Ok, like you..I am being hammered by the high gas prices. I drive from Redondo Beach to West L.A. (our studio) and then to Van Nuys Airport AND BACK 5 days a week. I am filling up about every 3 ½ days at about $60 a tank..If you are like me and can’t carpool or mix in a few days of mass transit, we just have to deal! However, there are some ways that we can get much better gas mileage and reduce our gas expenses. I have tried these and they work!

1)     Make sure your tires are inflated to the right pressure 2)     Don’t haul unnecessary things in your trunk or truck bed (drive light!) 3)     Remove bicycle, surf racks, ski racks or any other attachments that might be causing drag on our automobile

4)     DON’T fill your tank all the way up! Experts say to keep your gas tank level at about 50% )     Fill up during the coolest part of the day to reduce evaporation of gas 6)     DRIVE the speed limit!! I know this helps. Driving about 60-65 mph really does save on mileage! 7)     When driving around town, stop with the quick accelerations and rapid breaking. By implementing these tips, I have noticed that I have gotten much better mileage and have saved a few bucks. With $4/gallon..every cent counts! Lastly, check out on our web site under the Good Day L.A. tab, “10 Lowest Gas Prices in L.A.”. We list some stations around town with the best prices. Good luck and see you at the pump!

Do the Lunada Bay locals let you surf their break?
I went there 20 years ago ( i'm 41 ) along with some friends just to look, and a local said that if we went down to the water he would spray paint our van and slash the tires! Weak! Anyway, do you know Cheeks, Dirty or Cannon? They grew up in that area and surf many of those breaks including the Redondo Breakwater.

Driving to the Culver City and the Lomita on two jobs has increased my fuel cost three fold. Over the last two months from $75.00 now upwards of $175.00 to over $200.00 per week.
But in this ecomnomy we have today, you have to drive to where the work is. I am thankful two nice jobs which will take me through September, after that who knows. By the way El Burrito Jr. rules over Tito's Taco's. Oh and whats the thing about donuts?

Hi Rick- Last week you did a shot of a crowded park n ride lot. Being up there in the air you see all the local park n rides. Do you find that generally these lots are more crowded coinciding with the high gas prices?

Rick -

What's the thought process behind not filling up the tank full? Curious. Also, is there a key to WHEN you should fill up (like, should we wait until the gas light comes on?)
Any and all help is soooo appreciated! I mean come on - how much higher is this going to get?

Hi Susan,

I think the theory of not filling up is to keep the car lighter, reducing weight and saving gas. I guess that's the same thought process as not carrying anything heavy in your trunk that you don't need.
I heard of some guy who claimed that you could get better gas mileage by inflating your tires a bit above the recommended PSI. I'm not sure if that's a good idea but it does make sense.

Have a great weekend,
Peter
