Rich on the Road

by RichardRay from Dallas, TX

Last Post 14 hours Ago

Let me be clear about one thing.  If I had any dirt to dish on this subject I would simply say nothing at all.  But, I think, a little perspective is in order.  Fox 4 News has lost some reporters in recent months -- and some of the other Blogs in town are portraying that as some sort of ominous trend.  But -- with the clear exception of Rebecca Aguilar -- all our departing staffers have left to pursue other career options.  Unlike the other stations in town -- Fox 4 isn't laying people off.  Jason Overstreet left to take a great job with the professional bowling people, Scott Sayres landed a good PR job and Jeff Crilley started his own business, something he tells me has long wanted to do.

In fact, in the almost 25 years I have worked at KDFW-TV, we are the only local station that has not had massive layoffs at one time or another.  Channel 33 has hired and fired three complete newsrooms in the time I've been in Dallas/Fort Worth.  All of the other stations (8, 5, 11) have laid off dozens of people at a time -- and more than once.

Arguably, we've had one layoff in 25 years -- an excellent videotape editor who is now freelancing with us.  I say "arguably" one layoff because the contract of an excellent Sports anchor/reporter was not renewed about five or six years ago and it's debatable whether that was a layoff.  (He went on to get a network job at a much bigger salary - and he's doing just Mark Fein thank you).

This is a tough time in the TV news business.  Good people are losing their jobs all over the country in layoffs.  Do some of us [...] about our bosses here at Fox 4 News?  Does the sun rise in the East?  Of course, you can find people who are unhappy with some of what goes on.  I've been guilty of bitching and moaning just like everybody else.  In fact, I've never worked anywhere that there wasn't somebody unhappy with something.  Those trying to make something more of this are often found in the comment sections of various blogs -- without identifying themselves.  That's one of the things that really bugs me about this whole Blog thing -- how easy it is to leave nasty or mis-leading comments and to do so anonymously -- on Ed Bark's UncleBarky.com blog, for example.  I enjoy reading Ed but I should skip the comments section.  I promise you this.  If I comment anywhere I use my name.  Or, I say nothing at all.

Rich

Would it help if I said my parents were into weird BLEEP and named me illusions? (Joke, it was a joke!!)

I haven't seen the other sites. I am sorta racist that way.

I've studiously avoided naming favorites. I love you all.
How's that for politically correct?

Rich, i've not heard about layoffs and now that i have i'm glad yall aren't facing them. Fox 4 is the best news with the best segments. People [...] about everything...we all see how little things cause big strife on the blogs.

What does Jason Overstreet do with bowling?...is he a bowler? I miss Jeff Criley but i'm happy for him with his new career.

Jason was a competitive bowler through college I think and he has taken a job as the VP of Communications (or some such title) with the professional bowling league. They will move their hq to Arlington in a few months so he gets to move back from Milwaukee where he is for the summer. It's a good opportunity and Jason is a terrific young man.

Yes Jason seemed like a very nice motivated man. I'm glad to hear he's working in a field he loves....getting to combine two joys...bowling and communications is great for him.

without sounding too redneck...my family loves to bowl...for fun only...our scores are barely worth mentioning LOL (put the bumpers up and we're loads better)

DITTOS, Rich. Except for the real name and I'm very thankful I NEVER revealed mine here, as I've had nasty, vulgar blogs written about me (my user 'ID') on blogs other than FoxDFW & ones written here which lie, distort, & are beyond acceptable. This same blogger also got personal information and used it HIGHLY inappropriately.
I understand, completely, what you're saying though. It's the anonymity that turns some ppl into real skaggs. It gives them the freedom to do & say things, they wouldn't have the nerve to do otherwise.

I'm glad you're still at Fox... we've watched you for what seems forever! LOL

Thanks for the info, Rich. I was wondering where some of the staff went. You did forget my favorite: Todd. But good for those who are pursuing their dreams and/or ambitions!

Honestly now, there are 2 staffers at Fox that I hope leave to pursue other careers. Both are female. I'm sure they're nice people but I turn the channel everytime I see them on as their voices and delivery are akin to scratching a chalkboard.

I fully understand why people use blog names. And, you got my point exactly, that it encourages some to write things they would never write if they had to own up to who they are.
Scotty
Todd, too, left of his own volition. He, however, was not technically employed by Fox4. It's some kind of contract deal with Metro Traffic or somebody. Same with Chip Waggoner. Another really good guy I hope stays here on the air.

And, I'm sure you are right. It would be un-American not to b*tch about the bosses no matter who high up you get -- the CEO can carp about the Board of Directors. And, vice versa.

Hey Rich,
Great post. I've always gotten a kick out of the bloggers that always blast people. I think I've got these people figured out.

In ever place I've ever worked, there are those who voice their opinions (group A) and there are those who don't (group B).

Group A is bold while Group B seems to be shy. Group A leads and Group B follows. Group A is always quick with an answer and Group B goes home and night and thinks, "Dang, I should have said this or that."

On any board I've ever posted I can tell the Group A's from the Group B's. Group A presents a level arguement and can openly see what the other poster is trying to say, where as Group B ponders and ponders until they come up with something to say. Since they aren't experts at how to do it they usually make an a$$ out of themselves.

If only they would be shy like they are every where else they go.

RICH ON THE ROAD I am blessed with a truly remarkable job that for decades now has permitted me to see corners of the world, far and near. When I'm not on the road for Fox4 News in Dallas/Fort Worth, I'm often traveling with my wife Catherine -- occasionally on mission trips in Africa or Latin America with our home church (Prince of Peace Lutheran in Carrollton). My contribution to this page began largely as a Travel-blog -- sharing current and many of my past experiences in traveling America and the globe. I'm tryng, as we go along, to wade into a wider range of topics without getting in too much trouble. Richard Ray
