I don't know if many of you heard of the story of the cyclist who was killed in Richardson at the intersection of Greenville Ave. and Arapaho.

A teenager, age not released, driving a pickup clipped the cyclists bike from behind because he said he was blinded by the sun.  Yet, he was crossing an intersection.  And, this cyclist was hit hard enough to throw him into the pickups windshield and shatter his helmet to shreds.  Yes, shreds.  Killing him instantly.

Well, this gentleman, cyclist, father, uncle and son, was friend of ours.  He and his family own an establishment that has been in Richardson for years and brings lots of people together.

He rode his bike every single morning to work.  Never had an issue.

Now, he is dead.

Police are not sure that there will be any charges filed.  The scene and time of day are being investigated as well as talking to witnesses.

His back tire was all mangled up and his helmet torn to pieces and the trucks windshield shows a major sign of where Anthony's head hit.

What are your thoughts?

What do you think of the reason given for "clipping" this cyclist.  Our friend?

Please........leave comments.

I am sorry for the pain you, your family, and your friends are going through right now. I also feel for this young man that hit your friend. He'll have to live with this for the rest of his life.

I have been a bike rider for years but I will NOT ride my bike during heavy traffic hours. People are in a hurry, the sun is always a factor (sunrsie or sunset), and a bike is the last thing these big metal objects are looking for.

If you ride, be smart, be careful, and be on the look out. Remember, you're the little guy. Everything else is bigger and faster.

I feel awful for your loss.
Bike riders have to really be on the lookout at all times.
We all take a risk everytime we get out on the road wheather it be on a bike or in a car.

Understand both sides.

I guess maybe because of the fact that I knew him, I find it harder to try and figure out how this young man hit him from behind and so hard.

I don't know.......

I guess it will turn out to be a matter of witness statements because some say the sun was an issue and others say no. I know that speed was one of them listed.

It's just so sad.

I'm sorry for your loss. I can't tell you how many times I have seen cyclists not being aware of their surroundings and drivers not being aware of the cyclists.

I saw some guy riding down the part of Sandy Lake Road with no lights on it with only the dimly flashing red light on the back of his bike dressed in dark clothes. If I had been drinking or maybe reached down to turn the dial I would have killed him.

I'm sure there are three sides to this story.

It's terrible anytime someone looses their life, and my heart goes out to family, friends ect. of this man. But also, if this was an accident, this teen has to live with it the rest of his/her life. Everyone on the road must always be aware.

my sincere condolences on the loss of your friend........

from your description of the accident scene....

"clipped" doesn't sound like an appropriate word for what happened........not with that amount of damage

I've encountered cyclists who kind of took advantage of the ease with which they can zip in and out of traffic.....

but more often I've seen drivers that are literally paying NO attention whatsoever to the road in front of them.........much less anyone else around them.......

chances are......he simply was not paying enough attention.....and because of that....someone is dead.....

again.........I am sorry Luv.......

a true shame..........

i do know the sun can play a factor in many accidents. just think about next time you are driving and the sun is in your eyes. it's difficult to see. sometimes it is just an accident. as horrible as it is, there's not always someone to blame for them. sometimes the victim is to blame (i'm not saying it in this case) but part of our grief is to blame and find someone responsible. had there been reckless driving from the driver, or alcohol etc. then yes, i could see him being completely responsible. but cyclists need to be pro active in their safety as well.
i'm sorry for your loss. it's very sad.

My daughter is a cyclist and she has had to endure some really nasty behavior from car drivers...they cuss...give her the finger and tell her she has no right being on the road...she is a very careful/considerate rider but the motorists must remember to "share the road"...am very sorry to hear about your friend...I think the fact the driver that "clipped" the cyclist was a teenager... figures very heavily in the equation...inexperienced to be sure and easily distracted..so very sad..my sincere condolences

Well, one of the factors is said that the driver was going 51 mph when he hit the bike.

The teen said he could not see infront of him because the sun was in his eyes.

That is the reason for the amount of damage.

He was going eleven miles over the speed limit.
(according to investigation on the impact)

Anthony did not know what hit him. This is a route he took everyday to work. Every morning and every evening back.

I understand that this teen will have to live with this grief.....but, I hope he learns that he needs to be more cautious if he can't see because something is blinding him or blocking his view or whatever.

A family man is now dead.

A wife without a husband.
Two children without a dad.
A mother and father without a child.
Siblings without a brother.
And several nieces, grand nieces and nephews.

Rest in peace Anthony.

My heart goes out to the Mungoilis'. May God give you the peace that you need in your hearts at this time of pain and sorrow for your loss.

I am sorry for your loss, but I have also seen bicyclist run red lights, ignore traffic around them and ride side by side during heavy traffic. There is such a thing as common sense, and truly, I know that intersection and I think it is possible that the light was in the kid's eyes. It's a sad situation, but like it or not, a cyclist will always lose to a car, just like a car will never beat a train. A policeman once told me that accidents never happen because of one bad decision, it is usually a series of bad decisions. I don't know whether riding at dusk or dawn or when visibility is low is ever a good idea, and I've seen lots of people riding bikes after dark with no lights. I would agree that speed was probably a factor. Nobody wins in these situations. That kid will carry this with him the rest of his life.

luv, i'd not heard this story but i'm sorry for you loss and the loss his family and friends feel.

i can see where the sun could make a bike hard to see. it's so heartbreaking. but accidents happen...and this seems like one. my heart also goes out to the person who hit the bike rider...think of the guilt and grief that person has to live with the rest of his life.

I had a young lady on a bike cut right in front of me yesterday. I narrowly avoided hitting her. She never looked before cutting in front of me.

I've found that cyclists are much like regular DFW drivers, a lot aren't paying full attention.

Luv, what a sad loss for you. I know that intersection well. Dependent on the direction travelled and the time of the day, it is entirely possible to be blinded by the sun there.

Sad story indeed.

Luv - "Well, one of the factors is said that the driver was going 51 mph when he hit the bike. The teen said he could not see infront of him because the sun was in his eyes."

I've heard this so many times. The guy can't see because of the sun yet he's speeding. Goes to show what kind of drivers there are out there today. One more reason to NOT be on a bike during rush hour.

Hang in there Luv. We're all pulling for you.

Thanks for the understanding, phrankw.

I seriously feel bad that this child will have to live with this for the rest of his life. I would hate for it to happen to my son.

But, I would also have to tell him that we pay the price for out mistakes...

In this case......... speeding.

BTW....I found out that Anthony was killed instantly because his kneck broke due to hitting the windshield so hard.
That is also how his helmet got so shattered.

The kid was speeding, too? Uh-oh. That's bordering on criminal in Texas, for real.

Yes, he was speeding.

51 mph was the determination after investigation of damage to bike and how hard he had to have hit the windshield to shatter it that way and tear the helmet to shreds.
