont care, He is a gentleman too. He will not go where He is not invited, but when the music is done and the party is over, BE PREPARED TO PAY THE PIPER AND ITS PRICE.

I'm sorry putonyourbigpants, but I AM a Christian... and sorry but I thought God had faith in people or am I wrong.. isn't that why he sent his son to die for us? to ultimatly save us and forgive us for our sins?

Bible-beating Christians sometimes drive me crazy, and I'm being completly honest. I'm tired of people thinking that if someone loves someone else of the same gender that God doesn't love them. We are all his children. He loves us. If he created us then why do we chose to do things like this? He forgives us. Nived is not NAIVE, God did not create us to not sin, to not be us, to not live our lives. Just because someone does something that is not "seen fit through the eyes of others" does not mean that they will go to Hell. If so, practically everyone would go to hell, even the radicals.

Oh and to NIVED, I know that at school the surroundings do try to protect the students from real life and things like that, but I don't really consider myself to be a part of highschool and I haven't really since the beginning of this year. I found out through a few good teachers that opened my eyes to the world that there are things that happen everyday in the real world that I should prepare myself for and since then I have been. Thanks for the thing about Senoritis though, it is getting tempting haha!

Well said MAC! I heart you chick! PUTON, you need to read MAC's words and realize that maybe you are the neive one. Ever think of that? I am not a fool and I am not neive! I was Chrisened, Baptised, and Blessed! I am even more so blessed now than I was back then. I was in the Army! I went to Chapel every Sunday and confessed to my Company Chaplin every Sunday. I am a Holy Woman who is on God's Green Earth only to serve the Lord. Mac is right! We would all be in hell if it was like that! Don't ever call any one a fool or even a neive fool. Maybe you are the neive fool! Ever think of that? What you need to do is consult your concience and consult in the Lord and find yourself and BACK OFF of me. I pray on a daily basis and go to Church on the Sundays when I am off of work. Its not every Sunday I get to go to church BUT I STILL PRAY! Carry on Mac, You're fine chick! Keep your head up! Us girls will be fine with our beliefs and I for one am with you, Sister! Pray and find yourself PUTON! You need the Lord in your life and in your heart and soal. Think before you speak or type anything you will regret later. I am trying to be nice. I hope I'm getting through to you.

Mac, the people here bash me for realising how much of a hellhole this society has turned into. Their main argument is "well if you don't like it then change it!"

WELL DONE!:) I have never had a problem with the " ALMIGHTY ", but his supposed fan club acting falsely in " HIS " name drives me crazy!!

Brother there is LOTS you can do!:) But a little advice if you don't mind, nobody will listen to your concerns truthful or not, if your spitting in their face all the time.

You educate yourself with the truth, and refuse to be subjugated, PERIOD! That is why many of us HAVE HAD IT! And are standing up, sorry we didn't do it sooner!:( But if we don't all STAND NOW, young and old a like, those coming behind us and our country DON'T HAVE A PRAYER!!! Your anger is JUTIFIED, I to am angry! Mine is because we have let our people turn in to sheeppople, controlled and manipulated by fear mongering!

We no longer have Public Servants due to the fact we let self serving bigots manipulate our once BEST system in the world IN TO A LIE! How anybody on earth can believe those who can't even get in to this election process, are some how represented by those who have manipulated it in to a disgrace, and they are ONLY ones allowed to be in it, IS BEYOND ME!

You brought up a very sad truth, that being if you don't like it change it! WE DID CHANGE IT! Sept. a new law went in to effect that states if a person is caught with less than 2 ounces of pot the officer can write a ticket! BUT " BOTH " Dallas and Tarrant counties supposed Public Servants " REFUSE " to use it!! They claim it sends the wrong message! "" WE THE TAX PAYERS DIDN'T ASK THEIR PERMISSION! We sent them a WRITTEN MESSAGE in the form of a LAW, yet these self serving bigoted political parasites think they can pick and choose which laws they will follow! Who are these people (who picket funerals) to think they are so "chosen" that they can defile anyone's funeral?!?! I know it's done. I know it's sick. I know it's disgusting. The beauty of this country (so far) is that we have total rights to believe the way we want, worship the way we want even if that includes not worshipping, and to have a funeral in peace. My God would never sanction such demonstrations. Puton is telling you exactly what most preachers teach from the Bible, Mac, but that doesn't mean those people have the moral right to picket funerals. I look at people like that as animals. Am I a Christian? Yep. Do I go to church? Yep. Am I active in the church? I'm the church pianist - I will take no pay because my music is a gift from God and as such is freely shared. Do I think these who picket funerals are Christian? No, I don't. Would I defend homosexuality? No. Do I think homosexuals will go to Hell? I don't know. I don't know who will and won't go to Hell, but I do know that if these "church" people who picket funerals go to Heaven, there may be many of us reconsidering our options since to me they seem more crazy than Christian.

Thanks tellermom and Nived for the compliments, like I have said before, I just want to stand up for things other people won't.

To Mizgoofus, I somewhat disagree with the thing about how pastors teach that kind of stuff, if I understood that correctly. My pastor has never had a hateful word about others having to deal with things like homosexuality. I know some do, and it's a shame because they influence everyone from the extremely young to the old and it's pastors like that who lead to things like my blog.

And to Orion, yes I know a lot of people will say if you don't like it change it and things like that, but I actually think we can change things. I usually don't like to have pessimistic views on these kinds of things. I think that if we really try we can change things if need be and it doesn't have to be just one person. I doubt that there is ever a single person that doesn't have anyone else to back them up with the same beliefs and values.

The kooks at Westboro are far worse than Koresh and his bunch. They are not indicative of true Christian faith, belief and doctrine(s).

Although I am cognizant of their fanatical blatherings, I put as much stock in them as I do the Koran's teachings on love.

No LDS I dont agree with what that wak job church is doing, but I very much understand the platform for wanting to. Its not right, and I dont condone such behavior....Sam Kennison said in a stand up once, talking about spousal abuse, and abuse..." I dont condone beatings, I dont agree with it, I UNDERSTAN IT ! I KNOW WHAT MAKES MR. HAND INTO MR. FIST! But I dont support it" Same applies to what this church is doing.

I don't know how the mother's of these fallen soldiers kept themselves from clawing out the eyeballs of these protesters. I am not a violent person, but I think that under those circumstances such a thing would push me beyond my limits. We are all plagued by sin and to God all sin is abominable. Thus, the shedding of Christ's Blood to cleanse us of our sins. We are only saved through His Grace and our faith in Him, He states plainly that our deeds, both good and bad are like filthy rags. No one will gain entrance into His Kingdom through deeds, only by His Grace. Truth remains Truth regardless of interpretation.
