Steve Says

Did you see it? I could hardly believe it when a friend text messaged me in a written yet frantic tone.  GAS FOR $2.97 a gallon!  (regular unleaded)  The big sign on the street said $3.97 but for some reason the pump read $2.97 and the receipts showed that's the price that folks were getting charged.
Gas at $2.97 a gallon?  Such an unfamiliar site that I had to post a picture!
Just one question.  Can the gas station come back and say "sorry" it was an error and we'll adjust everyone's charge?  It was a credit only station (the unmanned one at the corner of Lemmon and Oaklawn in Dallas) so the have records of everyone who bought gas. Does anyone know the answer?  I'm thinking.. no.

The person who owns that station lost alot of money because of that error. I'd have felt guilty if i would have gotten gas there...knowing someone was going to be paying the difference. Shame on those customers for not calling the owner..assuming an emergency phone number was listed

A mistake is a mistake so I would think they could, but legally I suppose not. I would ASK first if the price were correct, since I have no interest in stealing or skrewing over someone else. I'm with TM, why not do the right thing .. guess we know the answer to that one.

I would also say that the price was a Deal & a Dud at the same time.

Oh, Stevie, you bad boy!

My permanently guilty conscience wouldn't have allowed me to do it, but I really don't see how they can get more money out of you because of their error. That would be changing the price of something AFTER you bought it.

i'd be afraid if was those ppl that got the cheap gas...afraid it would come around and bite me in the butt.

Guess becoming a thief is not in our future :)

Steve, i did not mean for anyone to think i was saying you are a thief. But i was assuming you did not buy that gas, that you were just reporting the issue. If you did buy that gas then shame on you. if not, then THANK YOU for your honesty

The gas station can't come back and adjust the charge. Companies have to eat their errors all the time. Thanks though to the honest people who kept it from turning into a nightmare! The gas station can make up for it by charging $10 for a stick of gum (which they already do).

color me impressed at everyone's 'cash-register' honesty. I half expected a rash of comments about how we've been screwed long enough by big oil and it's about time we got a break (even through a mistake)

FURBIE: that job listing is HYSTERICAL!

For the record... I didn't buy any gas :-(

I'm so glad you did not buy it, Steve. You seemed like an honest person to me and it's nice to see that you really are. :)

I could use another ten gallons of gas...but I aint driving from Arlington to Lemmon & Oak Lawn for it. Besides; such a thing might go against my CRC rule.
Where I work, if a person ships out more than what the customer ordered, that person just bought the overship! As may happen to the person that undercharged the gas price.

Oh, Steve, there goes my bad boy theory. I thought surely if you went all the way out for a picture, you would have bought some!

Gas stations don't make much on gas - they make their money on candy bars and expired medicines. I don't know anyone who would punish the "little guy" for oil prices.

well, i look at like this...you pay the price listed on the pump. just like if they are raising the price or lowering it, it is the price on the pump that is being charged. i would have filled up with an ok clear conscious about it. keep in mind, i am the person always tracking down the owner of lost wallets, money, cell phones, jewelry, kids, etc. when given too much change back, i always make it right no matter how little or how big. you paid what was on the pump. they change the signs before they change the pumps' prices.

p.s.
i think i recall hearing somewhere that a gas station did try to recoup their losses on a similar situation. it was not that long ago. but i cannot recall the details

It may seem like a heavily pre-produced comment, but I really DO love hearing from our viewers. The segments I do on FOX4 (On Your Side, Save Me Steve, and Deal or Dud) are all about helping you live better day to day. Many of my story ideas come from folks like you- my work is really YOUR work. I’m here to save you time, save you money and save you from getting ripped off. OK, now that all of that formal stuff is out of the way- here’s a little about me. Yes, I’m a Yankee- born and raised in New York, I love living in North Texas, it is so refreshing to be in a place where people are proud of the heritage years of rich history have created. Back at home in NY the tie that binds very often is the lack thereof – really, nobody is REALLY from NY anymore it seems. What’s that you say? There’s nothing to do in North Texas except shop and eat? PERFECT! Those are my two favorite things! When I’m not at work and not eating or shopping (bargain hunting is more like it) you’ll find me walking my dog Parker (that’s his picture - we got him at the Weim Rescue of North Texas), inappropriately using the punctuation “…”, or driving with the top down and pretending I know the lyrics to whatever song I’m listening to. If you drive by and catch me… no laughing!
