I love children, but do not really care for animals in my house.
My daughter was allergic, so the issue was not even a consideration.
As a teen, I loved horses and riding.
I respect that people love their animals.
I have nothing for contempt for those who get an animal because of the image it projects, then neglects or abuses that animal.
In retrospect, I thought that the story had a bit of humor.
Sorry that you didn't enjoy it.

Hell..Until you mentioned that it was an animal I figured she was talking about her husband of two years..LMAO..

Seriously though..I have had pets ALL of my life..EACH one was special and I Loved them ALL and they ARE a PART of the Family..
SOMETIMES I EVEN wonder WHO it is that belongs to WHOM..I have one NOW and he's a PURE Joy..

However..I would NEVER confuse my Dog,, Cat,, Horse,, Parrot,, Fish,, Wildebeast or ANY other animal with a child..Not MY child and cartainly not your's either..

I've ACTUALLY heard people say that ,,given the choice between saving a puppy or a baby THEY'D save the puppy..Far as I'm concerned,,THAT'S sick...

I don't understand. Do you mean you cannot paint portraits of animals from photos?
Or you can, but won't?

OK. The dictionary defines portrait as "a picture of a person." so never mind.

I thought it was a picture of anything, but I am no artist. LOL!

Ah yes Frank but you can do portraits of pets, or at least I do. =) I don't understand not doing a pet portrait, some people never have children or can't have children and their pets become their children.

To be quite honest I prefer working with pets rather then people any day of the week, and after dealing with unruly brats during the work week, I would much rather deal with a pet then someone's unruly brat.

Well, that is what I thought also Brenda. A true artist should be able to paint any living thing, and especially from photos.

But portrait specifically means a person. If an artist is specializing in one given area, like persons, and that is all they want to do, why not.

It is worth a fortune. It was not a portrait.

What it boils down to here, is should Peg have painted the animal picture on porcelain?

If she has the talent to do so, I would say yes.

And just think how much the grieving "mother" would have been willing to pay..........

It's a little twisted but at the same time people become attached. My mom put her dog of 12 years to sleep this week and I seriously can only remember a few times hearing her so distraught. Pet's have a huge impact on people and I think the main thing here is that you don't connect with animals the way some people do.

I know a lot of people who have said that their pets are like children to them, though I don't really understand how they can relate. I do know that loss of any kind hurts regardless of who or what it is when you love them.

You did the right thing, no one is obligated to be sympathetic and if you really don't feel the same way then so be it. It's a free country. At least you were compassionate enough to listen to them.

I get that you didn't want to paint a picture of the dog but I don't get why you were irritated or the humor in this story. What reason would she have for "intentionally misleading you"? Clearly she loved this pet enough to contemplate spending a small fortune on your services or thought you good enough to honor her "son".

The premise of this is that you are judging what is important and how another should feel about something. Is it your job to judge what and how others love ? I do not try to tell others what to love , and I can see a dark inverse to this because it also tells me that you will judge another for not loving a human enough to satisfy your “standards” ....this tells me more about how you build your self esteem than it does about actual standards, you find yourself a better person because you find fault in this person.
