'The Perfect Stranger' By Charles Krauthammer

WASHINGTON -- Barack Obama is an immensely talented man whose
talents have been largely devoted to crafting, and chronicling, his
own life. Not things. Not ideas. Not institutions. But himself.

Nothing wrong or even terribly odd about that, except that he is
laying claim to the job of crafting the coming history of the United
States . A leap of such audacity is odd. The air of unease at the
Democratic convention this week was not just a result of the Clinton
psychodrama. The deeper anxiety was that the party was nominating a
man of many gifts but precious few accomplishments -- bearing even
 fewer witnesses.

When John Kerry was introduced at his convention four years ago, an
honor guard of a dozen mates from his Vietnam days surrounded him
on the podium attesting to his character and readiness to lead. Such
personal testimonials are the norm. The roster of fellow soldiers or
fellow senators who could from personal experience vouch for
John
McCain is rather long. At a less partisan date in the calendar, that
roster might even include Democrats Russ Feingold and Edward Kennedy,
with whom John McCain has worked to fashion important legislation.

Eerily missing at the Democratic convention this year were people of
stature who were seriously involved at some point in Obama's life
standing up to say: 'I know Barack Obama. I've been with Barack Obama.
We've toiled/endured together. You can trust him. I do.'

Hillary Clinton could have said something like that. She and Obama
had, after all, engaged in a historic, utterly compelling contest for
the nomination. During her convention speech, you kept waiting for her
to offer just one line of testimony: I have come to know this man, to
admire this man, to see his character, his courage, his wisdom, his
 judgment. Whatever. Anything.

Instead, nothing. She of course endorsed him. But the endorsement was
entirely programmatic: We're all Democrats. He's a Democrat. He
believes what you believe. So we must elect him -- I am currently
unavailable -- to get Democratic things done. God bless America

Clinton 's withholding the, 'I've come to know this man' was
vindictive and supremely self-serving -- but jarring, too, because you
realize that if she didn't do it, no one else would. Not because of
any inherent deficiency in Obama's character. But simply as a
reflection of a young life with a biography remarkably thin by the
 standard of presidential candidates.

Who was there to speak about the real Barack Obama? His wife. She
could tell you about Barack the father, the husband, the family man
in a winning and perfectly sincere way. But that only takes you so
far. It doesn't take you to the public man, the national leader.

Who is to testify to that? Hillary's husband on night three did aver
that Obama is 'ready to lead.' However, he offered not a shred of
evidence, let alone personal experience with Obama. And although he
pulled it off charmingly, everyone knew that, having been suggesting
precisely the opposite for months, he meant not a word of it.

Obama's vice presidential selection, Joe Biden, naturally advertised
his patron's virtues, such as the fact that he had 'reached across
party lines to ... keep nuclear weapons out of the hands of
terrorists.' But securing loose nukes is as bipartisan as motherhood
and as uncontroversial as apple pie. The measure was so minimal that
it passed by voice vote and received near zero media coverage.

Thought experiment. Assume John McCain had retired from politics.
Would he have testified to Obama's political courage in reaching
across the aisle to work with him on ethics reform, a collaboration
Obama boasted about in the Saddleback debate? 'In fact ,' reports the
Annenberg Political Fact Check, 'the two worked together for barely a
week, after which McCain accused Obama of 'partisan posturing'' --
and launched a volcanic missive charging him with double cross.

So where are the colleagues? The buddies? The political or spiritual
soul mates? His most important spiritual adviser and mentor was
Jeremiah Wright. But he's out. Then there's William Ayers, with whom
he served on a board. He's out. Where are the others?

The oddity of this convention is that its central figure is the
ultimate self-made man, a dazzling mysterious Gatsby. The palpable
apprehension is that the anointed is a stranger -- a deeply engaging,
elegant, brilliant stranger with whom the Democrats had a torrid
affair. Having slowly woken up, they see the ring and wonder who
 exactly they married last night.

I care about the real issues, and on that basis,
Obama wins hands down.

Later in life, Ayers worked with Chicago's
Mayor Daley to better schools for children.
Ayers was 1 of 3 who wrote the Chicago Annenberg
Challenge proposal which granted $49.2 million
for public school reform. Now-days, Ayers is a
highly respected professor at the University of
Illinois.

Even McCain has recently described Obama as a
"decent family man, citizen", and went on to say
that if Obama is elected as president, that people
would have nothing to fear... that he and Obama
simply disagree on policies. In other words,
he admitted that all the mud we see slung back
and forth, is nothing more than politics as usual.

Main thing I disagree with McCain about is economics.
McCain did admit awhile back, that economics
are not his strong point. I think they're important.

Trickle down economics stopped working when
companies stopped allowing some of the profits to
trickle down to their employees, and into the
companies to grow jobs here, for our people.
We can't take any more Bush-McCain economics.

The fact that Obama has zero experience at running ANYTHING has been totally ignored by the liberal media. Yet he is running for president! Even his running mate Joe Biden said this is not the time for on the job training when referring to Obama.

You are right that no one has given him any sort of recommendation for the most important job in this nation.

A man with no experience, and no references, is applying for a demanding, important position.

