I was a victim involved when the old Waterman Canyon fires took place 3 years ago. We lost 3 neighbors and several homes. My friend works 2 hours away from her home in/outside San Diego and she was devastated not knowing about her family or being able to contact them by phone for the first day or so, that same friend just lost a family member and is down south for funeral purposes only to find out through family (and I am like family) of this devastation. I live about 20 minutes from Devore and 12 minute from Cal State San Bernardino, which were all evacuated yesterday. I was out of the city on my way home when a neighbor called and gave me the news that everyone was being evacuated. Thank GOD most of us are more prepared than before.  We are on standby evacuation. I know some of this was by a freak of accident, and probably most was done purposely. A letter carrier is still homeless from 3 yrs ago, and the family has just fallen apart. I may be rambling all over the place, but first of all people need to be more cautious of where they flick their cigarettes or just stop smoking (SINCE I DON'T SMOKE), secondly, prosecute those dearly that have committed arson because the tragedy in our lives behind these fires are devasting. You know I heard cruel people say 3 years ago say “OH WELL THEY CAN BUILD AGAIN, or let the insurance pay for it, or most of those people have money, they will be okay.” Well I am here to say it does not matter who you are or what you have, people whether rich poor or middle class ((many) work hard for what they have only for it to be lost in a matter of minutes. I am ticked off and at a lost for words. I already have insomnia so imagine my concern all night as I watch my child sleep and worry about neighbors, family and friends. These fires have destroyed several of celebrities’ homes or dang near it. Maybe we can pass a bill that will severely prosecute such evil doers and create PAPM people against pyro-maniacs. I am only writing now because I have a small opportunity, our belongings are packed and ready to go. I am going to pray for those who have not ever gone through this before, and I am going to especially pray for those of us that are reliving this nightmare. May GOD BLESS YOU ALL.

Hi girls, hope you are and keep well. I have to stay inside with air on as it gives me such a headache to even have a window open, besides, house much dustier than usual now.

Did you hear the press conf from the OC fire? Boy are our chief and legislator Todd Spitzer pissed! Not enough air or ground support for the few crews that have been up for 3 days and the threat of it jumping another canyon will take the fire all the way to Riverside. The Cleveland National Forest to the south east goes all the way past hwy 74 and into camp pendletion. That is basically the whole county. The hotels are packed because of all the people fleeing San Diego.

I have offered my home to family and friends that have been evacuated from here and Santa Clarita/Canyon country, but I may be the next to split!

Brenda, I hope your neck is better. I have the same pain.

I am finally thinking about what is important in my home. FINALLY, it is so stupid to not be prepared for something like this if you live anywhere near open land or take earthquakes seriously. I am a procrastinator at heart and I can't seem to get it together, but I am thinking about it....a start, right?

What can I do today? Get my stuff together. Did it!! Talk to family if I can. Still trying.
Worry about tomorrow? Tomorrow's business. Stay prepared, safe and alert is all I can do now. And say a prayer.

my heart and prayers is out to all the families, I Can not believe someone has a heart so cold enough to do this and sit back and watch. I live in los angeles and the air is bad and i could only imagine what it's like there or for them. I PRAY the person/persons will be brought to justice. It is heart breaking to see and hear of the loss. Some people are [...] and until they go through it they will not understand, we can't hate people for being rich mooving and living where and how they want, we just have to find out how to get rich and move in their area and fine a solution to prevent fires as bad as this one. maybe hire kids in the summer to cut or trim, trees and weeds off the mountains, something has to be done.

it is so frustrating to see the news reports about no resources being available to help you guys out.. in oregon and washington we have 150- 20 person hand crews, 450 engines and 230 tenders all sitting idle and ready!!!! we have even called and offered and was told that we where not needed!

Hello from Oregon!

I want you to know that LOTS of prayers are for you all here in Oregon...I've been through a few wildfires, so know a little of what you are going through. I was also raised in SoCal, so am very empathetic for that reason, too. You WILL get through this!

Big hugs!
Christy

The other day I was on Mulholland Drive behind this arrogant couple in their convertible porsche. All of the sudden, but without any surprise, the driver flings onto the street below his cigarette butt. Embers flew all over the place.

And then they wonder why there are brush fires all over the place?

No it's not due to global warming, or the hot rays of the sun (like some people have state), it's due to man and his ignorant, arrogant attitude. What do people expect when they live within and next to dry canyons?

Next thing you know, here in SoCal we'll be hit by an earthquake, and people will be surprised about it (???????????)

Tedtug:

Great observation! I too get sick of those careless dingdongs who fling their cigarette butts out of their cars, then they scream out loud "Well WHY DID THIS HAPPEN, WHY DID THIS HAPPEN?!!" I've been a lifelong Orange County resident, and the Orange County Fire Authorities go to the elementary schools in the cities in which they contract with for Fire Protection, to teach the 5th graders how to be fire safe. Now, I don't know if L.A. County & City are doing such a thing with the schools in their areas, but I hope this will be a wake up call to them...and to other localities.

Now I know that those who are taking time to read these blogs are reasonably smart, so I'm sure none of you fall in the DING-DONG category.

By the way, I remember the Cowan Heights fire back in 1967 when I was only 4 years old. That was one of the examples the Orange County Fire Authority used to teach us about fire safety back in the early to mid 70s. Many of us who were kids at the time the fire in 1967 broke out remembered how devastating it was. And by the way, you don't have to live in a woodshed area like Malibu or Silverado Canyon to go through a spreading fire. In 1982, I remember a fire in Anaheim which started in the business district off Ball Road & Euclid Street...the flames sent embers to the housing tracts nearby. Many of the homeowners had shake roofs, and lost their homes as a result. That's when the fireproofing law went into effect for California.

I'm (sorry to say) a smoker. I do use a bottle of water for ashes and DEFINATELY butts. I have seen 2 people flicking ashes out the freakin' window in the last two days near OC fires??? (I WISH I HAD A SIREN ON MY CAR!!) I have descriptions in case something arises. I almost followed a jerk in a BMR home today, but didn't. Bad Road Rage memories.

Just get a bottle of water in your car or porch if ya gotta smoke. FBI will be knocking at your door if you don't.

Get a grip!!

I wish to thank all of you for your words of inspirations and prayers. I have found a place out of the city closer to the LA area and consistantly pray for those who are more affected than I. May GOD bless you all, and ONCE again THANK YOU FOR YOUR PRAYERS AND KIND WORDS...

I enjoy singing, reading autobiographies, history and etc, I like writing poems, going to the movies, going on picnics, going to church when I can, and spending quiet & quality time with family and friends, and sometimes cooking, especially around holidays.
