My 21 yr old son just called me to tell me about the story he read in the paper about rationing of rice.  He sounded nervous, like he thinks we are all going to go hungry.

I read the article.  It's not about "rationing" it's about stores like Sam's Club and Costco limiting the amount of rice that can be purchased by an individual.  It goes on to say that restraunt owners are clearing the shelves of rice and some cooking oils.

Paranoia can strike fear in the hearts of America.  If people start stock piling, OF COURSE there is going to be short supply on store shelves.

Instead of getting paranoid and stockpiling, Americans should start to think ahead.  Life is NOT always about HERE and NOW.  It's not all gimme gimme, I want it quick and easy.

I plan on canning alot of my vegetables from my garden this year (enough to more than carry us through until NEXT year's harvest time)  Canning is time consuming, but all too often we PAY for the conviences in life and CALL them necessities.  Some people will say canning makes the veggies lose alot of their vitamins.  When you buy a can of corn off the shelf - do you REALLY know what you are getting?

I'm lucky, I live on a small farm.  I have chickens for eggs and goats I plan to milk.  In today's world you have to look out for yourself.  One day we MAY have to stand in long lines for bread.  I would much rather count on the sweat of my brow - rather than the government.

We all need to take a step back.  Alot of people waste money, and then complain we don't have enough.

Gyrojumper,

It looks like we as a society have been taking too many things for granted, haven't we? You're right that many people waste money, then they complain that they don't have enough...I'd like to ask them if they've ever heard of a budget.

My late mother grew up overseas in Northern Japan during World War II; she would often tell us stories of people who would scavenge at night on her family's farm, just so they could survive. My father was in a camp in Utah during World War II; he remembered how some of the military soldiers would take government beef that was meant for the people in the camp, and then sell it on the black market; meantime the people got tripes until the culprit would get transferred to another camp. The things my folks went through taught me to watch my budget.

We all have plenty to learn, don't we?

hdrider,

Explain your comment, would like to know what you believe is happening...

I believe the Government is working with the oil companies and other compaines to get us to not waste, buy better cars, buy food that last longer, conserve energy.
If you mean that they are working on a One world order, what would be wrong with that, If it stops all the wars in this world, then I'm all for it.
People have to stop freaking out about everything the news says and just conserve.

Too many generations have passed for most people to remember the hard times of the Depression. People would stand in line for hours to get a loaf of bread or an apple. My mother, to this day, still buys "reduced for quick sale" items, and never wastes a leftover, even though she can afford to buy anything, because she remembers her parents going through the Depression.
We waste so much food in this country - it is disgusting! The food thrown away in restaurants alone, would feed a 3rd world country. I always take home all leftovers from eating out. If I don't eat it, it goes to pets, or outside to the birds. (But, we usually eat it all!)
Sadly, it would take a great food shortage to get Americans to really appreciate the abundance of food we serve on our tables every day.

@superbrowns:
To answer the question, this is how I am beginning to see the World. We have been acknowledged as the food supplier of the Earth. I am sure you have heard that stated. You, no doubt have seen the starving, suffering people around the World of every race dying of Starvation! Am I right? The Entire Worlds people have enough food, plus more, yet some are dying. Why? We as a Country that spends Billions on Foreign Aid, The UN who had OIL for FOOD among other programs, used the money for Personal gains and profits. We send money to charities, most of which goes in some fat pigs pocket. The Needy are still in need. Does anyone ever get held accountable? NO. We, as a Nation had a Hurricane that in our eyes was every bit as bad as the Tsunami, but the World and this Government didn't care. We gave money again, folks that were Rich before, just got Richer. Did any of the folks get decent help? NO. Now the Dollar is a worthless piece of toilet paper, the Gov. fix, print more money. Wow. Now that gas is closing in on Four bucks a Gallon, we are told to walk, stay home, conserve. Those that tell us this, fly in jets, ride in Limos and own multi-million dollar homes that we pay for. We have more oil in the Ground than we will use in the next two hundred years, along with clean coal. We have Nuclear Energy, yet don't use it. I could keep going, but most say I'm stupid, yet, those same folks _itch about the cost of MILK. Milk is another product associated with the Bio Fuel made from corn. We either eat or drive , you choose, which I believe is what you DID, " If you mean

I don't think anyone is crazy because of their opinion, I do see all this happening, I have never been to other countries but what I hear about them is never good, they have been paying alot more for everything before we have, now it's catching up with us, Americans are wastefull including me and I'm learning how to conserve, cut back on gas by buying a fuel efficient car, change from heating oil to wood pellets, plant a garden and can, buy my meat from local farmers, I'm looking to put some wind turbines in so I can produce my own electricty, I am far from being rich, but if not for the rich I would not be able to afford to do these things, the rich buy it first and drive the cost down for me.
We were asked to conserve years ago and nobody listened, now we are being forced and everyone is crying about it, gas is going up because they know the cars are getting better mpg's,
bio-fuel is not the answer but they will continue to drive the food prices up and I will plant a bigger garden, If you are not rich you have to figure out another way and thats what I'm doing, the Government will not help you they are part of the problem, just look at how they waste money.

GS - "Too many generations have passed for most people to remember the hard times of the Depression. People would stand in line for hours to get a loaf of bread or an apple."

Drey remembers. Yet when he tries to tell America where it`s heading, he is looked upon as relating a fairy tale.

Hydrider - Your` comment is "right on" !

my parents were kids during the depression and have told us many things about it first hand
prices are ridiculous now...on a lot of things...but they will probably just keep going up no matter how much we gripe about it. the best thing to do IS to budget, learn how to stretch a meal, don't be afraid to use leftovers etc.
girlscout i'm like you on the rare occasions that i do go out to eat i always take my leftovers with me...if i don't use it as a "next meal" than it goes to my dogs and the birds outside...between all of us NOTHING is every wasted!
my biggest gripe is that people were talking about electric autos back in the 60s and 70s...they even had models/demos THIRTY years later (and that's a LOT of fuel/polution) we are still NOT driving them! WHY you ask....simple...the BIG guys, the rich oil tycoons, would loose too much money! THEY don't care how our earth suffers, or how we suffer as long as THEIR pockets are FULL!!!

I totally agree with you. While I live in the city now, I hope it's only for a little while more. I have been doing much research on "getting off of the grid" and hope to spend the majority of the remainder of my life there... So to speak...

I am a homemaker. I hope to start breeding goats in the spring. I have 2 alpines, 1 nigerian dwarf, 1 pygmy, and on mix goat. My children are grown, so now my goats are my "kids".
