As I grow in my profession, I look around and I realize that things are becoming clearer to me everyday. I read news stories about the things happening in the world, the things people say... and I have come to this conclusion.

No matter how much you want to use diplomacy and avoid aggression, agression will occur.  Not only is this true for the Nation-state, it also holds true for the individual. In accordance with that revelation it seems imperative, at least to me, that one should maintain a certain level of preparedness for that event.

For the individual, that means maintaining one self in a manner that will allow him/her to ward off such aggression.  For the nation-state, that means maintaining a warrior class and allowing them...nay, enabling them to carry on their business of preparing to best engage any enemy that may or may not present itself.

Hear! Hear!

I am in total agreement with this post, Leonidas!

As far as the "individual", you are correct in saying that no matter how much you use diplomacy and avoid aggression, aggression will occur anyway. Whether the aggression is of your own making, or the aggression is forced upon to you and makes you react...it STILL..no matter WHAT...rears its UGLY head!

So, we all ( or we all SHOULD) maintain that level of preparedness for the event to take place, because IT WILL occur...soon enough.

Maintaining oneself in a manner that will allow him/her to ward off such aggression, doesn't always prove positive, does it? Some people and/or situations and circumstances can literally force you to be just as aggressive. They thrive on strife and confusion.

Leonidas, you are wise beyond your years.

Great post!

"Leonidas, you are wise beyond your years."

I'll second that!

And remember there are several million of us still around who served in that "warrior class" role who haven't forgotten the lessons taught, which only goes to underscore your point. You can also rest assured that a portion of our citizenry will never understand, nor will they accept that rational.

God's Speed, Marine.

I think you are right. And that is because not all societies are like ours. Some cultures do not respect the concept of honor or honesty. Instead they embrace the concepts of winning at all costs and ignoring treaties. The only way to counter such tactics is to make it clear to them that negotiation is the only way to survive. The Japanese were ready to fight to the last man, woman and child until Truman ordered the bomb to be dropped. That action avoided a projected loss of a million men on the beaches. I guess we haven't made our point, thanks to the benchwarmers and secondguessers in the EU and UN.

Way to go, Soldier. Stand up and do your duty. Your orders won't change: Keep your fellow troops safe through your own vigilance.

Your mission may change, but not yet.

TruBlu, that was the best analysis I have seen on these blogs. Will we Americans embrace such a concept and brea from the media mold? I hope so...Not holding my breath.
