The Spinward Marches

by Steve_Edwards from Los Angeles

From DDain: Steven...yet another question...this one about your star status in Los Angeles...do you ever name drop your own name when going somewhere so you can get preferential treatment?

"Don't you know who I am? I'm Steve Edwards...I don't wait in line to eat!"

That's a good question DDain. The reality seems to be through the years that  on occasion I will catch a break solely because I'm on television, but mostly it works the other way:  Being recognized when I'd rather not be (which is almost all of the time) and having nobody have the slightest idea who the hell I am if  it would bring some advantage.

It goes like this:
I'm standing in line  for something and the guy in front of me does  a double take  and says, "I can't believe you're standing in line..."
The guy behind me says, "Are supposed to be somebody?"
I say, "No, not really."
The guy in front says," Go ahead  tell him who you are."
The guy in back  says, "Yeah who are you?"
I, feeling really uncomfortable mumble, "Uh, Steve Edwards."
The guy behind says,  "I never heard of you. Why should you get special treatment?"
Guy in front, "You know, he does the show with the  two crazy women, 'Good Morning LA'  on Fox."
Guy in back, "Oh yeah..........I hate that  show."

People always use the line about using celebrity to get  a better table at a restaurant. Well, I don't  want a better table. What is a better  table? How can people's egos be so fragile, that their identity  is tied up with getting the right table? How 'bout this... go to a restaurant not  to see how important you are, but just to eat and get out. Status shouldn't be an issue, not getting  food poisoning  should be.

I've seen it happen so often in this business, young actors get their first break, are on the cusp of becoming known and the first time a limo is sent for them, they call their parents in Indiana and say, "Mom, I can't believe this, they've sent a limo for me." Six months later, their show or movie is a hit and it's,  "I said  a stretch limo not a Town Car, and I asked for Panna  Water, not Evian!!!! Can't anybody get anything right here?" OK.. maybe a little bit of an exaggeration (a little), but you get the point.

And finally there's the thing that happens once in a while: A person comes over, all excited, looks me in the eye  and  says something about being a big fan and oh, I'm just so excited. I just can't remember  your  name.

I tell him it's Steve Edwards  and  he  says, "No you're not."
I insist that I am, he pauses, says, "Oh" and walks away.

My best to all of you!!!!!!

You know something Steve, you are a classy guy. Unfortunately there are a lot of Tinselturds and luckily you aren't one of them. I remember when I fixed a certain actresses Mac, not long after I helped you and this big named actress refused to sign the release agreement. Her reason was she didn't sign contracts without having them read by her attorney. Now this ditz was to sign a simple release agreement stating her computer was being given back to her. She was mean vicious and downright rude. I told her if she didn't sign, she was going without her machine. That got her more pissed off at me. Than she said she was a big celebrity, It started with the "Do you know who I am." I later found out she did nudity in films which I now know makes her a Hollyslut personified.

So I went ahead and let her rap, and rap and rap. Finally when she was done, I offered her a pen and again got the message through. No sign out, no computer. BTW, she owed nothing. Apple fixed it under warranty and because of her need for it quickly I got it flown to N.Y. overnight for repairs and had it back like new only two days later. She stormed out and made a fuss with the sales manager and he looked at me and I shrugged like Danny dumping Johnny. The warehouse guy came running to me and he said, "Ooh she was pissed at you, she is a big actress." My reply to him was "yeah and I am a publisher author and I'm pissed at her too." She didn't like it but in the end she had to follow the same rules as everyone else. If she hadn't signed the release and her computer got zeeked, I would have been legally liable.

Moral of the story was she got mean, I really didn't know who this celebrity was and I really didn't give a damned other than I tried to help her out, and got treated like crap for it, instead of a simple signature and thanks.

Bottom line, a few years later this Hollyslut was to be cast in a producer friend's film and I helped kill it by telling my friends how I was treated. They cast another actress for the lead part in their made for television flick. It's a small world baby and treating others good always begets good, unless they are Tinselturds and Hollysluts!

P.S. J. S. the actress. I hope you read this, cause you really are the type who are the problems in Hollywood.

Steve,

What can I say? I hope the people who do recognize you in public give you some personal space, and treat you respectfully. You always present yourself without a personal agenda on Good Day L.A., and if people can't see that, they're blind. I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving...I had to miss Friday's Good Day L.A., since I had to fill in early for someone at a radio station. It's always great to see Christina Ferrari on Thanksgiving, having a good time with all of you on the set.

I look forward to reading more of your blogs!

Hey Steve, if you weren't making so much money, is there anything else that could motivate you to spend your days between two of the most brainless women on the planet?

Funny....you should ask them the same question!

Mr E....I have no complaint about how people relate to me; for the
most part they don't know. care or are polite . My problem is with the sense of entitlement that so called celebrities can feel and the expectations that go along with that attitude.
I guess, part of it comes from a combination of those who have the need to famous and a culture that feeds the idea that celebtities are "special" people.

Ironically the celebs I know are actually overworked people. They are some of the hardest working folks I have ever known and that includes great production folks or behind the camera folks too.

Dorothy Lucey is okay most of the time when not talking boobs and sex mixed with church and family. I don't mind her talking of one or the other but find it extremely rude when she mixes both together. But that Jillian "HoHoHo" is just out of control completely. She does a lousy job of the weather too, but that's just my opine I suppose. Maybe she should act and dress a bit more proper for her age, rather than someone discussing their boobs, wearing whory outfits, talking up sex and acting like someone on drugs such as speed! I can tell you that people's impressions besides my own are very low of her and it actually drags the quality of the show down, with perhaps the exception of the morning pervs, panting to see the crap she is wearing the next day. She needs to grow up or take a hike and let you have a quality program.

