Is Green Dot Charter schools really ready to take over Locke High School?

The Troubled Leroy Locke High School is known for its recent Brawls, high drop out rates, and poor academic performance.  Could Green Dot be the missing key?

It’s no breaking news, according to the California Department of Education, Locke has a dropout rate of 46.2 percent and its Academic Performance Index score was 504, which means it’s at rock bottom in the state. Locke is the high school that is soon to be converted to a group of smaller charter schools by Green Dot public schools.

Locke will hand over the reigns to Green Dot this July but does Green Dot have the resources, knowledge, and experience to deal with these issues of reform. What I am talking about is the reform of safety, leadership, and unity that will be needed to get students who have become used to the violence on campus to join together to reform Locke and the surrounding communities.

This is just my opinion!!  What’s yours?

My sister went to Locke in the 70's and I remember as a 7 and 8 year old being a bit worried that she might not come home one day... that was what... 35 years ago?

Hey I have an idea... let's elect a really great mayor who can change all this!

When are black and brown people going to stand up and fix their own neighborhoods. If they stop waiting on government to correct these issues, maybe something would get done.

It can't be blamed on poverty, because I too grew up in poverty. I'm white and went to a very poor school that was majority white. The worst thing we dealt with was an occasional fight. We had no armed guards with metal detectors at the gates.

Things will never change until we stop worrying about offending people and do what needs to be done. Stop letting the kids rule...

John there plan sounds basic! to break Locke up into smaller schools, where students, parents, and teachers have a voice in what happens in education at green dot schools. it seems to be working for there other 12 schools. but keep in mind the other 12 schools have never been LAUSD schools, and has not faced the challenges that Locke has had

John: here is some more information on what green dot plans. Green Dot’s school model is focused on graduating students and preparing them for college, leadership and life. There are two main components of Green Dot’s school model, the Six Tenets of High-Performing Schools and Recommended Practices. The Six Tenets are a set of six core principles which all Green Dot schools must follow.

The Green Dot model should work in any educational context, because our principles are taken from and embodied in all high-performing schools. Consider a small private school. There are very high expectations of students, families, and staff. Everyone is held accountable for results. Decisions are made at the school, not at some far-flung district office; indeed there is no district office, of course. Funding (whether that is $25,000 private school tuition or $7,200 per student public charter school funding) is spent at the school site. Parents are highly involved. The school is open long after class hours for activities. If a school like that works for the wealthy, it can also work for the less well-to-do - and all on current public funding, even in California.

The Six Tenets of High-Performing Schools
1. Small, Safe, Personalized Schools
All Green Dot schools are small (no more than 525 students when fully developed), giving each student the best chance of success. Small schools are safe, help ensure that no students fall through the cracks, and allow students to receive the personalized attention they need to learn effectively. Classes at each school will be kept as small as fin

As far as academics are concerned I believe that Green dot may be the answer if given the chance....But will they have the opportunity????? I seriously doubt it.. In my opinion Green Dot has to many security issues. One of the functions that my company does is the certification of Charter School Safety Officers In fact two of the officers working for Green Dot were certified through my company so I have seen first hand when visiting the two schools that the Saftey Dept. is seriously under staffed and the Officers overworked. Given their safety record is good at this time In my opinion that is about to change. It will definately be a learning expereiance for green Dot. It is a shame that that learning experiance may come at the expense of our Children.
