I agree that city council should find ways to streamline a budget, cut out unnecessary spending, etc. But to cut out a police force should have never even been considered. The welfare of your city and its residents should never be up for the chopping blocks. Not to mention the number of people that would be unemployed due to this ridiculous plan. The money you think you would be saving you will end up having to send to the Summit county Sherrif's department anyway to accommodate for their extra work and the extra sherrifs they will need.

Ha, hee, ha hee, hee, ha ha ha, are you joking? Everybodys defination of unnecessary spending is differnt!! Never going to please everyone on that one!! I think Mayors or councilmen should not recieve large amounts of pay for serving, military men put thier life on the line and look what they are paid, then congress keeps taking away more benefits, just not right!!

A police force should never be considered unnecessary spending regardless of what your definition of unnecessary spending is.

butterflykisses you are right about that. I agree the police and firefighters should be the last thing to be cut.

well, when we have republicans in office saying that they want no new taxes (g.w. even gave us money back once !!) but spending increases. what do you think is going to happen?--cut funding in certain other areas. unfortunately we cut funding to communities, parks, social aid but we increase spending on a disgraceful war that is breeding more problems. if we don't increase taxes then we how are we to pay for things?

Stuman- Why does every exisisting problem in this country always fall to the Republicans? What we really need to do is cut spending on these "social programs" that do nothing but support certain people. As for this "disgraceful" war, is this what you want me to tell my son when he returns from the war on terror? maybe YOU would like to tell him yourself. He is defending his country so that you have the right to say the goofy stuff you do. The USA is the BEST place to live on this planet. If you don't really like it here, you can go north or south! You guys are not looking at the Norton police issue in the dollars and cents way. Cities and Villages all over Ohio are seeing there budgets cut by the state, and so they have to asked for more money from the public.

Summit county has a fine sherrif department, they do cover Norton and serve as back up for the police now.
This is a duplication of services.

Norton has to provide it's own staff, secretaries, dispachers, insurance, police cars, training, detectives, special operations and equipment etc. The sherrif department already has those people on staff, so if the city of Norton pays the sherrifs department to come in a patrol with dedicated cars in the Norton area, maybe even a sherrifs post in Norton, the norton city council looses the liability for the force and saves a lot of extra money not having to employ the extra people and equipment. That is dollars in the pockets of the City of Norton. And the city will not have to go back to the voters and aske for more money to run their own department.

If there is something big in Norton, you can bet the force that Norton Police calls in for help will be the Sherrif Department with a already up and running swat team.

Dear Kalayna, Like many other people making statements about Norton Police you are miss informed. When the Norton Police Department needs to call out SWAT it does not call the Summit County Sherrif's team!!! Norton has been a member of Metro Swat for over 10 yr. Metro Swat serves most of the Summit County and Portage County area!!! I think most people are giving out facts about the Norton Police Department and the Sherrif's Department, but do not know the truth!! Here is the main fact, it is not a money issue it is a personel issue that one member of council has with the Chief of police. He openly stated that in a recent meeting. It's been going on for 15 years!! The public needs to know the facts, not rumors and false statements because there are 20 other employees and their families involved!!
