Change is coming. That seems to be all the Presidential candidates want to talk about these days. We have been listening to the two of them promise change throughout most of the summer and fall but can we really expect to see any changes starting to take place this upcoming January when either John McCain or Barack Obama takes office or will it just be business as usual up in DC once all this hoop-la is over?

Change means that things will be different; that life with either improve or perhaps take a down turn in the near future. But the truth is, we never really know what the future holds or what is around the next corner. There is always something different to come and the next thing might be better or it might be worse; who knows?

Can one man, or one woman, make that much of a difference in the future that the world will change for the good? Does one person ever make such a great impact that they can make such changes to the way we live our day-by-day lives? It seems this is very unlikely to happen and, if it is possible, such an impact is hardly something we can expect to happen within a day or a month or even within the course of a year. This is, of course not something we can realistically expect to happen in a place like Washington, DC where business seems to take place in the same way, time and time again.

No, if we wish for change and if we expect change, it is not the politicians in Washington who are going to make it happen. They don’t want change; they want to continue to live their comfortable lives in the same way as they always have. If we expect change, we will be sadly disappointed by yet another load of empty promises brandied about by a couple of butt kissers who want your vote.

If we want change, it is the good people of the United States of America who are going to have to stand up and make these changes happen and happen for their own benefit. In case anyone has forgotten, this is the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave. We are a brave, strong people who hold the power and the will to make changes and to improve our own lives.

Many of our ancestors came to this land because they were dissatisfied with life in the land of their births. They left the old homeland and the property of their fathers and their father’s fathers in order to find their dreams in a newly developing land which offered the freedom and the ability to stand upon their own two feet and to create a life for themselves out of a bare wilderness. They came as pilgrims and adventurers; they came to build cities and towns and farms. They became frontiers people and pioneers who faced grave dangers in order to build up this country, to make it a vast nation peopled by a diverse population.

When they didn’t like what life was handing them, they pushed on; they changed their lives to accommodate their needs and their desires. They never allowed their situation to hold them back or to keep them from their dreams. These people were strong and brave and lived by their own abilities and their own intelligence.

If we want change, it is up to us to make it. It is time for each and every one of us to take stock of our lives, to decide what is right for us and what is wrong and what has to be done to make improvements. If we don’t like what’s going on in our lives, we are the ones to decide what the next move is. If we don’t like the way we are treated in the workplace, it is up to us to decide whether we want to stay there or not. If we don’t like the way our children are being raised, it is up to us to change the way we are doing it. If we don’t like how banks are doing business or how the retailers are doing business, we don’t do business with them; we find another way or find another place.

As Americans, we don’t expect help from anyone and we don’t ask for anyone’s help. We help ourselves and stop being dependant on government or the boss or the banks for help that we can ill-afford. As Americans, we don’t whine and cry and moan that we can’t. We are Americans and no matter what is around the next bend, we can face it and we can conquer it. WE CAN DO IT, should be our motto.

This is not only the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave, it is a place of Independence. Afterall, this country was based on independence and freedom but if we allow ourselves to be dependent on government and bosses and banks, the fundamentals of our great country are lost to one and all.

Well said. I think the only change we will see in the near future is going from bad to worse.

The bad thing is that the politicians count on people being fundamentally dumb and they are when it comes to politics. These bills all must go through Congress - hey if you don't like it add an earmark and tie it up forever or add and its rejected. Obama can't change anything. McCain can't change anything. Too many hands in the pie. We can't change many things however - people lose their entire savings(Enron); people lose everything - serious illness(seen what a one week hospital stay costs?); Americans are living in tents and we are rebuilding other nations. It's like the Planet of the Apes - it's a madhouse - a madhouse!!!!!!!!

Thank you, Vit. It's going to get a whole lot worse before it gets better again.
It's my feeling that there are going to have to be drastic lifestyle changes for Americans before anything can get back to normal again. We feed too much into corporate and financial greed and to this we have to reverse direction.
Vit, it is my thought that we have to learn to do without the things that are not entirely necessary to day to day life. Sure it's nice to have a few luxuries in life but sometimes it's the simple things that give the most pleasure. Friendship and a nice spirit and a little kindness to someone else goes much further than a flashy car or a flat screen TV.
There's nothing wrong with getting back to basics and living a simple life.

I agree. And earmarks must be stopped. Make them illegal. Do you notice how many folks are now saying "politicians" instead of a particular party? We have met the enemy, and they are us.

I agree with you 100% Lea. Our ancestors are probably rolling over in their graves to see what we have let become of the country they worked so hard to build. They left their precious homelands to strike out and find the freedom they were being denied. Yet, here we are again bowing down to the same tyrannical power only this time the word is greed.

The only difference is that we have done this to ourselves, it was not inflicted upon us. At some point we began to believe that material wealth was worth more than anything else, including our integrity.

Yes, I agree it is time for radical change, but how do you do that with people who have forgotten what values our country was originally based upon, nor possess any of the skills of our ancestors. Tenacity to fight for what you believe, compassion for others, and honor in knowing that at the end of the day you did your very best for not just yourself but for all and you did it without cheating, lying or stealing.

Today, these words are not defined as they were then. Instead tenacity means, I want what I want and I will have it at any cost, but I don't want to work for it.

