Steve Says

You can all it cheap.

I call it frugal.

Either way the news from American Airlines has me in a tailspin!

Let's just for a minute forget about the millions in executive bonuses (and correct me if I'm wrong here, but I haven't anything about those bonuses being cut to save money).  No, instead it looks like you and I will be supplementing AA's bottom line by .. yes.. FEES!

I get it- some things are extra.  Food costs money, not a problem.  As long as I can bring my own food on the plane, I'm not complaining. (look for a later blog entry on the "reasonable" pricing of airport food- I can feel it coming)

There are even some things that I am WILLING to pay extra for.

At 6'3" I am MORE THAN WILLING to pay for an emergency exit row or bulkhead seat- the extra leg room is a luxury.  I am fully aware that this is an extra- that when I book a ticket I do so with the knowledge that I am paying for a coach seat (lack of leg room and all).  If I want extra.. I should pay extra.  I call the exit row the "poor man's first class" and I'm willing to pay extra for it.

What I am not willing to pay for is my luggage!  Much like I understand the expectation that airline seats are a certain size and that if I want more room I have to pay more money, I think it is a reasonable expectation on the airline's behalf that, unless I am traveling to a nudist colony, I will be traveling with AT LEAST one bag.

To be honest I think the folks at AA are FULLY aware of this.  Apparently all of those other "paid-for" extras haven't been generating enough money, so they have finally found the one thing that most all of us will have- luggage- and now they are charging us for it.

My disclaimer here- I am aware that FULL FARE ticket holders will not be subject to this charge, and that some international and business travelers are exempt too- but I (as a frugal minded consumer who doesn't pay the outrageous full fare) am not exempt.  In fact I think that exemption is basically lip service.  Of course those full fare people are exempt- first off there aren't too many of them, second- if they are paying that outrageous price for a ticket they deserve a little break.

I believe that carry on luggage is also exempt from this fee.  Cut to a plane full of people battling it out for the last spot in the overhead bin.  Can I still check my bag planeside when the overhead bins are full?  Or will the flight attendants now have credit card swipe machines and insist on my $15 bucks? YIKES!

Ok.. back to me.

I am leaving for a vacation on Sunday- luckily the new fees won't be in effect until mid June.  However, I ALSO think that those who have booked and paid for future tickets already (pre the AA announcement yesterday) should ALSO be exempt from this fee.  Here's why:

I'm headed to a wedding this July- I spent weeks scouring all of my favorite discount airline websites looking for the very best deal.  Am I willing to wake up extra early or arrive a little late to save some money?  YOU BET!  However now my "better deal" on American (which I will be flying to the wedding) is really no good deal at all.

Consider this: I booked my flight on American because it saved me 60 bucks (multiply by two for all of the people in my party and that's 120 bucks). Now, provided each of us bring two bags that's an extra $80 each round trip- ($15 for each of our first bags $25 for each of our second bags).  That's an added cost of $160 dollars round trip.  In short the schedule sacrifice we made in the name of saving money and flying American is now costing us 40 dollars.

Thanks a lot American.  I hope you have enjoyed my business, because I will be thinking twice before I give it to you again.  You have made it clear that your first choice is to put people out of work and pad your own pockets by passing the cost of doing your business on to me!

On the plus side, yes this may keep the airline in business and without American it would be very hard for me to fly anywhere at all.  And, yes, thank god it's summer- that means clothes that are not too bulky and don't take up too much room.  Yes, I know I can cut down my luggage load to just one bag- that would only cost me $30 roundtrip.

I ask how many round trip luggage fees and airline employee salaries could a hefty American Exec's bonus pay for?

Clearly this one has struck a nerve.

Yes, I love that as well. You all can say whatever in this forum.

I understand your frustration. I am an AMR shareholder and am not very happy about this decision either.

They need to concentrate on the customer service issues and not worry so much about these pesky ones like bags and such.

Because when there are no people flying your airline, you cannot collect any revenue.

Well put Steve.

With all the people who took pay cuts to keep the airlines out of bankrupty and then you have the execs pulling in some major bonuses....this whole thing is flat out wrong!!!

I don't fly often, but I'll never go AA again..

In their attempt to make more money all they are going to do is drive more people to other airlines. This has already happened when all the inspections were happening. And not to mention they are flying less planes now then they used to and that eliminates overhead space due to the full planes. I can speak first hand as I was on an AA flight just yesterday.

Me thinks chardoney did a blog on the subject, cause she found it annoying. LOL

It's their choice, but I think it's bad policy, mis-management, whatever. I won't fly them. There are other airlines, like Southwest who SAID they would not be charging for baggage. Of course, they don't go everywhere AA does, but hey, there must be other choices for travelers.

