My first job was a cashier at Wal-Mart at the age of 17. Since then I have worked as a cashier at three more retail stores. I have to say I am appalled by the lack of customer service from places lately. I try my best to be helpful and open to my customers. I am not going to say I don't have my bad days but I do my best to provide customers with the best customer service.

Case in point. A few days ago I was in Giant Eagle. The cashier in question was very rude. First she took a moment to have a small personal conversation with a co worker. Had nothing of importance to her job as a cashier. I'm sitting there waiting impatiently for a minute or two waiting for her to start ringing me out. Also keep in mind there were at least two or three other people behind me. Finally I interrupted the conversation. There was no greeting or have a nice day. Just an announcement of my total and my change. I was appalled. Now don't get me wrong I chit chat with my fellow co workers but once I have a customer walk up to my counter any conversation is halted.

Now let's flash to today's episode at Wal-Mart. First off the lady in front of me needed a price check. The cashier was just sitting there waiting for the worker in the department to call her back. She didn't attempt to call a manager on duty. She told the head cashier but she was useless. If that was me I would have used every resource possible to get the price check as quick as possible. If the difference was only a dollar or two I would have just given her it. Not to mention the cashier never greeted me, slow as all get up, and was tying my bags up (hello makes it hard to use the handles).

There are many more instances that are just as appalling. This is why I generally make use of the self check out. The standards stores have for customer service now a days are bad. They seem to forget that if you do not have any customers you won't have a job. I know working with the public can be tough but it is still a job you choose and you should do it to the best of your abilities and with some pride. I don't know if it is my experience as a cashier that makes me very pick y about service or what.

Now we know why you can't keep a job.

You get ticked off just because someone is just
doing their job by giving you the total you
owe and your change.

Okaaaaaay.

You have an episode cause the manager wasn't
called for something simple like a price check?

Then you'd cause a shortage on the days take by
giving a person an extra dollar or two off?

You're only 24 and you're already acting like
the world evolves around you?

Lord, help us.

when getting a price check there is a certain protocol that you go by and that starts off with calling the department. second of all you need a managers approval to get a customer a product at a different price then what it is. third, all that cashier can do is stand there and wait because at all the places that i have worked you are told DO NOT LEAVE YOUR REGISTER! I know first hand that customer service is hard even when you have to put up with some of the crap from the customers. you know, the ones that are in a hurry and have no patience

butterfly, I totally agree with you. I don't mind the price check, but I've been in stores (Giant Eagle is one & K-mart another) where a co-worker comes over and the cashier is having a personal conversation about their family or a party or whatever (never anything work related). They ignore the fact that there are 4 people in line and just continue talking. HELLO... you're there to do your JOB. Any chit chat can wait until you go on break. And then they get an attitude if you say something like: "I've been waiting 10 minutes" or go find a manager and report them.

instead of complaining on this blog, why dont you take the experience you have and utilize it properly. open up your own customer consultant firm and go into these companies with service issues and train them properly. complaining solves nothing other than gives you an opportunity to vent. that all complaining is. if you were that offended you would truely do something about it. you decide what side of the fence you are on. good luck in your decision.

Wow, apparently you just ticked off all the lazy people who don't feel like going above and beyond what their "job description" entails. That is, if they even actually reached that standard. Don't worry, because soon the nice "undocumented workers" will soon take their jobs and will be willing to work hard and be polite so they can earn a lot of money to send back to their home country. Too bad for underachievers...

I agree totally. I am extremely annoyed with the majority of customer service these days. They are not there for service what so ever. If I come across great customer service I make sure to let someone know. It is rare and few and far in between though.

On the flip side butterfly...did you happen to greet the cashier? More often than not,I observe rude and obnoxious patrons. At times,I have been shocked by the way that "the customer" will rant and rave over a simple human error.

I'm not making excuses for anyone. You are correct in that, some people take absolutely no pride in their work. However, those folks are probably not the NORM. Believe it or not,I receive excellent customer service practically everywhere I choose to spend my money. It goes back to what my parents taught me. As the old saying goes, you can catch more flies with honey, than with vinegar. May seem cliche'...but it's true.

I agree with butterfly. I am picky about customer service to. If you are working as a customer service representative then you have to deal with customers pleasantly. If you do not like your job go work in the warehouse so I don't have to deal with your crappy attitude. On the flip side . If you are the customer have the common curtesy to GET OFF THE PHONE when a cashier is waiting on you!

I was ticked off because it is rude. Working as a cashier you are taught to greet your customers, announce their total, hand them change/receipt, and then wish them a nice day. This is standard among pretty much any company.

I do understand the protocol. This woman was just standing there not making any effort except a couple phone calls to the department. Her head cashier was even more worthless and did nothing. Why it irritated me? Because as a cashier you are suppose to give customers a quick, pleasant, and speedy checkout.

As far as letting them have the one or two dollars off. Every manager I ever had has told me that was ok. Yes we lost one or two dollars but we kept not only the customer in question happy but they people behind them happy. Happy customers come back and spend more money! Which is why they always encouraged if it was only a couple of bucks to just give it to them

I especially enjoyed the comment about me expecting the world to revolve around me. I never said it did. How come I come off selfish because I expect cashiers to have good customer service? That is like being called selfish because you expect your doctor to be knowledgeable about medicine.

I have plenty of experience and have come across my share of crabby customers. Here is the difference I am the cashier, they are the customer. I am expected to act a certain way. Do everything possible to reach someone, anyone instead of just standing there doing nothing. Heck that poor woman waiting on the price check was still waiting even as I was done and leaving the store. If you were that customer or the ones behind her most of you would just be as irritated. But because I'm in my 20's I'm selfish and expect the world to revolve around me. I guess it is different if it was you.

That is the problem with today's society we let people get away with such low expectations.
