......United Nations "Messenger of Peace"

How cool is that?

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Friday designated actor and activist George Clooney a U.N. "Messenger of Peace."

George Clooney has been campaigning for an end to the war in Darfur.

Mr. Clooney will help promote global awareness of the world body's activities, especially in its far-flung peacekeeping missions.

The actor, who has been campaigning for an end to the 4½-year war in Darfur and humanitarian aid for the millions caught up in the conflict, will become the ninth U.N. peace envoy.

George Clooney joins fellow actor Michael Douglas, Nobel Peace Prize winner Elie Wiesel, primate expert Jane Goodall, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, Israeli conductor Daniel Barenboim, Brazilian author Paulo Coelho, Japanese-American violinist Midori Goto, and Olympic equestrian competitor Princess Haya of Jordan.

WOW. What a man.

There are oil reserves under Darfur.

Our government (were it demonstrating morals) should have stepped up pressure on Sudan's government long ago to stop the genocide. I guess there's no alternative government-in-waiting for us to prop up.

Let's look up which oil interests are competing in southern Sudan and Darfur--that should be enlightening.

ohhh, are you saying that we'll intervene if we can get our hands on the oil, and if not- wont bother helping them at all?
That doesn’t sound right. Moogie you sound like some of my Argentine relatives that I’m upset with. I don’t want to think of our country in that way. I want to believe that our leaders are all beautiful prince and princesses spreading love and cheer throughout the planet, selflessly helping victims without any interest in their natural resources whatsoever. ahhh....if only?