I challenge anyone to go to DFW airport tomorrow and go to AA's terminals.

THEY WILL BE PACKED TO THE GILLS!!

And yes Chard, we know you made a blog earlier.

It's Steve's turn now...

CHORTLE CHORTLE... :)))

You know, it's kinda funny how we pick and choose who we are pissed at in this country.

You never hear anyone griping about Wal Mart's profits. How about 7-11's? How about FOX?

Oh, and let's grill Exxon good though.

And now, AA wants to maintain a revenue stream by trying to cover costs and people gripe.

I'm done...I just dont know what makes people happy anymore...

Can't you just see it ...there are some items one is not supposed to put in a carry on but now with the charges being levied people are going to try and pack it in their carry on...what a mess....already the overhead bins are full ..I think business men are the biggest offenders..they hook all there cases together and "pretend" it is one carry on and then they have their hanging bag and the sport coat they are carrying and really give you that "look" if you someone crush their sport coat in the bin....I think..find another airline..they may end up being Southwest's best friend...they (meaning AA) have tried so hard to ignore and/or hurt SW.....maybe bad deeds come home to roost

POV, please correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Wal Marts profit % is 3%. If the execs would give up their bonus money, and still need this to stay aflot I could consider it necessary. But from what I can gather they are NOT. It would be nice if everyone would boycot AA, and send them down the tubes. The only thing is think of all the hard working people just like us that would go down with them. The execs don't care they probably have plenty of money already.

Steve, I suggest bookingbuddy.com, then hotwire (but you can check out EACH listed discount site, and its user-friendly).

I just wrote a blog on how I have purchased not only a ticket for this weekend (purchased in February or March), but I purchased one for mid July and one for mid December already, and am looking into purchasing for next March and Next summer already too (for 2009).

Everything is getting so bleeping ridiculous......I don't know how some people are going to LIVE pretty soon!

Oh, my flights are on United and Northwest (never have flown AA, never will).

I will almost BET the other airlines are going to follow suit though....in SOME greedy way!

Go to the AA.com FAQ page about the baggage fee, print it out, and take it with you when you fly in July. The fee is supposed to be for tickets PURCHASED after June 15th, not for any flight after June 15th. So if you want to avoid the fee and AA is your only airline option (which it is for most of us who want a direct flight anywhere), book your trip soon.

Hmmmm, does this mean if United and Northwest decide to charge for baggage, that since I purchased them in May (for July and December), I shouldn't have to pay either? Hell, maybe I WILL book my flights tonight for March and June 2009!

Is that charge for both ways...or is it EACH way on the flight, btw? If it's for a fund trip flight, I bet the next step is to charge for EACH way...........

OK, I a bit miffed myself! I plan on taking a trip in July. I guess I should purchase my tickets before June 15th to not be hit with all of these fees?!

Just another way to suck money out of the general public! It's not our fault AA laid off tons of people. Keep in mind, there are other airlines...

BTW, Steve...6'3"??? Va-va-voooom! Never figured you to be that tall. Niiiice...

Thank you, Dak. Too, for far too long the airline industry has been catering to the general public and fulfilling every whim. That is coming back to haunt, folks. I don't believe $15 is much to ask quite frankly. When you consider that you fly at 33,000 feet at over 500 knots, then land safely at your destination, you're still getting a good deal. Heck, a taxi to the airport is expensive! We'll see how the fee plays out.

It may seem like a heavily pre-produced comment, but I really DO love hearing from our viewers. The segments I do on FOX4 (On Your Side, Save Me Steve, and Deal or Dud) are all about helping you live better day to day. Many of my story ideas come from folks like you- my work is really YOUR work. I’m here to save you time, save you money and save you from getting ripped off. OK, now that all of that formal stuff is out of the way- here’s a little about me. Yes, I’m a Yankee- born and raised in New York, I love living in North Texas, it is so refreshing to be in a place where people are proud of the heritage years of rich history have created. Back at home in NY the tie that binds very often is the lack thereof – really, nobody is REALLY from NY anymore it seems. What’s that you say? There’s nothing to do in North Texas except shop and eat? PERFECT! Those are my two favorite things! When I’m not at work and not eating or shopping (bargain hunting is more like it) you’ll find me walking my dog Parker (that’s his picture - we got him at the Weim Rescue of North Texas), inappropriately using the punctuation “…”, or driving with the top down and pretending I know the lyrics to whatever song I’m listening to. If you drive by and catch me… no laughing!
