I will never buy a Prius to save gas and most Hybrids cost too much that ZEROs out the money saved in gas saved.

But I saw a car today that was really really small but looked safe enough and was from a large Car maker... It looked like a Honda maybe???

What are the little cars that get the best milage but yet passenger friendly.  I wouldnt go to Atlanta in it but around town or maybe DAB to Orlando maybe.  NOw I can afford the expensive gas but I hate letting Russia, OPEC and Venz get away with it.  My biz jet would make Carbon folks hate me.

Toyota make the Scion line that is good on gas. We have Toyota Matrix which gets over 30mpg in the city parking lot. My mom drives a Toyota Corolla which also gets over 30mpg in ugly city driving.

I've had the best luck with Toyota, so that is what we prefer to buy. Ford wants to put out an inferior product, charge more money and support the gay movement, so they won't be getting my business. Chevy's gas mileage just wasn't there and there price was higher.

I have been complaining about gas mileage and wanting these car manufacturers to put out more options in gas sipping products for 10 yrs. It took 'em long enough!

My Toyota Rav4, which I gave to my daughter as a graduation gift, gets "pretty good" gas mileage- around 24mpg around town and maybe 28 or 30 on the highway. It was plenty of "guts to go" and all the "toys." She loves it, and that's all that matters.

The mileage starts from the highest mileage to the lowest. Show me where at 206K miles he's shelled out for a new battery pack? That'd give me over a $10K savings of what I'm getting for mileage at the Prius lowest mileage rating.

Go get yourself a GM....Pontiac Grand Prix GXP. It's got the balls and I can get 30 or more mpg (sometimes 34) with it. It's got the V8 and shuts down 4 cylinders when on the highway. You can save money and have a decent car to look at.

Truthguys~

Whats wrong with the Prius?? Have you ever driven one? Im 6'3" and can sit in the back seat with legroom to spare..

The battery pack in a prius is designed to last 10 yrs.. There are 98/99 prius's that are still running strong today with out having the battery ever replaced...

You can call me what you want, but My wife averaged 47 mpgs in all around driving...

PS. Toyota sold their 98 hybrid platform to GM, Honda & Nissan, so they too could create their own platforms.. :o)

signal: your having to many after thoughts today :P..

Actually I used a lower number than your 47mpg to come up with my $10K figure. Those batteries are designed to last the life of the car according Toyota. I've also read at 190K miles the batteries showed no signs of degradation, from independent labs. I think the real problem comes down to the same thing why people had fears of the horseless buggy. We are afraid of change as a species.

Prius 48 mpg city 45 mpg highway according to dealer spec , but in independent testing (car and driver/MSN auto /Yahoo etc) has only EVER archived a high mark of 44 mpg city ...real world mileage never meets with what is on the sticker with few exceptions...non of the hybrid's have ever been able to make their claims in real world testing ! And they can only be considered an acceptable driving car if your last vehicle was the Exxon Valdez ..
The car you are thinking of may be one of the new Pontiac's or a Saturn both have identical* sports cars this year ...I think it looks like a BMW ! *same car they both are identical under the trim/detail package.

dks75~
I wasnt arguing your point, however they even tell you. You have to change the way you drive..

RNC08~
Again read what the owners are saying, they too have changed to way they are driving and some are getting better mileage. The road testers are driving the car the same as you would anyother car thus getting lower mileage..

The design of the car was to make it more areodynamic than the corvette for 04..

arent the 48/45 the epa's new relistic numbers? Down from the 60 mpg it used to get?

My '98 Saturn coupe got 38 mpg.
The new ones get 30 mpg!
My take on it is that car companies just don't care to produce fuel efficient cars.
That is how the foreign cars got into US markets in the mid 70's.
It made me want to cry to hear Ford claiming to be as good as a Toyota!
Who would have believed in the 60's and 70's that a US company would ever consider that "braggin' themselves up"?
If US car companies really wanted to produce high mileage cars, they could, even without the duo fuel of the hybrids.

signal I think you took me wrong I wasn't disagreeing, writing was never my strong point :).

I think they are a good thing. I get an average 26mpg highway/city.. Which I believe would have cost pretty close to the same for either car, if I accounted for inflation.

Signal, who needs a backseat, right? I mean, anybody used to a true muscle car (Camaros, 'Vettes, "T/A'a, etc), know those back seats were made exclusively for midgets!
LOL

pay for that damn battery...there is NO such thing as "Life of the car" that's market hype.Consider the energy cost to make the battery in the first place..plus the environmental nightmare getting rid of the things is going to be..I will keep my Ford V-6.

O thanks signal I forgot about the “super miler nut job” factor. Why is it that “owner reported mileage is like a vampire and can never be photographed “ ....it never occurred to me that this guy was driving 21 miles an hour down hill from a rolling start etc etc ...because he has been reporting : driving 25,000 miles a year , getting 55 miles to a gallon 500 miles to a tank and NO maintenance at 296,000 miles ! O yea and his does 0 to 60 in under 9 !! LOL

And Deb dear I do do need a back seat (I have long legs) with out it how am I supposed to lean my seat back and watch the stars ... rag tops rule !

dks75~ I apoligise if I offended, I was directing my replies to TG.

The original epa rating 50/60 was done in a controlled setting (it was ridiculous) & not our standards but Japans.

The new 48/45 is more in tune with our EPA standards.. There are Hypermiler nut jobs out there..

I just get frustrated when I hear ignorant people bash them and they've never even drove a Hybrid or looked at the figures..

They can be as bad as Liberals when explaining cost vs savings.. Even if someone provieds proof it must be tainted ....

Yes they cost more than a normal car, yes they do get 10mpgs more than a standard car.. Do hybrid drivers save money in the long run on fuel? yes.

My wife now drives 60 miles a day, and now fills up once a week. (roughly 500 miles a wk) Comparied to when she was drove a 4cy Edge and was having to fill up twice a week. (she was interested in possibly getting one so she rented one for a month)..

The Toyota hybrid costs about 200 a month for fuel.

The Edge costs 400 for a month for fuel

I was not speaking out of turn , over blown exaggerations of mileage are not helping the situation . I have said a number of times that I have a metro here for short hops and it is a perfect “fit” because it get run constantly for 8 months out of the year and then just sits for 2 to 4 months at a time , I do not use it for trips longer than 50 miles one way because it is not comfortable even tho its MPG goes up on the highway (not down) ...I have a cabin in north Georgia and make several trips to Key West every year , how does the MPG fair on the Prius in the mountains north of Atlanta Georgia ? How does it fair on the highway in summer heat ? ...having said that there are drive types that a hybrid can save gas on but out of its element it is not going to save the average user any money and sad as it is most people only buy one car and use it for everything...
If we are going to talk about hybrid sales I will point out that Toyota bought its first hybrid designs from Oldsmobile in the early part of 1991...the “prototype” I first saw by Oldsmobile in 1988 was a bit exotic but had all the same key tech that the Prius is based on (minus the hydrogen rotary engine and minus the 70 MPG it had at the time with out a batteries system / true hybrid at all times )

I had heard that the hybrids don't do so well on gas mileage if you run the AC. Is this true?

Honestly, we didn't consider the hybrids because of the price and they were untried at the time. Our matrix cost us 15k. The Prius at the dealership was more then twice and not enough room for the puppies.
