My home town…Something I am not too proud of. That’s right..Redondo Beach is the ONLY coastal city of the Santa Monica Bay that does NOT have a non-smoking ban. Malibu, Santa Monica, El Segundo, Manhattan and Hermosa ALL have non-smoking bans on their beaches. I collect more cigarette butts than any other item when I participate in beach clean-ups in Redondo.

Here is my take on this. I don’t have a problem with people smoking in open areas like the beach. The problem I have is when smokers use the beach sand as their ash tray. I’m not into taking away people’s rights…but..I’m also not into someone’s second hand smoke blowing my way.

Also, some of the butts that end up on the beach actually come through the storm drain system and NOT from smokers on the beach. If someone tosses their butt out of their car on Wilshire Blvd., it will likely end up in the storm drain and then on the beach. This is a whole other issue!! Smokers should keep their butts in their ASH TRAY not on the street!

Let me know your thoughts!

It is so true, i hate that when i am driving on the freeway or streets and the people in front of me throw their BUTTS outside of there window and hits my car. i really hate that. if they smoke than why dont they put them in there car ashtrays and then throw them out later i mean we are killing our world here. PEOPLE COME ON. I do agree with you on people smoking thats fine it their right but then when they blow their smoke right by you it just wrong i like my lungs and i want to keep them healthy. :)

If people are too irresponsible to throw out cigarette butts, then the law should be passed and enforced. Personally, I don't know how anyone can trash the beach, it's the best thing about LA! But there are plenty of stupid people in this city who don't care, and so I'd be for the passing of the law. I'm not against people's rights, but here it's apparent that they're violating everyone's right to a cleaner beach.

As a EX smoker I agree Redondo should ban it.We pollute our bay with enough junk already. Also theres nothing worse then enjoying a lay back day at the beach and having it ruined by the constant smell of cigarette smoke.

Hi Rick !

I wonder if those cigarette trashers would like it if we threw those butts in their beds? or favorite chair? Yeah, I thought so !! Enough said! oh by the way, wanted to let you know that i love watching you in the AM, you are a fresh of breath air !!!!

Hello Rick!

Not so long ago I was at a red light, while I was waiting I counted over 25 cigarette butts near the bus stop area. There must have been over 150! Not exaggerating!
Being the animal lover that I am, it's really disappointing that people don't care enough about our world. Some should stop and think of all the marine animals and bird species that suffer the consequences due to their actions. But people are too lazy to walk a few extra steps to the ash tray or garbage can. I would love (and I'm sure others would, too) to see more coverage on recycling issues to educate the public that isn't cooperating like they should. I LOVE WATCHING YOU, YOUR THE BEST/COOLEST WEATHERMAN IN LOS ANGELES!

I used to hang out at the beach in Redondo way back in the 60's. I smoked, but I always took a container with me to put my butts in. Back then it was the "pop tops" off of beer or soda cans that was a problem. I hated that people would just throw their metal tops on the sand for people to step on. I get your point about smokers and their butts and it's so easy to change. Not enough police to write citations for littering, but man if you pop a beer on the beach they are johnny on the spot. I guarantee it's the out of towners littering our beaches. I still smoke (I know, I'm an idiot) but I never throw my butt on the ground for someone else to have to pick up. I hate the dirty looks non smokers give smokers it seems they should have better things to aim their disgust towards.

Glad to see that you guys all agree! Thanks for writing in. Once again-I am fine with people smoking and don't think it should be taken away from them..But when they LITTER their butts on the streets and beaches..THAT IS NOT GOOD!

BTW-I was out surfing in Redondo on Sunday AM..and with the recent rains and run-off..the water was extra messy!..and yes..I saw some butts mixed into with the toxic pot!

I saw all the litter in the water this morning on GDLA....so disgusting. It's just a shame people don't think twice about the stuff they throw on our streets and beaches. Thanks for all you do Rick, you are such a good guy!

I used to live in Redondo and I used to swim in the water there and surf along with my brothers and my dad. I stopped as soon as a dirty diaper stuck to me. I could beleive that someone didn't put that in the trash instead eather left it on the beach or threw it on the street. I was done after that. I only go in the ocean now where it's nice and clear. I can't believe what I see now a days when I walk down there. It grosses me out

Rick

jrjs-I hear you! I see trash every time I am out there...I can't give up surfing though..I have gotten sick though a few times from the water. Heal the Bay and Surfrider are working hard to clean up the bay...Hopefully that will help..Thanks for the note-

i don't have a problem with people smoking as long as there smoking in a area where there are ash trays to put them out , on the beach should never be aloud because of the ocean and the polution of the water , no one want's to swim , surf abd come back up with a cigerette butt in there hair GROSS! or on the sand either ,i don't feel everyone should have to pay for someone else's habit , WE NEED TO KEEP OUR BEACHES CLEAN FOR US AND OUR CHILDREN AND THEIR'S AFTER , you know one time wene i was about 8 i think, my brother threw his lit cigerette on the grass and i stepped on it i was bare footed i burn't my foot and like i told him i shouldn't have to suffer because of your nasty habit THANK YOU :)

Very well stated, Rick! If Hermosa can have its Pier Ave bars and still manage to keep smokers off of the beach (drinking and smoking tend to go together) then surely Redondo can do something about it too. Keep us all posted about upcoming beach clean-ups. I am always surprised by the lack of publicity for such events.

Good take Rick. I didn't realize that Redondo hasn't passed a smoking ban yet.

Is the City Council working on anything?

I live in Hermosa, and as you know we are smoke free.
