Does anyone know if these people are checked for their papers? Why do they have to yell in Spanish? If you don't speak the language, learn it or go home!

AURORA - It's hardly a secret. If you live near Colfax Avenue and Dayton, you have likely seen it. A car drives by a group of about 10 men. Someone in the car yells something, typically in Spanish, and then a few of the men get in the car.
Harold Lasso, policy director for El Centro Humanitario, says the going rate for the day-laborers is usually more than $10 an hour, but it can get up to $20 an hour for specialized work.

"These are people who mostly know how to work the land. They come from farming communities," said Lasso.

On Tuesday, Tim Joyce with the Aurora City Attorney's Office said, in no uncertain terms, the site cannot continue to operate this way.

"Eight years of complaints at that location indicates there is a problem," he told a meeting at a nearby library filled with workers and advocates for the workers. "The activity at that location needs to stop now."

During the meeting, a man from El Salvador told Joyce and others with the city that he has come to the location for five years. He said, in Spanish, that the site represents a chance for a "dignified job for dignified pay."

The City Attorney's Office says the site is simply too close to another employment office and because of that, the location puts it at odds with city code.

Advocates of the workers say if the city closes that site down, another one will pop up at another location.

It is still not clear just how the city may try to close the site, or if it will even happen at all. By Tuesday afternoon, cars were still pulling up and people were still getting in.

Why doesn't this guy just HIRE someone for the $10 - $20 an hour? Is it the insurance? The taxes? Maybe the people taking the jobs shouldn't be in question as much as the people OBVIOUSLY avoiding doing ligitement business.

A lot of companies have cleaned up their act, so to speak, since this debate hit full throttle. The ones that HAVEN'T, are simply asking to be smacked down. I will NOT do business with ANY company who has suspected illegals on the "payroll", and I tell them so, and why...as well as EVERYONE I know. If they stand to lose their business over this, they DESERVE to go under. I have NO sympathy whatsoever...They've been warned, they've seen the writing on the wall.

Exellent question P2BC!!!!! Why don't they just hire someone? The article said that it's mostly land work and these people come from farming communites. Sounds a little suspicious to me..... If they're illgal, why isn't the local goverment doing something about it? Why ar ethey just standing by and letting it happen?

Id88-What are the local guys going to do? That cop from the other post said it-They stop 'em, arrest 'em, and the Feds let 'em go...The local guys feel like they're fighting a losing battle...It's BS, IMO!

I don't understand why this one is different than the other employment agencies. Most of them, you have to provide ID and then you sit in the office until the truck comes to pick everyone up. If you're paid daily or weekely, you go to one of those check cashing places and cash your day's (or week's) paycheck. I wonder if these guys are paid cash (under tha table). This one sounds as though they just wait out front without going in.... I don't get it!

That's what I'm saying ID... I'm thinking they probably get paid CASH..And I'm also sure it's to avoid being a ligitament company or employer.. THAT person should be put out of business!

Maybe it's a designated meeting place for these guys. Kinda like the Home Depot stuff they were pulling. They must move it every so often to avoid being caught?

No, it's a legitiment employment agency on Colfax. They want it shut down because it's way too busy and it's also right next door to another agency. The crowds of men waiting to be picked for the day are too big for the area.

I agree P2BC!! The companies that hire them should be investigated. Why aren't the police checking on them? Like that cop said in the other blog, probably because they have no where to put them. The Feds won't back the local law enforcement and take the illegals and send them home!

Id88 my dear:) this might be a no win situation. So we might as well have some fun with these illegals. Lets say you have someone you dislike or maybe an ex that is a real jerk. In the mornig when that person leaves to go to work You go and get about 10 of these illegals and bring them back to the jerks house and you tell them that you want the roof taken off the house and you will be back around 3:00 with a 100 dollars for each of them. Of course if you want to get the full effect you go about 2 blocks down the road and watch these undocumented messcans tear that roof off. We might as well use them for something. Revenge is always fun. Also while your watching, huckleberrys are always good to snack on.
