What kind of communion bread to you use?
We were in a planning meeting for Dan Gray's "In Good Faith" piece about people who 'police' communion in the Catholic church. There is some debate whether or not a person should be able to tell you if you can take communion or if it should be solely your choice.

Dan Gray's story on Communion Police airs Sunday night at 9 p.m. on FOX 2.

But check this out: many churches and congregations use different kinds of communion bread and wafers. What kind does your church use? Does it matter?

A pastor Taste-test communion wafers: Here's an interesting wafer 'taste test' we found on Godtube.com. Some people think it's funny, some people think it's sacrilegious.

What do you think? I wonder what the communion police will think of this guy?

And, have you ever really though about how the wafer taste?

No, I just take my communion. However, I do Have a story to share with ya...
A friend of mine whose hubby cheated on her and abused her k? Well, she finally divorced him and because HE will NOT sign the paper and therefore the annulment or whatever its called... SHe can NOT take communion. I think its bull crap!!!!!
It should be your choice. I find it odd that the church and all of its ammenities is NOT open to everyone as it is supposed to be... I think personally, they can be very judmental. JMO

It should be at your own discretion, however the bible warns us-

1 Cor. 11:27-30
"Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord.
But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup.
For he that that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord's body.
For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep."

People need to examine themselves before they take the Lord's Supper.

lilmomma28,
Your friend, even though she is divorced, is not restricted from communion as long as she has not remarried or in some other state of serious or 'mortal ' sin. Divorce is not a problem with the RC Church, it's the remarriage. Her ex's lack of co-operation can slow things up but won't stop her from getting an annulment if she can show that at the time of her marriage the sacrament was invalid. If her priest can't or doesn't know how to help her she needs to get an advocate, ask at the parish or contact the archdiocese.
ON TOPIC- communion bread in the RC Church is wheat flour and water. Though in the Eastern Churches it may be slightly different, I'm not sure. Both would be unleavened, as described in the Passover feast in Exodus. In the Church it replaces the lamb which was to be eaten at Passover, and is the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of our Lord, the Lamb of God, who is with us even to the end of time.

Wow, I have been blogging on this exact subject over on Speedy's blog under "News"....go there and join us!

Ms._Vera, we have big crackers that we each break a little piece from when it is passed. Then the grape juice comes by in little individual cups. My kids love the communion bread and will try to get an extra piece just because it tastes good!! When they do that, it's an automatic dirty look from me!!

I, myself, prefer the garlic with a bit of Italian seasoning, lol. (I know, that is going to get me growled at). The thing is, it is silly. If the church selects a brand and you take it, you don't care which brand as you hope the Church board made an appropriate choice for your congregation.

M4W, I always loved that little grape juice. Ours was served in a special tray filled with little glasses and since my Grandpa (just recognized as the longest term Deacon at the Church's 150th anniversary celebration) passed the communion and since I sat on the end of the pew, I loved when he would pass the wafer basket and the juice to me to pass on to others.

LCF...my kids love it all too. Once I caught Luke downstairs after church helping himself to the juice and crackers. We use the special tray filled with little glasses too.

Garlic and Italian seasoning....! You are funny, girl!!

Yep, we were allowed to do that as kiddos. Loved that grape juice (still do), lol.

lilmomma, a friend's family provided a special donation to the church and suddenly their son was allowed to marry the divorcee in the church with approval. He joked about it. But her hubby refused to sign paperwork and his family insisted he be married in their parrish.

I always felt that I was in exercise class when attending friend's weddings in a catholic church, lol.

Wow LCF...the same exact thing happened to my cousin and it was around $1000!! But after that happened, they were suddenly "right in the sight of God"....incredible!

That is too funny M4W. I found it so strange that the donation made all the difference in the eyes of the Church.

Mom and I were talking about the 150th anniversary of the church I grew up in. She asked me something about "our" going to this church (meaning when her and dad took us). I told her that I only remembered being in that church once with them and that was at my grandmother's funeral. She was surprised. I remember as early as kindergarten going with my grandparents. I remember my grandfather being at my baptism, but not my parents. How could I possibly not remember them taking me to church?

We use wafers made of whole wheat. On Holy Thursday (AKA, "Maudy Thursday") we make home-made unleavened bread to commemorate the Last Supper of Jesus Christ. My church purchases the bread from some monastery.