Compassion today is defined as only caring for ourselves, or those who are the same as us, possess the same toys as us or look the same as us, nor do I want to help those who don't have it.

Honor, well is there any left?

Sure there is a handful of us in every corner of this country who understand and do possess the spirit of our ancestors. But how do the few stand up and change the many? Have we waited too long to do anything? An

Vit, the answer to ridding ourselves of earmarks is: LINE ITEM VETO! Just get rid of the el-crappo line by line and nip it in the bud.
MO, people are indeed fools...

rlynne, thank you kindly for your comments and I agree, in turn, with all that you have said.
We pound it into them in the same way advertisers pound the need to buy their products. That may sound a little strange but it seems the more you talk about something and the more you continue to say this is the way it is and this is the way it's supposed to be, people will start to follow. We make them believe that, if they don't act with integrity and tenacity, they are uncool.

The retailers and car dealers and cell phone companies, etc, advertise that you have to have their products otherwise you are not hip or you are not cool and everyone runs out and buys into this idea. This is what has gotten us into so much trouble. Many people can't afford these things and run into debt trying to achieve a goal set up by retailers and marketers who are selling a product.
If we take a stand and send a message to retailers that we can live without their product, we can get away from greed and the have to haves.
It starts with one person and moves onto to others. Just give out the message that being greedy is the ultimate in "uncool" and give out another message that being kind to others is "cool" and we're on the road to a better life.

Yes, Change is "definitely" coming. I believe that the only change you are going to see in the White house is the color, or lack there of, of the face of the next president. If there is a single person in this country, or any other country, that believes one person can change the world, he is a real dreamer. I do believe that Obama is THE dreamer. According to him, he has a solution for all of mankinds problems from global warming, to the financial crisis and even WORLD peace, even though a world of leaders have yet to find the way. This country has gone through over 230 years of being a great nation with both good and bad presidents and has still survived. However, like every great nation (Rome, England, etc) has risen, only to fall. This is where we are heading if we elect a person with no experience, of running anything, into the White House. Yes, things are bound to get worse before they get better. I believe that the only hope we, as Americans, have is to pray to God (and not to Obama) that we shall survive for another 200 plus years. Remember what happen on 9-11 with inexperienced pilots in the air? I, personally would rather fly with a pilot that knows how to fly than one that has been un-tested. To many of us, this could have been an omen as to our future. Be careful of what you wish for, you may get it. Remember the re-election of G.W. Bush?

we have slowly became people who depend too much on the government, its what was desired by the government. Makes it easier to control a population that way. If we have obama as president I see the America we once knew being erased from history. We will become working clogs in the machine and not independent forgers of a nation like the folks on the prairie were. Thats why the left in this country hate the small town folks, why they think someone like palin coming from a small town and smaller college are dumb and insiginificant. They just dont understand the idependent spirit. Folks if you dont want this to happen, do something inspirational, go door to door in your neighborhood and talk to people.

Change I don't see any stinking change we still have corrupt Chicago politicians paying off people to win elections.
If this is change then please give me 4 more years of George Bush.
I would rather be broke then corrupt.

What this country is becoming reminds me of the Orwell book, 1984. And yes, we are definitely going in that direction. There are cameras going up all over the place which means we are going to be watched even more closely than ever before. We are taking way too much medication which has drastic side effects and are making us a bunch of slow thinkers. And I can't say that all this GPS is really doing us any good. The fact of the matter is, Big Brother is creeping up on us and as long as we are carrying around cell phones with GPS, he is going to be right on our hip. Can you imagine a government that is going to know our every move at every moment of every day?
The more and more we scream for governmental help and governmental support, the closer we are going to get to having a very real Big Brother right in our midst.
Is this the change we are all clammering for?
NO, we have to go back to being independent thinkers and independent doers just like our forefathers were. We have to take back our country in order for it to survive and to be a place where we want to live.
Change happens with each and everyone of us and it comes from talking to others and being an example of what we want for our country.
Let's not ask for the wrong kind of change; let's create our own change for the better!!

good post leasheryn.....I think we were supposed to have a government "for the people and by the people." It seems to be turning a little because we the people have had it to good and have gotten lax. It's time we get off our duffs and let the beaurocrats know who the rel bosses are. I can't believe how many people I run in to who don't vote, or can't vote because of their affiliation with illegal activities. It's amazing the amount of idiots we are spawning in this country. After 9-11 Pres. Bush's ratings were among the highest of any president because he took the reigns and got things moving. Over the next few years we have let the dems turn things around to make it look like everything he did was wrong so that they may have a chance to regain the white house. Now, enter Mr. Indecision. Folks we could be in real trouble. He may go to a high priority meeting and vote "present".

Thank you postie42. You really nailed it with your comment. We have to get our act together and start acting like citizens. This includes understanding what is going on around us and being active in understanding our government.
In a democracy, it is the citizens who are the bosses. When we vote, we are hiring someone to be to our representive in Washington. They, who think they are so high and mighty, are our employees and are there to work for us.
It's Pelosi and her cronies who are responsibe for the problems we are facing and it is she who has to GO. We cannot progress while she is busy playing games with our tax dollars and refuting every opportunity we have to move forward.
