I was raised Catholic, and never in my many years did I ever use a rosary for a necklace.

They are prayer beads, used for prayer and meditation. They are not necklaces.

Those worn as necklaces, are gang symbols, and if parents don't know they have their heads in the sand.  How many of these kids wearing rosarys, as neckaces, are Catholic?

I am not sure, when this became the in gang symbol, or part of the package, but kids started coming in my store wearing them, I would ask them if they knew what the rosary was, were they Catholic? Most would say no to each question, so I asked them to please respect my faith, and place them inside their shirts, when in my store. Tehy did that, and as long as they respected me, I respected them.

I know this was a big issue last year in the Seattle area. A local Hispanic gang had started wearing rosaries as a symbol of membership. When school authorities tried to stop them, they shouted discrimination based on religious grounds. Just this week one of our known gang wannabes showed up in the class next door decked out with a rosary. Likewise, as a cradle Catholic know that a rosary is meant for meditation and to keep account of prayers said for the different decades of the rosary. I was always told it was sacriligious to wear it as a necklace. I think this may be something coming via the Left coast. I asked my AP about it just this morning. I will let you know what he finds out.

You are right. The Rosary is not to be worn as a necklace.

The rosary is a religious artifact and nothing more. Repettitive prayer, prayer to idols, Mariology and salvation by works plus faith are errant theology.

ditto Scotty....
i do agree with above comments however....i am sure these gangs picked this symbol so they could scream out they were being attacked for their religous beliefs...yet, probably they would be the first ones to protest if they were asked to pray.

scotty, the blog has to do with the rosary as a gang symbol not as a faith blog.
There are many faiths out there, and I respect them all.
As I said, the rosary, used by faithful catholics, for prayer, and meditation, not as a neclace.

Look hanging from peoples car mirrors...they always have their rosaries hung there. I'm not catholic and don't really understand the rosary but i understand enough to know it is dear to those who use it. It's a shame the good things people will take and use for bad purposes.

Babysister, that gangs use the rosary beads as emblems is not surprising.

And by the way, praying the rosary is idolatry. The Bible tells us that: "for there is one God and one mediator between God and man, the man Christ Jesus" (1 Timothy 2:5).

The rosary is prayed to Mary, not Jesus. Therefore it is idolatry.

You don't pray to the Rosary. The Rosary is used as a meditation & prayers to ask Mary to intercede on our behalf. It isn't idolatry because it isn't worshiping the Rosary or Mary.

Last time I checked the Catholics worshiped the same Bible that all other Christians do.

Don't use this blog as an excuse to be a douchebag and rip on the Catholics.

I can understand (though don't agree with) busting on other religions when your a Christian. But attacking another Christian group is just STUPID.

Try and stay on topic....This is a blog about gang members abusing a religious item in order to sneak their gang affiliation.

Which is just wrong on ALL counts.

It always ticks me off when I see a parent acting like this girls mother. We send our kids to school to get an education, not some sort of fashion show. If that principle let some kids wear them but not others, I could see a problem.
""Parents"" lets get behind our educators, quit trying to let these spoiled children run the schools.

Pokerphil...you are ripping on scotty for his beliefs. He simply stated what most non catholics believe...Catholics use the rosary to meditate while they pray to mary. The Bible i read simply states to pray to Jesus. I'd be willing to look up any scripture you can give me that tells me to pray to mary tho. :)

I was also raised Catholic, and I DID sometimes wear my rosary.

I would mostly wear it in times when I felt that I needed it and felt closer to God.

I was in junior and high school. And honestly, I would wear it during those trying times when I really needed to pray.

I DON'T believe that they wear it as a gang symbol and believe that alot of those that do think that way only think that because of who is wearing it.

Sorry, just my honest opinion.

And, TM is right, ALOT of people hold it very dear to them and believe that when it is with them, they are safe.

Dannosr, I agree with you....but, we also send our kids for the educators to educate our children, not to decide what kind of clothing is going to help our kids pass.

My sons middle school wears uniforms. 6th in white shirt and navy pants, 7th in white shirts and kacky pants and 8th in black shirt and kacky pants.
I STILL CAN'T FIND MY KID QUICKLY!

They have them all dressed the same with the same haircuts and all.

With the rosary, your prayer is "Our Father" and "Hail Mary"

Those are the only two prayers said with the rosary.

Religious artifacts have nothing to do with Christianity.

Gangs ruin a lot of things for others.

Poker, the Bible I read is different than the Bible Catholics read as it doesn't contain the uninspired Apocrypha (added 13 books of the Bible).

Oh for cornball sake.
I spent the 1st 8yrs of my education in an old fashioned Catholic school enviroment.
I shudder to think of what would've happened if someone came to class wearing a Rosary around their neck like jewelery. Guess it would depend on which Nun noticed it 1st, but can promise, the outcome wouldn't have been pleasant.
Rosaries are not for hanging on the rear view mirror, they're not for wearing as a necklace, most have been blessed & if this young lady truly respects her Rosary she wouldn't be showing such disrespect.
Someone from the Catholic Dioc. needs to call this Mother & her kid & explain the proper use of the Rosary, can promise being worn as a decoration isn't going to be on the list.