As far as the "Communion Polce," I have some severe reservations about withholding Holy Communion from a person who approaches me. Certain Catholic bishops have made Communion (or lack thereof) a punishment for those who don't follow the Catholic faith in certain matters. Some Moral Theologians see this as taking the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ hostage. Some see it as a sign of Unity with the Church in Rome and if you are not in lock-step with the Church's teachings, you cannot receive. I see Communion as the REAL TRUE PRESENCE of Jesus Christ, Body, Soul and Divinity. It is an awesome event in my life!

It all tastes like cardboard to me, but personally I no longer partake in the sacrement. I feel the Catholic Church has made a mockery of the Bilble. Making it to fit their agenda. I can not associate myself to a false religion so I perfer to pray on my own. Ok now all the Catholics can shoot me know, but it is my opinion.

SO... you are saying then, that a person should be able to walk into a members only church, and take communion, because they feel like it??? Well hell, i feel like reporting the news, i guess fox2 HAS to let me, since i want to and all. I am not talking about churches who have communion open to the community, i am talking about churches like St.Ann, Mo.'s Hope Lutheran for example. You have to be a member of their church to receive communion there, and that is their perogative. Where do you people get off by trying to tell a church it's business? They are not run by public nor govt. money, so YOU HAVE NO SAY IN WHAT THEY DO, JUST AS THE CHURCH HAS NO OFFICICAL SAY IN YOUR BUSINESS!!! unless you WANT church n state to become unseperate. This is common sense, people. I dont get to go to a free-mason's meeting, and demand they allow me to take part in their rituals, and no one would help me make them either. Get over it. I am so tired of people who complain about the church's intolerance. DONT GO THERE IF YOU DONT AGREE WITH THEM!

When did My Fox news become a place to broadcast Archbishop Burke's (and the Catholic Church for that matter) personal dogma and agenda? Especially when its so far from anything remotely Christian?

I am no Bible scholar but I do remember reading about Jesus serving the sick, poor and YES EVEN sinners of his day. He reached out a hand filled with LOVE, MERCY and TRUTH. Jesus preached about acceptance and forgiveness - he didn't close his doors to anyone who truly wanted him in their hearts and lives.

So how does my Eucharistic minister have the right to judge me moments before I commune with Jesus? That is some responsibility placed on those ministers.

And for those who say, "Don't go there if you don't agree with them," well I say, "Don't put it on my NEWS CHANNEL!"

I don't see Fox Channel 2 broadcasting any other church politics or dogma - just Burke's. It is obvious Dan Gray is Catholic and KTVI seems in bed with Burke's archaic religious philosophy.

Lastly, for those reading this: If you are baptized Roman Catholic never let anyone take away your call to receive Jesus into your life - period.

And for those of you that do hold the body of Christ hostage, you will have to answer someone far more powerful than Burke, eventually!

Peace.

THe best Communion bread was in grade school in Cleveland OH at a Bystatine(sp?) Catholic church/school homemade yeast bread made by the "church ladies"--big hunks!. My Grandma made it for me at home--unblessed of course.

When my daughter was practicing for her First Communion last year, I took slices of bread and rolled them flat with a rolling pin. Then I cut them into small circles using a small plastic lid. After that, I toasted the "hosts" in the oven for just a couple minutes. She had a BLAST having "mass" at home and she even gave "communion" to the dog!

The late Archbishop Fulton Sheen wrote: "There are not over 100 people in the US who hate the Roman Catholic Church: there are millions, however, who hate what they wrongly believe to be the Catholic Church."
Until the year 1050 there was only 1 church, the Catholic Church. It 1050 it split to the East and West. After the Reformation in 1561-1900 there became over 2000 new churches and from 1900-1990 there were 26,000 new churches with thousands of new denominations added each year.
The Catholic Church, although it has changed the way it practices, has NEVER changed its teaching in over 2000 years. Its teaching comes from the apostles and their traditions. It is Bible based.
Our faith is misunderstood by many largely because of "Cafeteria Catholics" who pick and choose what the wish to believe regardless of what the church teaches yet still call themselves Catholic.
Archbishop Burke is doing his job as the Shepard of the Diocese by instructing the flock in the truths that have held firm since the time of Christ. We all know that doing the right thing is not always easy or popular.
Learn what your faith teaches and WHY. When you have the correct information from a true source you can decide if you really belong in that faith and want to follow its ways.
