Our son is a 13 year old middle school student and we live just down the road from where this happened so it has really hit close to home. Our family has been praying for this boy since we heard about his abduction. I had my son watch the news this morning so he could understand why we are so protective. We've always taught our children (we have 3) what they should do if they are approached by a stranger but this just goes to show how quickly something like this can happen. Hopefully, the next time he asks us if he can walk to his friend's house since it's "less than a mile away" he'll understand when we once again say No.

Does anyone know yet if they are looking for volunteers for a search? We would like to help this family in their search for their son.

I saw this on the Amber alert. Are they sure he was abducted or do they just think he was? I haven't heard the entire story yet. Why did it take so long to get a search going? Not being nasty or anything but if my son had not come home from school at the time he was suppose to I was on the phone to the bus company asking where he was. I am scared for the child and the parents. I hope everything turns out ok.

Watching the news now. Sounds like he's not the type of kid to run away. They said they are keeping the search to just the police dept right now. you might want to call and ask. So many sick people in this world, makes me angry.

I feel physically ill over this and so ANGRY! I wish there was something I could do to help this boy and his family. I'm at work and can't keep up with the news 100% so if you hear anything, I'd appreciate a heads-up. I already informed my boss that if they're looking for volunteers I'm going.

I'll try to keep you up-dated if anything comes on the news i'll blog back to you. Please do the same for us as you are so close to the incident you could probably give more info then the news has time for.

Absolutely. I just called the police department and although they are not looking for volunteers at this time, they are taking names and numbers of anyone willing. They are planning to call if/when they need people. They said as of right now they are relying on official support. God willing they won't need volunteers because they'll find him safe and sound . . . keep praying!

I agree Brite. I don't care if the kid went to the neighbors house if they are missing they are missing put out an Amber alert immediately.

I agree but there is some confusion regarding this alert. Although the news said they didn't put one out until the case met all the criteria (8:30 a.m.) - an alert went out via text message last night. Are there possibly different levels of the alert? Regardless, if one of my children were missing I would want that to be one of the first things done. I can't tell you how many small white trucks I stared at on the way to work this morning - the alerts do get people looking.

I feel for the family and hope Ben will be returned unharmed. I have known his parents for many years and I will continue to pray for the family.

I know I'm a stranger to the family but my heart truly goes out to them. If you know of ANYTHING my family and I can do for them, please let me know. I would like to donate flyers to hand out and/or post but don't know where to go to make the offer so if it's possible for you to pass it along, it would be appreciated.

Lovemykids...

Do you or your children know this teen? What about potential threats in the area. Keep us posted on what's happening in the area and what people are saying. You never know what tips might help no matter how small.

Was he a gamer ie: Runescape or other on-line games where the kids communicate. Are there Meth-Labs in the area which can attract odd types. What are the kids his age saying...Sometimes kids are afraid to say too much when a case is getting this much attention.

I'm with you lovemykids. I have some leftover vacation days from last year that I can use if they will let volunteers like us help. I have a 4-wheel drive truck and an ATV. I'd love nothing more than to be able to help search for the boy. I have two grown-up girls myself and I know that this type of thing is every parents worst nightmare!

We don't know them but it's so close it's scary for all of us. They haven't said anything about those being avenues they're looking into and in fact all we've heard is that he's a great kid. It's Franklin County so OF COURSE there are meth labs around - so many that they did a special on A&E about our area - I hope he didn't run into one of those people. At this point we'll keep praying and plan to offer our services the minute they say they need volunteers or anything else. God Bless Ben and his family.

If I hear of anything the family needs or help searching I will pass it along. Ben is not into anything weird. My son has known him for years and he is a good, responsible kid.

VBallR -

If you'd like to volunteer, you can call the Franklin County Sheriffs office at 636-583-2567. They are taking names and numbers and plan to call people when/if they need them. Hopefully Ben will be home safe soon and they won't need to use those numbers. If they do, I would imagine the more the better.

As a parent my heart goes out to the parents and family. I cannot imagine how terrifying this must be for them. I think that I would go crazy if my kids disappeared.
As a citizen, I would like to see them loosen the requirements for an Amber alert. How far could this person have driven by now? I know that it is 13 hours to Denver Colorado from St Louis. As a parent and a citizen, I would much rather hear Oops, we found them safe then wait. I always keep my eyes open when I hear about a missing child and know that many others do as well. An oops Amber Alert should be both understandable and forgiveable to anyone with a heart.

I want to know why the boy was made to walk a mile from the bus stop to his home everyday. My daughter's bus lets her off at the end of my drive way, and I am there when she gets on and off the bus. A mile walk to home is too far, the bus driver has no clue what happens after he gets off the bus. My daughter's driver wont pull away unless she see's me outside or I open the door and acknowledge her. Whats up with that long walk home?

Here's the criteria for an Amber Alert and a Saraa Alert. You may not like it, but these are the rules that law enforcement must follow before an alert is issued. It prevents the alert from becoming common-place. If they used it everytime a child walked a way from his mom in the mall, (and I'm not saying Ben walked away by any means) it lessens the effectiveness. Then, people will stop paying attention to it. Just go to the front page of myFOXstl.com and on the big story, there's a link that says, "Amber Alert: Learn More." The webteam put that together a few months back.

In rural areas like ours, there are a lot of private roads and/or roads a bus just can't get down to turn around so they drop the child off at the end of the road. My children are picked up and dropped off right in front of the house but when I was in school, we lived on a private road and I had to walk 1.5 miles to and from the bus stop every day. I hated it but nothing has changed. The buses still have to be able to turn around.

Ms_Vera, I know that there are standards etc., I would just like to see them loosened a little. In this case while no one witnessed him actually being pulled into the truck, he was there then the truck was and then he wasn't anymore. Sure a kid walking away at the mall would be different, but common sense should be able to dictate in cases like this. There was a very high probability that he was kidnapped. The police should be allowed more leeway in deciding to issue and alert. The 12+ hours since he disappeared gives the perpatrator time to do what they want and ties the hands of law enforcement and the community. If an Amber Alert had been issued yesterday afternoon, some trucker or other citizen might have been aware and noticed something. If this child does not turn up alive and safe, that is a tragedy that can never be undone. I cannot think of many things more horrible than losing your child and never knowing what happened to them. These types of crimes should always involve a life sentence.

Married, mother of 3. I work part time while my kids are in school so I can be there to get them on and off the bus. I haven't always been able to do this and they spent a few years in after school care so these last 2 years have been nice.
