Please excuse my ignorance here.  I'm still not exactly clear on how this whole story came about on Spitzer.  Can someone fill me in, please?  It's not the "breaking news" that I need information on - I know the story.  It's the "how it came about" that I need.  I'm sure one or more of our bloggers can fill me in.  Thanks in advance for your kind assistance.

It's pretty straightforward. He made transfers of amounts of money over $10,000 which must be reported. The Feds were going over the reported transfers and his name kept popping up.

The Feds through that there was the possibility that he was being blackmailed and investigated further. They found that he was using the funds to pay off high-priced callgirls. Now, why should they care?

Well, there is the matter about interstate transportation of individuals for immoral purposes (Mann Act - Federal) and then there's a matter about the reporting of the payments to the IRS (He should have given the call-girl a 1099 so that she could be taxed on the income).

Amazing! Thanks so much for filling me in. I just wasn't sure how it all came to light.

We move money around like this all the time and it's not illegal. It's very suspicious when you have money coming in at increments of $10,000 or more. The bank was initially "nosey".

Chicken: You can move money around in your accounts. The bank just made the decision to inform the Treasury Department because it was happening often, he's a Governor, and they thought it was suspicious.

The one item of interest was they investigated if he was being blackmailed since those amounts of cash were leaving his account.

After it's said and done - he's busted! Remember, any bank can be nosey and contact higher ups on large transfers - beware. Keep all paper trails when doing so or you will be tied up for a long time in the numbers game.

Mutatis: Yeah, never thought of the true value the Governor got out of spending $5,000. In the following months he'll soon learn that these hookers were cheap compared to his divorce settelment.

The FBI with ordinary court approved search and surveillance warrents was investigateing money laundry of prostitution ring. His phone and bank records were connected to the investigation. I am writeing this because I heard an idiot say he wouldn't have got caught if Bush wasn't wire tapping everyone. Had nothing to do with homeland security database.

There was no "flag" on the governor until the bank noticed these amounts changing hands. They initiated the contact/surveillance with the Treasury Dept. At that time the Treasury Dept got the FBI involved. Normally, banks mainly in this area do not monitor large amounts of transfers. If they see a large amount coming in on a repetitive basis then they will question it. So far, UMB is quite sufficient.

Kdubken: Agree on the non-homeland issue and Bush's wiretapping is irrelevant here.

rhrealestate: I have been wondering that myself. Of course, I have no idea what a "normal" rate is.

Thank goodness that he was caught.

I hope his wife and children will always realize that it had nothing to do with them.

He was a selfish, greedy, ugly piece of pond scum.

He paid a very high price for sex. After this is all completed he'll obviously get divorced and in the future he needs to have an open line of communications with his significant other. I am wondering if he has done worse than this though because this is either a minor offense or none at all.

So, let me see if I have the story straight:
1. Spitzer's banks notied the Treasury Dept. due to the large sums of money in and out of his account (or was it just "out" of his account).
2. The Treasury Dept. notified the FBI.
3. So, the FBI actually brought this story to light, right?
Somebody told me it was the prostitute that told on the whole thing. See how stories can become convaluted?

But why is hiring a prostitute against the law? Or, was the Governor using state funds for his personal shananigans? Have we heard the whole story yet? That remains to be seen, I suppose.

When Spitzer resigned the other day, I did see that live on TV. His wife looked frazzled to me, standing there and probably not wanting to be standing there. I noticed the circles under her eyes (probably from all the stress). I feel very badly for his wife and three daughters. They will never to able to live it down.

This guy is a Superdelegate for Hillary. He also prosecuted call girl agencies. He was a big bully, that nobody liked. Who cares....one less jerk working for our government.

This just goes to show you that another guy cheated AND got caught. (Oh, I can hear the guys who blog now!)

jimbobbob, what is the difference between a delegate and a superdelegate or are they one in the same?

I mentioned this blog to my mother and SHE follows the news to the utmost. She was not sure how this all came about either and so she's glad that I cleared it up for her.

On a separate note, I have also heard that perhaps Spitzer was using some of the State's money as opposed to his own money.

Has anyone else heard that? I'm guessing that would be the real crime here.

Any bets on whether Silda will leave her man???

A delegate votes as a representation of how his or her district voted. A Superdelegate's vote counts the same, but they can vote for whoever they want.

Speedy - "Chicken: You can move money around in your accounts. The bank just made the decision to inform the Treasury Department because it was happening often, he's a Governor, and they thought it was suspicious."

Nope - while its true you can move money around all you want, the LAW says that transactions >$10K MUST be reported. The bank complied and the regulatory agencies that oversee the law thought that because of the frequency of transactions that he might be in the process of being blackmailed. What they found was what ensued.

If I were Spitzer's wife I'd be pxxxxx regarding the fact that he used so much of the money that belonged to her and his family. It sounds like Spitzer used a LOT of money for this prostitution ring. That money could have well been spent on his wife and daughters. All I can say is I hope he used protection with his little flings.

So the question still remains.....Was he using Tax Payers money for his personal entertainment or not?

SwanSong, this question still remains to be answered. I think they're probably checking into that. The facts will come out.

Yeah, if he hadn't got caught, he'd still be doing it!(literally) LOL

Scum of the earth! Prosecute others for doing the same thing he's doing! Beyond hypocrite!

It's time for a major shake-down in this government! If they're not robbing us of our jobs, land, and freedom, they're all busy being creeps and freaks!
