"Sometimes you just gotta say, what the... "

If you remember the line, then you probably also remember
A) the movie it comes from
B) the scene in which it was said
C) the actors in the scene

(answers: A) Risky Business, B) Miles' speech to Joel: "[...]  gives you freedom. Freedom brings opportunity. Opportunity makes your future...  If you can't say it, you can't do it."  C) Tom Cruise and Curtis Armstrong.)

Wow. Congratulations. Pretty good memory, considering that movie is now 25 years old. Suddenly makes you feel old, doesn't it?

(Interesting Risky Business trivia: did you know Timothy Hutton was the first choice to play Joel? And that scene of Cruise dancing in his underwear was improvised. The script only called for Joel to dance to some rock music.)

That was back when Tom wasn't so weird, when dancing around in your underwear was still comical (hell, when stars actually wore underwear), and when Michael Jackson wasn't so weird, either.

Because you know what else is 25 years old?  Michael Jackson's "Thriller," arguably one of the influential achievements in pop culture of the last 25 years.

Ronald Reagan was president. Sally Ride became the first woman in space.  "Return of the Jedi" was the top grossing movie. The Police had a hit with "Every Breath You Take."  "Dallas" was the top TV show.  "Terms of Endearment" won the Oscar for Best Picture.

Now you feel old, don't you?  So how many of you are still saying...[...]?

"Today's music ain't got the same soul...
...I like that old time rock n roll."

I still remember when Carlin... no... that watermelon smashing comedian who's name escapes me (I'm only 43)

"You know you're getting old when 'Stairway to Heaven is on the Easy Listening Station."

I only watched "Risky Business" once, figured that was enough. Now excuse me I have to go take my anti-depressants...

William...excellent post as always. It's amazing how quickly things get old....to think that 25 years ago all of these thing were so popular. But lest we forget that also, 25 years ago, the greatest TV show ever, "Miami Vice" first appeared on NBC. I have my own blog about the greatness of Sonny Crockett that's worth a look. But if you just want a quick 'Vice' fix, here you all go. I think Producer Bill would have made a good Crockett.

Well okay. TV had better values, for instance you didn't have a woman on a morning show dressing and acting like a skank, or another one who talks about family and church then throws in sex every other minute. So if you look at the quality of the writing, the quality of censorship protecting the public from this type of low life performance not to mention terrible weather reports, or Steve Edwards performing in a morning show that was decent, and clean, you wouldn't have GDLA. To be honest you and Lisa can make changes to the show to fix this, and all at a time when school kids are getting ready for school, but are subjected to this kind of morning show.

Hello Producer Bill,
Its is so amazing , the other day we were watching the "Goonies" movie thinking how old it is and, how time flies, all of those kids are 30 or more now. One of the main characters on that film Sean Astin, he was also in
"Lord Of The Rings" even that one was back in 2001. Just amazing to look at how fast time flies through film. It Was Nice to get away for a bit thanks.
Yeah [...]... happened to Tom Cruise ?
