I admit it. I thought I would be nominated the coolest mom in the world when I told my son that he and I were going to see Vampire Weekend at the Wiltern! This would be his first popular music concert. He's been to plenty of classical music concerts. I've taken him to Hollywood Bowl to hear the Philharmonic on the fourth of July. And, I'm sure we've been somewhere where some band was playing on some stage.
But this time we would take actual tickets, stand in line and hope for a decent view of a band he loves.
I was so proud of myself, so looking forward to it, I mentioned it to my co-anchor, Jeff Michael. He apparently knows what it's really like to be a cool parent. He gave me this mortified look and asked how my 14 year old felt about his mom taking him to a concert. Then, he said, can't you just drop him off with a friend?
Darn it. I was really looking forward to this and now, I'm wondering if my son is just humoring me when he says, "no worries, Mom, I can't wait."

So now, I'm curious.  What was your first concert experience like?

my first concert at a 20,000 seat indoor arena was nice. the performing group was Chicago. i was familiar with many of the songs they played. in 1975, i was 15, smoking was permitted inside the arena. second hand smoke gave me a headache at several concerts, i was not smoking. tickets were $6 and $7. three years later an outdoor Stones concert in chicago was $11. three years after that ('81) an outdoor Stones show in Philly was $17. in '89 an outdoor Stones event at the LA Coliseum as $35. by this time when i was 29, i decided to buy a ticket outside the outdoor venue when i arrived. same M.O. at Dodger stadium in '97 and in '06. as and 8th grader, i would come home from school and eat an entire Tony's frozen pizza. i don't remember if my mom was cooking dinner everyday at this point. she never went to a concert with me. susan you seem to be a fun woman! and a cool mom!

SUSAN,

My first concert was Aroesmith and I went with my Mom. I was 14, the summer before freshman year. It was a blast!! I always knew my mom was fun, but I never thought she was THAT much fun. I think it just depends on what kind of relationship you have with your son. I think you should go woth him, and show him how much fun you can have together. Good Luck!

Susan,

If you have another opportunity to take your son to a concert, don't tell Jeff Michael! Perhaps you should all go as a family, and let your children invite 1 friend each (I know...CHA CHING...YEEEEEE YIKES!!! Bleeding Green!!!). But it just might be worth it.

Now, my folks never took me to a concert (typical Japanese folks from the old country), so my first "official concert" was a Josie Cotton concert at the now defunct Radio City in West Anaheim California. I knew one of the employees there, so I got to chat with Josie and the band back stage. In fact, I went to her concert a second time, and got to chat again with her back stage. She recognized me somewhat from the time before. I just hope her home in Malibu survived the fires!

Jeff makes a good point. yet as long as you want to go, take a cameraman with you. sounds like a story to me. interview the band. i've read they're from Columbia University. yes. there's a story there.

the first show i went too was danzig when i was in high school. i went with a few buds of mine. it was sweet. the end of the night i had beer, and blood all over me, and was high from all the pot smoke that everyone else was smoking. the 2nd show was vince neil of motley crue. i was front row center. i was alone that time, but it was freakin great. i just been to alot of rock shows in general, and i woundn't mind at all going with my mom or dad to any of them. pretty much it's dark, it's crowded, and everyone attention is on the band. so no worries about him being embarrased. if anything you should be the one watching out. i been to alot of show, and i can tell you the rules of concerts. 1. wear sneakers or boots cuz your gonna be standing up all night if your close to the stage and people will be stepping your feet pretty often. 2. wear the normal black or white t shirt and jeans. anything else might be too flashy, and most likly your gonna get beer spilled on it or if the mosh pit is great maybe blood stains. 3. if your infront, your asking for a beating. mostly the first 5 rows everyone is pushing and shoving and being crushed to get closer to the stage, and then the next following rows will be the mosh pit area, then after that are the normal people that just want to sit and relax and watch the show. last rule is just watch out for perv's that are gonna try to feel ya up. yeah, they will take advantage at the fact that you dont know who is grabbing your butt or ta ta's.

part 2.

i hope that you have done research on the band. mostly just take time to get to know the songs. if you dont know the songs, then it all just sounds like noise when you see them live. i dont know. that's just what i notice. like when i went with a friend to see the buzzco*ks i wasn't too familar with them so all the songs sounded the same. so i didnt have as much fun as i would of if i knew the tunes more.

well i did research on this band. i don't think you have to worry too much about this band. they dont seem too dangerous. but who knows. personally the rougher the crowd, the better the show. so if you ever get a chance, go see arch enemy or cradle of filth.

A cool parent- you say??? What T.v . pop culture show have you been watching over the last decade?? Kids really dont care about their parents(particluar their .....mothers....) being cool- unless you are going to be providing beer for him and his teenage buds when he turns 15. Why dont you try just being a parent? Being cool for teenagers should have been left at the door when you graduated. And you are a professional news caster?????

p.s- When i went to see a montley crue concert back in the 80s when I was 14 , my mother being there was the last thing I wanted. If you trust your kid and he turst your views, he will simple go to a concert and listen to the band -maybe even dance - and nothing more

susan, you are the coolest mom. i feel you can take on the mindset of a 15 year old and truly enjoy the company of your sons and their friends. if the situation is too uncomfortable for you as the boys become verbally abusive to you, send them to their dad! you are the loveliest of american women. the idea of taking a cameraman to the concert at the wiltern sounds good to me! muah!

i have a sense we ought to keep liz habib in the field when susan is an anchor. i'm getting a bad vibe from liz's aggressiveness when liz is in the studio. it's not a good fit. it's just not something i want to see from my living room. liz simply has not learned the concept of speaking softly and slowly. the concept of taking long pauses at the end of clauses and especially at the end of sentences. i don't get a sense that liz has any perspective that she is teaching the viewers what has happened today. this is L.A. cough.
