eHarmony sued for excluding gays

This kind of crap just pisses me off. No one has a "right" to use eHarmony. eHarmony is a PRIVATE BUSINESS, specifically engineered and developed for a target market, and they can choose who they want as a clientele and should not be forced to start providing a service, at THEIR EXPENSE, that their business model is not designed for. If there is a market for gays.. then someone would have or has already created a online site for them.  We would be seeing eGay.com commercials.

Actually there are several websites of this sort who cater to the Gay/Lesbian communities. I know that what I'm about to say is going to shock you, but here goes anyway...

I'm gay and I agree with you about this. This is ridiculous. Eharmony.com is a private business and they can have whatever clientele they choose to have. This is yet another example of how our society (every aspect of it) has become lawsuit happy. If justice prevails, this lawsuit will be dismissed.

Jay, kudos to you!! I really appreciate your view points and the fact that you don't wear a cause on your sleeve. I seriously mean that.

Plus the fact that you had the HRC logo on your avie clued me in. ;)

My mom's extremely involved in the Lambda something and also the HRC.

One question for you that I've been wondering about, Jay.

The HRC is so incredibly liberal and anti conservative, and anti Christian. Your views and convictions on these blogs do not jive with their philosophy.

What's up with that?

LOL....well, Grace, as you may have noticed I took the HRC logo down a month or so ago. I began to be increasingly frustrated with the methods HRC was using to accomplish their goal. I weighed in my head whether or not I wanted to continue to associate myself with a group that used some of the tactics they do and in the end I decided I did not.

I suppose that I'm not your typical gay man in that I do consider myself to be a conservative on all but one issue...that being gay marriage. And, understand my viewpoint on that issue is not so much a personal philosophy as it is a belief that all people, gay or straight should be treated in the same manner by the government.

Personally, I would just as soon the government stay out of marriage altogether and let it be handled properly as a spiritual (read: "church") issue and not a policy issue. If that makes ANY sense at all. I take a lot of flack from many of my friends, but I stand on what I believe.

Thank you for your comments...I appreciate them. And, I think your mom may be involved with Lambda Legal?

this relates to the lawsuit that was/is being held agaisn't abercrombie for being a "racist" store for advertising to the "white community". they choose to sell their products to a certain group of people. just because someone doesn't "fit" into that group of people doesn't mean they should be out there filing a lawsuit against them. just because i'm right doesn't give me the right to go and file a lawsuit against a clothing company such as southpole because there target group happens to be mostly african americans. same issue with eHarmony: i'm not going to go file a lawsuit with a "gay" website because they don't include services for me on their website.

And the free market works. If there is a business for it - then someone will take advantage of it. There's also dating sites for specific races, religions, and even ages. I think this suit is not as much as the gay community really wants to use eHarmony... but more on the line that eharmony doesn't approve of their lifestyle to they want to stick it to them. And we are talking California here - the lawsuit capital of the world.

A simple solution to all of this is to change our legal system to what the rest of the world uses. If you sue someone and you lose... then you are not only responsible for your legal fees... but of the person you sued. That alone would stop frivolous lawsuits in their tracks.

Way to many think the answer to everything is to sue or ban and I'm sooo fed up with that mentality! If you don't like something... go somewhere else. Simple enough.

I think this shows the difference between people who would rather push an agenda over seizing an opportunity. If eharmony wasn't offering services to gay and lesbians, then why didn't someone create such a site? Frankly, from what I understand of the 'gay culture' there's more than enough diversity within that scope of humanity to provide a very rich and varied source for companionship. I suppose next they will go after the Christian Singles sites for not permitting atheists, Muslims and Hindus. These are just folks seeking attention and possibly a nice payoff. It's not productive and simply causes more problems in the long run.

Yeah, it's the legal thing. She's an attorney. Smart lady but she's always had the "women can do it better than man" mentality and her emotional knee-jerk reactions make her a prime target for the liberal party. She, unfortunately wears her cause on her sleeve. But both she and her partner have respected our ground rules here with the little ones. I love them both alot, just disagree with their priorities.

I have been wanting to ask you about the HRC thing forever but certainly didn't want to bring it up on my own. :)) You be a smart man!

i just don't understand this at all...and i'm for gay rights completely

i remember reading something about some homosexuals being upset about there not being an option for same-sex, but i think it was decided they were starting their own extensive site (because e-harmony is pretty extensive on personality matching, more so than any other place i've seen)

i can't believe someone would sue over this...

It's still a sin, God does not change. I certainly love everyone who chooses this lifestyle, but that does not mean it's ok and that everyone should have to live with and accept what you have chosen to do. I would feel like I was not trying to help anyone if I did not try to warn them that this is against the God who loves and created them.

I think the issue is California has a law (Which really does not bother me for what it attempts to do, but fails to do correctly) that gives Gays & Lesbians equal rights, and not to be treated differently by business.

But there was a good response from the founder, that states that he has no experience with Gays & Lesbians relationships. That is why they are refusing to do it. This goes along w/ my Cigarette in Smoking Resaurants post. I think businesses should be able to cater to who they want. The issue is this though..

What if they said that the site is for Whites only? No minorities? You could still make the argument that you have no experince matching inter-racial couples.

So where do we draw the line?

I'm certainly not going to argue with any of you in here about what the Bible says, I've read the entire thing so I have a pretty good idea. Also, this blog post really had nothing to do with wether or not homosexuality was a sin.

No apologies needed. My religious views aside... this is not a gay/not gay issue.. it's about a group... any group... imposing their will on a private business. It's no different than me suing jdate (jewish dating site) for not letting me meet other Catholics. Our legal system as gone completely haywire.