Who would hire him? Not me. Great post leasheryn!

Thank you for your comments. The Presidency is a diverse job and experience & ability is necessary to get the job done. Economics is not the only issue on the agenda although among the very top of the list.
We also have to remember, very seriously, that the President isn't making singular decisions. Much of the decision making is done in congress and in this our most recent congress is a failure and much of the reason why in recent years we have descend to where we are now.
What we need is a new congress and a President with the experience and ability to lead this country.

Yes, Nancy and her cronies have thumbed thier nose at the American public.

While a vote was demanded, she saw fit to say no, and turned off the lights/media. She then embarked on a tour to promote her new book!

She should be impeached!

I believe she will, as the American people will see her for who she is.

She is the devil himself, and I hope she enjoys her glory now, as it will be gone after the election.

Americans are not as blind and stupid as she thinks they are.

At least not the majority, and that is what counts.

It is also improtant for the president to show
good judgement.

Bush (with McCain's support) started a war in Iran
instead of going after the terrorists who attacked
our country on 9/11. Meanwhile, the terrorists
gained strength in Afganistan & Pakistan.
It was bad judgement to start the war in Iran.

Also, it is important for our president to understand economics.

Economics is one of Obama's strong subjects, where as
McCain has admitted that he knows nothing about economics.

Most of the lies and highly exajerated gargage
people find on extremist sites and copy to blogs
and in their email campaigns, comes from a guy
named Andy Martin, who was denied admission to
the Illinois bar after a psychiatric finding of:

"moderately severe character defect manifested
by well-documented ideation with a paranoid flavor
and a grandiose character."

How many Democrats voted for the war Cynho?

I love how you libs place the blame squarely on Bush, and now McCain.

Bush had full support from many of your favorites, including Hillary, Kerry, and many others! Truth is a pesky thing for you!

Obama did not vote for the war, but voted against the surge that he still will not admit is working! He is no commander in chief, and under his leadership we will wave a white flag to the world.

Wake up!

Speaking of garbage, I love how you constantly post links to Obama's website, and related websites, like that is the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.

Speaking of garbage.

He may have YOU brainwashed/programmed, but fortunately you are in the minority.

The silent majority will shock the world on November 4th.

You are exactly right, DayFrank, Pelosi has to be impeached. It's been all downhill since the libs took over congress and they have to be booted out. They are like little children who are caught with their hands in the cookie jar and instead of standing up and taking their punishment, they seek to blame the other guy.
BTW CynPro, I didn't understand that we are at war with IRAN. When did that happen?

Yes! As soon as the Congress was taken over by the Democrats, the economy started its freefall!
Pelosi and her gang of liars promised to lower gas prices as soon as they got in.
Well, gas went from $2.50 a gallon to $4.00 a gallon! And when Republicans and Democrats alike DEMANDED a vote to do something about it, she said no!

That will NOT be forgotten anytime soon!

CynHo, I noticed how you love to rag on spelling on other blogs, so tell me.
What does "exajerated" mean? LOL!

leasheryn read my blog
Oct 15, 2008 | 5:39 PM

I'll answer you're question, DayFrank. "Exajerated" is what happens everytime Pelosi's mouth moves...

And you're right, the economy has gone south since the Dems have taken over Congress. The majority of what's going on has more to do with the Dems in Congress than the Bush presidency.
Congress is supposed to work with the President in times of crisis, not against him as Pelosi has done and has been determined to do. In taking this negative attitude, it is Pelosi who has driven this nation to the point of recession.
BTW I have a new nickname for Pelosi: "Porky Pig".

DaytonaFrank read my blog view my photos

Good one! She does love the pork barrel, and she IS a pig! LMAO!!

Consider that her new nickname:

Nancy "Porky Pig" Pelosi!

Didn't she say when she turned off the lights:

Da dee da dee da dee dats all folks! ROF!!!!

leasheryn read my blog

"Da dee da dee da dee dats all folks"

You don't know how much I would love to see "Porky Pig" say that and then ride off into the sunset never to be seen or heard from again.

There should be a new campaign slogan:
A vote for Obama means a big blank check for Pelosi.

If you think we're in recession now, just wait until Porky Pig gets Obama under her thumb. It's be all our depression. And you know exactly what's going to happen. Obama will only be the minion to Pelosi (Boss Hogg).

Boss Hogg! LMAO!!! You are on a roll! Excellent!

So true though sadly. If Obama gets in, and Porky is still there, the porkage will be flowing out of Congress faster than any swine farm!

Even Jimmy Dean will be in awe!

"Even Jimmy Dean will be in awe!"

You're on a roll too, DayFrank. Jimmy Dean, that's hilarous!! Maybe I should say you're on a sausage roll?! LOL

But you really have to think hard about Pelosi and Obama. Obama's is only a Jr. Senator and Pelosi is speaker. She has seniority over Obama therefore if he were Pres. (shudder, shudder), she could have enough control to make him her puppet. Boss Hogg, indeed...with Obama as her Enis (or is that Anis?)

I like a good conversation on nearly all subjects and, although I have opinions, am willing to listen to all sides of a topic. I believe in listening and learning so your opinions are always necessary to me.