Steve, you are the show just like you were with the previous show ABC7, it's basically all you...the king of as the internet girls call it "Kewl!"

Steve,

Thanks for the quick response back! I agree with you that there are just too many celebrities who have that feeling of entitlement. Back in the Spring of 1990, I took a class in lighting at Cal State Long Beach, and our instructor Verne Carlson told us not to be like a bunch of Prima Donnas. He elaborated by giving us examples of USC alumni who wouldn't lift a hand to help out on film sets when the crew needed help badly. He also said the same about UCLA grads who, when working in the industry, would do the same thing as the USC people. Now I'm not trying to put USC & UCLA people down; it's just that Verne had seen plenty of USC, UCLA & Cal State Long Beach alumni working in film, and that there seemed to be more of the snobs going to USC & UCLA enrolling & graduating from those 2 schools. I know the current head of UCLA's film department...John Caldwell has put a stop to that attitude. By the way, my former video teacher at CSULB was Victor Webb; I'm sure you knew him at KNXT/KCBS Channel 2...he told me some of the same things too.

Oh yes, can you let Dorothy Lucey know that I am thinking about her well being...I heard about the new fire that broke out this morning in Malibu. I really feel for everyone going through the scare again. Again, thanks for everything Steve! By the way, I hope Dorothy doesn't believe all those things written about John Stamos in the gossip papers...I happen to grow up with him, and know that anything nasty written about him is 99% made up. John is one of the good guys in Hollywood...and that woman who bugged him on the pl

Jillian is special. I saw her in person. She is much more adorable in real life than on TV and she is delicious on TV. Some people do not dig her TV act. With smart cronies she'd be influenced. She could be Pope; she reaches the masses. Seeing Steve in public would be like seeing Regis Filbin. I'd introduce Regis to my sister. I'd introduce Steve to my daughter. Well, if I had a daughter that is! Hey, maybe Steve would introduce me to his daughter! Steve raised Jillian. I assume his daughter is AOK!

Well my take on Jillian is if she acted with better morals the show would be better off. She is a forty something year old mother and a married woman. She is a family woman now and she needs to act responsibly. Wearing tops that wreak of skankism and talking about sex, boobs and other skanky issues are not becoming of someone who is opening a major morning show, especially where for the first hour or so, kids might be watching before school.

I remember when Jillian had a dating show and she turned to the crew and said "You want to see my boobs" and of course they blurred the picture, but I thought how awful a person acts like this. If she wants that lifestyle, she should go do adult films and leave the common airwaves free of that stuff in the public. We do not need another European X rated show like say from Holland.

Yeah I third that, hope Dorothy and her family are alright. I'll hold a prayer for the good folks in that community who must be in harm's way. A girl friend is staying at a Calabasas Mansion. I didn't know till this morning when I called her and she was telling me to turn on the news and I turned on FOXnews and there it was. What a heck of the way to end the year losing one's home, just horrible. I wish them all the best and hope nobody else has to lose their homes, especially during this time of year.

Hi Steve,
I was star struck when meeting you on the set of the pilot "GIFTED". Even though the show didn't go anywhere, meeting you was the highlight of my year. I like Jillian and my husband likes Dorothy , but they won't be sooo popular if you weren't on the show. Steve is recognizable if you are seen in a suit.
Steve is the best guy on t.v. and enjoy watching Good Day LA everyday.

Hey Steve, have a really Happy Holiday and can't even imagine! I would be the one in line hiding for fear of a camera somewhere, but with so many channels on TV anymore? It must be pretty funny down there,to not be recognized? Then If you were to travel miles from home you would get recognized! Hey Very nice also to respond too, another great blog and Yes, God bless all in Malibu !

Wow Steve! very nice blog indeed!! It is good to see that being known or not known can be a sensitive and crushing topic to some celebrities for such seemingly small occurences. Which in your situation seems to be the opposite in which you would better less be not recognized and enjoy your time at an restaurant, etc.... then to prefer to satisfy a cheap sense of insecurity! Keep it coming!

Hello Steve. You have been on my tv for a very long time. Before GDLA. I like your sense of humor.
sebar how long have you watched GDLA? I quit because Jill was just too trashy to listen too let alone watch. I thought she had calmed it down pretty much. I also thought she was dressing better for her age and could tell right off when I turned to their show the early part of this year that smething was different about her. Although I do think she feels it is important for all of us to know she is friends with Jesse James and Sandra Bullock way too often. Sandra Bullock is a actress we enjoy seeing sometimes. Jesse James not so much. Lost interest in him when he married that Porn Star and went way off topic of cars and bikes. So I do not watch this show as much. You were right on with Dorothy mixing sex, Church and all that she does. I think she needs something else to do. I am not sure why there is a News Show that feels it has to read the crappy tabloids to us over and over. Steve is the Rock and the Star of this show. For that I thank you anfd for all the past work.

What I'd like to know is if in fact, Steven has received any kind of preferential treatment simply because he was recognized.

I mean, you would think that someone of his stature in this town, at some point, somewhere, would have gotten a perk, right?

Steve has been the host of GoodDay LA for 13 years and counting. While it seems that he's been on LA tv for 60 years, it's really been since 1978. Steve's been the host of too many shows to mention but a few are: Am Los Angeles, Two on the Town, Live in La,: he has a closetfull of emmys, a star on Hollywood Blvd and looks forward (most mornings) to his time with Jillian and Dorothy, and yes, he reads a lot of the stuff you write!
