I've been enjoying the HBO/Playtone production of John Adams. Each part was so carefully crafted that it drew me in and kept me mesmerized through each and every episode. I have always been fascinated by the vision and sacrifice of our so called "Founding Fathers". Through much personal sacrifice they created a nation that has become the shining example of democracy throughout the world. The portrayal of John Adams by actor Paul Giamatti is nothing short of spectacular. His wife Abigail was beautifully portrayed by Laura Linney. Together, they display the kind of power and strength that surely was needed to survive those turbulent times. If ever there was a "power couple" this was it! Separated for years by service to his country Abigail forged ahead with dignity and strength, while John traveled to Philadelphia and eventually to France to build a necessary alliance. I salute the producers of this series and thank them for providing a rare glimpse into that time period. The scenery, costumes and setting were at times, painfully authentic and raw. I was so intrigued by what I was watching that I would spend an additional hour or two on my computer reading about John Adams' life. I went out and bought David McCullough's book and am now reading it. I am grateful for what these men and women did to insure our nation's future. I take pause and look to our current election process and marvel at how fortunate we are to live in this country. Yeah, there are lots of problems but there isn't another place in the world that compares to the United States of America and we have the likes of John Adams, George Washington and Thomas Jefferson and their families to thank for what we so enjoy today. If you get a chance, check out the series "John Adams" on HBO you will be richly rewarded.

One of the most memorable books I ever had to read was an Abigail Adams biography and I remember the many letters that were referenced in the book which were written between her and Thomas Jefferson. Journals and letters I'm sure went into the making of this film with great care. I was floored at the end when I remembered how and when both Jefferson and Adams died. (I won't ruin it here... it on On Demand)

It seems to me that perhaps Adams should have been called the father of our country over General Washington since it was he who first stood up in congress and called for a declaration of Independence... according to the series anyway. It was a movingly authentic bit of patriotic time travel... a strong unbiased look at ordinary humans doing extraordinary things.

Carlos. Totally OFF Topic but can you post the ratings numbers for L.A.? Specifically any ratings that indicate how your station stacks up, at say, the 9 am hour? Just call me curious.

Carlos, I didn't realize HBO was running a special like that. Although we get HBO, I don't watch it much...the rest of the family does however. I have missed much I'm sure but I will defiantly search out the rest.

As to your comments in reference to our country, I couldn't agree with you more. Regardless of our problems, I wouldn't trade the country that I was born and raised in for ANY country in the world.

Thank you for your insight. Hope you have a wonderful weekend :)

Carlos,

Kudos guy! We need to remember the sacrifices our forefathers went through to make this one great nation. Even though we're never going to be perfect, this nation is probably the best nation to live in. We have so many opportunities, we should not lose sight of that, ever.

GOOD CALL CARLOS - I loved this mini-series... Adams was a true political independent... open to varying arguments, but moored in his core beliefs.... Hamilton's Federalist notions gave us a better understand of the roots of conservativism... and Jefferson's staunch liberalism and dedication to diplomacy was unmatched (except maybe by Franklin).

Adams has a great quote when talks centered around going to War against France - "Great is the guilt of an unnecessary war."

ALTERNATIVE BIO Dude grew up on the shores of San Diego longboarding, crusin' the streets in my '66 VW and playing soccer. I played guitar in my dad's mariachi band for like ten years and saved enough money to go to college. I got straight A's in English 'cause I had to learn it as a second language. I started broadcasting on my college radio station reading news in the morning. I took a break for two years to be a missionary for my church in Guatemala and El Salvador, two beautiful countries. When I returned I surfed, played soccer, played guitar in a rock band, waited tables and went back to college radio. Along my rambling trail I met a real cute girl and married her. I moved to television reporting and had a bunch of kids by the time I was thirty. Still surfing, still playing guitar but now clearly a devoted husband and father. Dude, I even got to do a story for Walter Cronkite! I was gone alot from my family in those early years but Mary was my rock and held down the fort. Don't worry we had lots of quality family time! Somewhere in the haze that is my memory, my kids grew up to be pretty amazing. I landed at KTLA and spent 16 wonderful years there. In September of last year I parked my VW, surfboard and guitar at Fox11 and dude, I am loving life!
