Plain Local Schools

Watching the news this morning Plain Local Schools close their schools down today. Was it the weather? Illness? No heat? No the superintendent shut the schools down for the day because their basketball team made it to state. They are playing in Columbus tonight. Apparently they shut school down so people can go.

 

I have to say I am highly disappointed in Plain Local Schools for shutting school down for such a reason. Those emergency days are there for a reason. Not to shut school down because of a sports event. People might argue that "Well they can make the day up at the end of the year". I say that is not the point. School is there for education. Children are learning to read, write, and become productive members of society. Sports are there for extra curricular activities. It gives the kids something fun to participate in but to dictate whether or not a school is in session because of a game.

 

Now I'm not trying to knock the basketball teams achievement. They should be proud of what they have done. Still we are a sports obsessed culture to the point that now we are calling off school so people can attend a sports event.

 

If I was a parent of Plain Local Schools I would seriously consider pulling my child(ren) out of their district. A move like this would make me worry about weather or not the district has my child(ren)'s education as their primary interest. Call me hysterical, say I'm over reacting, but I stand by my opinion. We do not place enough emphasis on education. This is why countries like China, Japan, and many more has educational systems that far surpass our own.

Education is seriously hindered here in the US. I believe that amongst the nations that are capable of a decent education we by comparison are seriouly lacking. Our priorities are way off target in my opinion. I agree that sports have taken over the curriculum in our schools. Along with some parents who feel that education is not that important. I know alot of parents say that is not so but watch what they do. These kids are home because they don't feel well. No fevers or throwing up is obvious. They're late because they were tired. They stay home because they haven't finished there homework. They get picked up early. Same BS about not feeling well. But miraculously feel better an hour later! Or how about taking the child out of school for vacations. No wonder the children don't take school seriously. There parents don't!

I've been a substitute teacher since I graduated from college with my degree and license in 2005. Since then I have really seen all the crap and the red tape that the teachers have to put up with. It is enough to make me seriously consider a new career. Its a shame because I love working with children. The rewards sadly do not out weigh the crap that teachers have to deal with anymore.

Ha ha I just realized I used the wrong kind of weather in my sentence. Should be whether no weather.

I'm afraid I agree with you. I really feel that we're going to have a serious shortage of teachers. Not only them but police officers as well. No one wants to put up with this ridiculous crap. I was a teachers aid for less than a year. I was so appauled with what I saw at the schools that I would NEVER do it again.

I also have to agree with what you say when I was in school there could of been 2 feet of snow and we still had to walk. Now it seems like education is not taken serious at all like it should. It is also true that education in the US is nothing like the other countries like japan and china the standards have really dropped.

Sports is "king" in this country. Too bad!! Until we get our priorities straight and realize that education should come first, I'm afraid things will not change.

Well, I live in Plain Township near the Football Hall of Fame. Plain township continues to want $$$$ just like many other schools in Ohio. Plain township recently built a brand new middleschool/Highschool complex. Every year they want more money, thats why the levy continues to be turned downed! Taxpayers/homeowners continue to be asked every year for increases in their property taxes........Residents are tired of it, we never get anything back for it. If its not a support levy, its an operating levy. Our education standards are lower than most nations, we have teachers both female and male continue to have sex with their students, they get 3 months off with pay, all holidays and sick days with pay......teachers are not held accountable for their student's performance.
I taught part-time on the secondary level for two years and it was really easy! Yes, it was all early aldults and not junior/highschool students which is a major differnce but still the schools still do not get it. Its about a Quality Education not a Sport Event, which is going to support aprox. 92% of those students when they graduate.
