U.S. Senate passed a tobacco tax increase.  It passed 59-40 to raise the tax from 39 cents to $1.00 a pack.  The 20 billion plus in revenue over 5 years is going for a federal entitlement program that funds health insurance for poor children.  It amazes me that this vote wasn't publicized.  This is the first I've heard of it.  It was in the News Herald this morning under the Thomas voting reports.

I'm not a smoker, but enough is enough.  I didn't think it was fair to tax the smokers for the sports stadiums, either.  What is the government going to do when everyone quits?  They need to find other ways to raise money.

Amen! Enough is enough! I am not a smoker at this time either, but this continual taxing of what is still a legal substance is out of control! Maybe the pharmaceutical companies can start doing some "goodwill" stints and start funding insurance for poor children.

I didn't hear anything about that. So are you saying another dollar on pack. So a pack will be $5.00 instead of $4.00?

This is how The Foundation Syndicate will gain control of cigarette tax dollars from Issue 18 to form a monopoly of the arts & cultural groups in Cuyahoga County-

When the schills from the Community Arts Partnership go pick up their paychecks from the Foundation Syndicate bosses, they will get instructions on what to tell commissioners/city officials on how/when who to distribute Issue 18 the money to.

Hypothetically, if for example, the County Commissioners are told to distribute the tax dollars to art organizations that have at least a $440,000 year budget, a mission, a plan, a full time paid Director with a staff of 4 employees, etc.

Then next fiscal quarter in 2007, the Foundation Syndicate can start art districts with a nebulous names like Acme Cleveland Arts Consortium with a initial $440,000 year budget, with a nebulous mission, a plan, a full time paid 20 something year old Director with a staff of 4 employees, etc.......to promote arts & culture in Cleveland??/?

This bogus art districts will technically meet the county commissioners criteria for tax dollars from Issue 18. While legitimate one won't because of sanctions by the Foundation Syndicate. This is how in the 1990's the Foundation Syndicate took over and formed a monopoly of the environmental groups (Green Mafia) in Cuyahoga County:

This same Green Mafia greased the way in Columbus last Spring in a attempt to help The Wolstein Group in a hostile takeover by eminent domain of the east bank of the flats - forcing private business/property owners into a costly legal battle.
Overall, we now have a system of county government where a centralized non-elected autocratic regime can exercise a dictatorship of strict social and economic regimentation over the people through the merging of government and business organizations accompanied by forcible suppression of all criticism and opposition....Fascism

This is another example of a two-sided situation. Ban the use of the substance in public, but let's keep the substance itself legal so we can tax the heck out of it so that the government can still benefit. Why not tax alcohol in the same way? Why is it always tobacco? For that matter, make marijuana legal and start taxing that as well. I don't personally use it, but know many who do and am sure there are plenty of people out there who would kill to be able to legally get their hands on it. That would make a nice chunk for the government, I'm sure!

I am sooooo glad I roll my own smokes..
Sorry the government isn't getting crap from me. Screw the arts, screw the stasiums, screw the schools...
I pay about $1.60 a pack and I can't tell the difference from the brand I used to smoke.

The way it was written and passed is the tax will go from .39 to a $1.00. That means it will go up .61. It passed the US senate last week and I'm not sure when it will take effect.

Pixie, where were you able to find this info? I would like to pass it on to some friends but I can't find it anywhere.

I read it in the News Herald. It was on page 2 under the "Thomas voting reports" that shows how all the Ohio senators & House of reps voted for the previous week. You might try looking on the News Hearld website at: www.news-herald.com.

I checked the News Herald website and couldn't find anything under "Thomas voting reports". So, maybe it will be on the websites for Sen. Brown and Voinovich. The report said Voinovich voted against it and Brown voted for it.
