A new study found that parents spend 30 percent more time with their first-born children than with the rest of the brood.

Now, I wager that the first-borns among us will say that's because they were busy getting instructions on how to feed, care for, and clean up after their younger brethen.

I say that only because I'm the youngest of five kids. :) Yes, I got away with murder. ("I didn't get to do that when I was your age!" was the constant refrain growing up.)

What are your thoughts on birth order and how it plays out in personality? Does it really make a difference? Many first-borns are high achievers and perfectionists, but I suppose it's not always true. Where do you fall in your family, and did it make a difference in how your parents treated you?

I am a first born. I have 2 brothers, each 4 years younger than me. When I had to babysit, I chased them with butcher knives (it's actually funny now). Once, my LITTLE bro ran out of the house naked while I was "babysitting", and my dad was so mad he pushed me through a sheetrock wall (we were renovating at the time). I think more kids need that kind of fun growing up these days....and really, I LAUGH about it now, and have a wonderful relationship with my dad... (even though the first time I got drunk, he got me up at 5 am to clean a basement filled with salamanders).

Just sayin....

What kind of fish, Illisions?

Actually, I'm more interested in the salamanders...were they Neuse River Waterdog?

Marks, the salamanders were fugly! The ones that come out when it rains a bunch.......I imagine them as alligators in Miami,,,but that's just me......lol. (that's before the sump pump takes over, btw)

Fish for eating? I prefer Walleye. Fish I killed while cleaning the fish tank, Goldfish.

What can I say. Baaaaaaaaaaaaaaddddddddddddddddddddddddd illusionsssss.

And my first born is EXACTLY like his mama, cept more stubborn...my middle one is sensitive (NOT like mama), and my identical twins LOOK alike, but totally different in temperment. Honestly, I love each of them the same, just in different aspects.

I think you're right, alice. First born's - it's ALL NEW & SCARY?
By the 2nd (myself) parents learn to relax - the child doesn't 'break' all that easily.
By the 3rd & on - it's more like "DON'T BLEED ON the carpet".
Just the way it is. lol

Being the youngest has it's perks. I've always had someone to take care of and look out for me. downside tho is that the youngest isn't taught responsibility like the others.

i have 3 kids...was very very stict on my oldest...now that i have 2 that are close in age..it's like char says...don't bleed on the carpet. lol

I am the oldest of 3. But - I have always been the smallest of the 3, too.

Which meant - I had the parents more "strict" with me - and still got my (_|_) kicked by my sisters.

Made for a lot of fun (I hope the dripping sarcasm is evident).

I am the oldest of three. Two younger brothers and what a pain they were lol.As the oldest I was expected to set an example and look out for them, which I did.I always took up for them and fought many a boy that thought it would be fun to pick on one of them.My theory is...the oldest is the smarter and more sensible one...the middle one is just kinda there trying to get attention somehow...and the third(last one) is never going to grow up and take responsibility as they have had way too much babying lol.
