In perhaps the most embarassing performance by the media in a major presidential debate in years, ABC News hosts Charles Gibson and George Stephanopoulos focused mainly on trivial issues as Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama faced off in Philadelphia. They, and their network, should hang their collective heads in shame.

Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the health care and mortgage crises, the overall state of the economy and dozens of other pressing issues had to wait for their moments in the sun as Obama was pressed to explain his recent "bitter" gaffe and relationship with Rev. Wright (seemingly a dead issue) and not wearing a flag pin -- while Clinton had to answer again for her Bosnia trip exaggerations.

Then it was back to Obama to defend his slim association with a former 60's radical -- a question that came out of right-wing talk radio and Sean Hannity on TV, but was delivered by former Bill Clinton aide Stephanopoulos. This approach led to a claim that Clinton's husband pardoned two other 60's radicals. And so on. The travesty continued.

More time was spent on all of this than segments on getting out of Iraq and keeping people from losing their homes and -- you name it. Gibson only got excited complaining that someone might raise his capital gains tax. Yet neither candidate had the courage to ask the moderators to turn to those far more important issues. Talking heads on other networks followed up by not pressing that point either. The crowd booed Gibson near the end. Why didn't every other responsible journalist on TV?

The New York Times said they "thought the questions were excellent." They gave them an "A." An "A" can stand for many things......

I enjoy the news about this Clinton/Obama riff. It clearly shows the American people how far the liberal mandate of egalitarianism has come and, moreover, how incessant are the cries and pleas from both of the "minority" participants as to who is better. Liberal politics has created this fiasco so it is good to see it coming to roost in the party that birthed it.

You will never hear them ask those questions. One reason is because they have no answers for them that would make any sense; the Americans would really see how dumb these people really are.
The left wing media will always protect these two morons. If you want a real debate, let Bill O’Reilly and Sean Hannity ask them the questions. Then let Gibson and Stephanopoules ask McCain their questions. Now that I would love to see.

I too would love to see that! I am weary of our cowardly media asking fluff questions! Ask the REAL questions we want answers to.

DITTO's! This was one of the first honest debate's for Dems we've ever seen. Kudo's to Gibson for asking some REAL QUESTIONS for a change!
Funny to see the Dems squeal about how unfair it was. Dems are getting a taste of what it's like to be treated like a Republican! lol

I agree with you. It was a hit job on Obama and Clinton. Usually right wing radio hacks and Fox Noise do this kind of nutty stuff. I was surprized to see come out of ABC. Reports are surfacing now that nutty Hannity passed on questions to Gibson and Stephonopolus.
All these negative attacks you hear around are initiated by right wing radio hacks. That's the main reason why I don't believe or trust any of the negatives against the Dem candidates. And I also think that's the main reason why they are not sticking to the candidates for long.

Obama was simply whining because he finally had to field tough questions.

If you want answers regarding the candidates avowed positions or policy, visit their puff-piece websites. What we had last night was a debate - no punches pulled by the moderators for either candidate. If every news organization had conducted their debates with real questions like last night, the Democrats might have a nominee by now.

I'm sharing the info. from the Huffington Post, I thought it was a good article. It was contributed by Greg Mitchell. I like good dialogue but comments not having anything to do with the post will be deleted.

Ok, my apologies.

What I don't understand is WHY reporters don't ask the tough questions. I would have no qualms about it whatsoever.

I can't answer that, it's almost like the whole thing was staged. And the questions seemed to be concerning issues that I thought were old news. I don't get the "beating the dead horse" thing. I find it all very confusing, and wonder sometimes who's pulling the strings.

George Soros is pulling the majority of the strings.

I ask tough questions and have no regard as to position or stature.

I agree that this "debate" did not have enough of the right questions. I don't care about that petty nonsense, I want to see them debate on issues and policies.

Gurkha I agree, but from what I have seen of Bill O'Reilly he rarely lets anyone actually answer through all his yelling and interuptions.

jteam, I understand why you deleted my comment. I may have been a bit over the top in my reference toward you regarding the original author.

As for the article, I stand by my original characterization above. We know Obama and Clinton have such a slim difference policy-wise that either will do as expected if elected president. Where the focus should be now is on character. We happen to know so much about Clinton that even when she lies we just nod our head and go on. When we find out something about Obama, we know so little about him that it becomes big news. Had ABC not used the time they had to delve into some of the items that came to light in recent weeks, they would have been irresponsible.

That said, 45 minutes does seem excessive for a 90 minute forum.

A dead issue? You have to be kidding, right? You’re talking about a man who wants to be president. He should be push left, right and upside down about why he has associated himself with people like that. We are talking about a bigot preacher, and a person who bombed our on government, and who has said he is not sorry for it and wish he could have done more.
If you don’t think this is a serious issue about someone who wants to be president of the Unity States, I hope you don’t vote.
Would you be friends with Ted Bundy if he was still alive, and after he said I’m not sorry for killing all them women and wish I had killed more?

Go figure that ABC and the Mickey Mouse managers of ABC would allow such public brainwashing over the airwaves! Disney can't whitewash their hands about this one! Before Disney bought the ABC network, they had owned a station in Los Angeles...KHJ Channel 9 which they changed to KCAL 9, and they would run pro-Disney stories until you could vomit! Then when the other stations in Los Angeles would come across some truthful and not so flattering news about anything to do with Disney, KCAL would not air a thing in their newscasts from 8 PM TO 10 PM. Talk about how biased Disney is...yet when something bad happened to their competition, they would flog it to death on air! I have no respect for ABC, since they're with Disney, though it's a bit toned down with ABC as a network...thankfully! But when Disney was an independent...they had no restraints with their propaganda. Ironically, it was Fox 11 in Los Angeles that embarrassed and exposed Disney's heap of garbage! Will I trust ABC NEWS? NO WAY!

Not much to say actually. Just a normal kinda guy. I drive a truck delivering groceries for a major food chain here in the valley. Try to keep educated on local and national events especially those concerning corruption and moral ineptitude by our "elected officials." Very much for protecting our freedoms and rights, always open to new ideas and discussions. I don't identify as Democrat or Republican, and don't like to be labeled as liberal or conservative. Just try to stay responsible and informed as possible.
